HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Vice-champion Konica Minolta Pioniers opened its exhibition season on Saturday-afternoon with a 7-0 shutout vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW, which this season has a young team. As maintenance and construction work is currently underway on the main field, the game was played on Field # 2 of the Sportpark Toolenburg-complex. On the main field, the outfield fences are being brought in to reach a 100-120-100 meter distance, while a new warning track will be added. In recent years, the Pioniers-field has seen only a handful of homeruns, meaning a homerun will become a frequent part of the game again starting this season. For Pioniers, this was its first game under new Manager (and former HCAW-player/coach) Frank Koene.

The home team opened the score with two runs in the first inning off rookie starter Mark Kolner, who last season threw 3.1 inning on the big league-level. With one out, Edwin de Graaf (fielder's choice) advanced to second base on a wild pitch, before Glenn Romney walked. De Graaf then was able to move to third base when next batter Dè Flanegin flied out and scored when an error was made on a grounder by Glennsig Polonius. Moments later, Romney scored the second run on a single by Norbert Lokhorst. After Mark-Jan Moorman also singled, Pioniers stranded three runners as Marcel Venema grounded out to end the inning.

Pioniers added a run in the second inning when Jefferson Muzo scored on a passed ball, then scored another run in the third inning off new pitcher Rutger Zwaal, who last season threw for First Divisionist Alcmaria Victrix. Zwaal gave up a single to lead-off hitter Dè Flanegin, who later scored on a grounder by Mark-Jan Moorman.

In the fifth inning, Pioniers increased its lead to 5-0 when Glennsig Polonius homered. Two innings later, Michael Duursma did the same to lead off the seventh inning off Joep de Wit, who made his big league-debut in the second half of last season and went on to throw 14.2 innings in ten appearances. Edwin de Graaf then walked and would score the seventh run on a single by Glennsig Polonius, who had three hits, two RBI's and reached base in all of his four at bats.

HCAW, which lost most of its leading players after a disappointing last season, reached base twice in the second inning when Pionier-starter Roger Kops walked rookies Stefan Hoogewerff and Sebastiaan Olgers with one out, but then recovered and struckout Bart Gabriëls and Juriën Overman.
In the third inning, the Bussum-team, which this season is coached by former players Roy Berrevoets and Jurjan Koenen, reached base again twice off Dave Draijer. This time, with two outs, Siemen Korff (who missed the entire season last year because of an injury) and (former Pionier) Sergio Koelemij singled, but now Sidney Ensermo struckout. Ensermo, who played for Almere '90 last year, is one of the few players in the team with big league-experience. The two basehits were the only ones hit in this game by HCAW. The next inning, the same happened. Hoogewerff led off by reaching base when an error was made on his grounder, but then Draijer struckout Olgers, but walked Gabriëls. Again, with two runners on base, Overman struckout and then the inning ended when experienced player Ronald Jaarsma popped out. Jaarsma, who has been the team's lead-off hitter in recent years, today was batting in the number nine spot of the batting order. Today's lead-off hitter was newcomer Shurty Tremus, who last year played for ADO. With the strikeout for Overman, three Pionier-pitchers would eliminate 13 of the last 14 batters in the remainder of the game. Only Sidney Ensermo was able to reach base in the last three innings when he led off with a walk in the sixth inning, but then was eliminated when next batter Stefan Hoogewerff grounded into a double play. Kolner, De Wit and Olgers last season played for HCAW's second team in the First Division, while Hoogewerff played for Amsterdam Pirates 2.

ALKMAAR (Neth.) - Amsterdam Pirates, which last weekend was the lone team to play an exhibition game, today added its second victory, as it shutout First Divisionist Alcmaria Victrix 11-0 on eleven basehits.

Pirates took charge of the game in the first inning when it scored four unearned runs off starter Rick Pluijmers. After lead-off hitter Remco Draijer struckout, next batters Zaïr Koeiman and Sidney de Jong reached base when an error was made on their grounders. The two then scored when next batter Bas de Jong singled. After Fausto Álvarez Rizo also struckout, Pluijmers gave up a single to Roderick Simon, followed by a 2-run double to Mark Kan.

After two scoreless innings, Pirates had another 4-run rally (with two outs) in the fifth inning off veteran Mark Giroldi, who had taken over for Pluijmers in the third inning. With one out, Giroldi hit Mark Kan with a pitch, but next batter Roy Harteveld popped out. The rally then started when Björn Henrichs singled, followed by an RBI-double by Remco Draijer. Next, Henrichs would score on an error. The bases were loaded when Giroldi walked Zaïr Koeiman and Sidney de Jong, before a throwing error on a grounder by Bas de Jong led to two more runs and a 10-0 run score. Hereafter, Giroldi was relieved by Dave Tromp, Jr., who ended the at bat by striking out Álvarez.
The eleventh run was scored in the seventh inning off new pitcher Michel Tromp. With two outs and Sidney de Jong (fielder's choice) on first base, the bases were loaded again when Bas de Jong and Fausto Álvarez singled. A basesloaded walk for Roderick Simon led to the final run in the game. Sidney de Jong reached base in all of his five at bats and scored three runs, while Bas de Jong had three basehits and four RBI's.

Pirate-starter Jos de Jong threw three innings in which he only gave up one single, which was hit by Mark Giroldi in the second inning. Hereafter, De Jong walked Joost van Heems, but then ended the inning with strikeouts for Nick Tieman and Thomas de Groot.
In the fourth inning, Martin de Boer led off with a single off new pitcher Raban Schalm, but then Giroldi grounded into a double play.
In the fifth at bat, Alcmaria was the closest to a run. With one out, Thomas de Groot, Tom de Groot and Michael Kramer all singled. Next, the lead runner was forced out at home on a grounder to first by Rik Neetens and the bases were left loaded when Sergio Paulina ended the inning with a pop-fly.
Djurvin Cleofa and Nick Stuifbergen then each threw one inning for Pirates. Cleofa saw one batter reach base with one out, but was then supported with a double play, Stuifbergen retired three batters in a row in the seventh.

DELFT (Neth.) - The exhibition opener for MediaMonks RCH against First Divisionist Blue Birds was canceled on Friday-evening. While the weather conditions were fine, the reason for the cancelation was that the field in Delft was declared unplayable after the rain of the last few days.

The two teams now will meet on Sunday. Originally, that game was to be played on the home field of RCH in Heemstede, but that site also was declared unplayable. Instead, the game now will be played on Sportpark De Elta, the home field of Terrasvogels in closeby Santpoort.

Sparta/Feyenoord opens with win

DORDRECHT (Neth.) - Sparta/Feyenoord, which saw its first two exhibition games being canceled last weekend, today opened with a 7-1 victory against First Divisionist Storks. Instead of playing on the site of Storks in The Hague, the game was played in Dordrecht on the site of The Hawks. Initially, both teams also were to meet on Sunday, but that game was scrubbed, as Sparta/Feyenoord's home field in Rotterdam currently is being worked on. Today's game was the first for Sparta/Feyenoord under new Head Coach Adonis Kemp.

Sparta/Feyenoord opened the score in the first inning when lead-off batter Ramphis Trinidad reached base on an error and moved to third base on a single by rookie and newcomer Edison Bito, who last year played in two games in the big league for DOOR Neptunus. Next, Bito stole second and while the throw went to second base, Trinidad broke for home and scored when the throw back ended in the backstop. Hereafter, Storks-starter Lukas Reinders retired the next three batters, Dwayne Kemp on a comeback-grounder, Rien Vernooy and Nick Eppinga with a strikeout.
Two runs were scored in the next at bat. With one out, Sape Wagenaar walked and advanced on a wild pitch, then Earmy Isabella also walked with two outs. Wagenaar, who had moved to third on a groundout, then scored on the second wild pitch in the inning by Reinders. Isabella came into scoring position on a single by Ramphis Trinidad, then a third wild pitch moved the two runners. A single by Edison Bito then made it 3-0.

After two scoreless innings, Sparta/Feyenoord scored a run in each of the next four innings. In the fifth, Edison Bito (who was 3-for-4) led off with a triple and scored on a single by Dwayne Kemp. In the sixth, Patrick Wabijn, who started the game at first base playing for Storks, but entered the game in the fifth as the catcher for Sparta/Feyenoord, singled with one out, then scored on a 2-out double by Earmy Isabella. In the seventh at bat, Dwayne Kemp reached on an error and scored on a double by Rien Vernooy, who last season played in his first four big league-games for DOOR Neptunus, with whom Sparta/Feyenoord has a working agreement. In the eighth, Isabella led off with a single and scored the seventh run on a sac-fly by Kemp.
Besides Wabijn, Sape Wagenaar, Edison Bito, Shurendell Borgschot and Calvin Martinus also played part of the game for Storks. Did Bito and Vernooy last season made their big league-debut with Neptunus, Martinus did the same and appeared in seven games. Wagenaar last year was one of the catchers of Neptunus, but his season was shortened to only ten games, as he was sidelined with a meniscus-injury. Borgschot last season played for The Hawks, as did starting pitcher Ronald de Bont, who threw the first two innings and gave up only one basehit.

Herman Gaarman, another former player of the Neptunus-organization, took over in the third inning and struckout four of the seven batters he faced. The lefthander gave up an infield-hit in the third inning and walked a batter in the fourth in which he was relieved (with two outs) by Rudy Seebus, who initially was announced as today's starting pitcher. Seebus retired the first six batters he faced, before giving up a double to teammate Sape Wagenaar, who had just entered the game as a guest-player for Storks. Moments later, he scored when a single followed, after which Seebus was relieved by Erwin Bonis. He saw Storks load the bases on an error and an infield-hit, but ended the inning with a groundout.
Former Neptunian Daan Baecke (who last year already pitched in 10 games for Sparta/Feyenoord) threw the last two innings. While he didn't gave up a basehit, Baecke walked two batters and hit two others, but also turned a double play.
Bob van den Heuvel, another former Neptunus-pitcher, threw the third, fouth and fifth inning for Storks. He was relieved in the sixth by former big league-pitcher Bas Wiedeman (Pioniers/ADO), who threw two innings, before Job van Rest pitched the final at bat for Storks.
