SOUTH SURREY, British Columbia (Canada) - The Dutch Softball Team has finished in third place of the Canada Cup Tournament after losing the second semi-final game vs. Canada 8-1 on Sunday-afternoon. With the win, Canada advanced to the Final where it will meet Australia.
The Dutch team has played its best Canada Cup-tournament ever. After dominating in the preliminary round, the squad of American Manager Liz Kelly kept on surprising everyone, as it won its first two games in the Play-Offs. But then, secured of at least a third place, the team simply must have been tired of an exciting week in which it won seven of nine games played. The squad could produce only one more run in its next two games and lost to Australia and Canada. But that's surely no shame, as those two teams are the finalists of the 2006 edition of the Canada Cup. The Dutch team has played extremely well and received a lot of compliments for what it has showed these days. They showed they can compete with everyone, including higher ranked national teams. For the Dutch national team, this has been a great preparation for the upcoming World Championships, which will be held in August in Beijing (China).
Dutch centerfielder Saskia Kosterink was named to the All-Tournament All Stars Team.
In the Final, Australia, which played in it for the fifth year in a row, successfully defended its title. With a 6-4 win vs. Canada, they won their third consecutive title.

The Dutch team took a 1-0 lead in the first inning, but then Canada took control of the game with a 4-run rally in home of the first. With one out, the Dutch team got the bases loaded in the opening at bat. Marjan Smit then walked, followed by a single from Daisy de Peinder and another walk for Sandra Gouverneur. Smit then scored on a grounder by Marloes Fellinger, but Debbie Connor then flied out, leaving two runners in scoring position.
In the remainder of the game, the Dutch got three more runners in scoring position, but all stranded at second base. In the third, Marjan Smit singled with one out, in the fourth Marloes Fellinger led off with a single and in the fifth Marieke Jansen did the same. But in the third, a grounder and a flyout followed, in the fourth there was a strikeout and and error, then a double play after a pitching change. In the fifth, two strikeouts and a flyout ended the inning.

Trailing 1-0, Canada scored four runs in the first inning with two outs. Dutch starter Judith van Kampen then gave up a single and walked a batter. Cindy Eadie and Angela Lichty then followed with RBI-singles, then Jennifer Salling added a 2-run double.
Rebecca Soumeru took over the pitching in the second, gave up three singles in the second and third inning, but the three runners all stranded. In the fourth, Rachel Schill singled with one out, then scored on a basesloaded walk for Alison Bradley, but a flyout ended the inning and left three runners behind.

Canada reached a 7-run difference in the fifth inning by scoring three more runs. With one out, Soumeru walked a batter, then gave up a double to Erin Cumpstone. With two outs, she loaded the bases with a walk and was relieved by Kristi DeVries. But then, a wild pitch resulted in a run and another walk re-loaded the bases. Sheena Lawrick followed with a 2-run single (she was 3-for-4) to increase the lead to 8-1 and end the game.
