HAVANA (Cuba) - On Wednesday, DOOR Neptunus played its second game of its weeklong trip to Havana. It again met Ciudad Habana, which this time won 3-0, as Neptunus again produced only two basehits.
But despite that, the game was a highlight, as Neptunus got the chance of calling the famous Estadio Latinoamericano their home for one day, as the Rotterdam-squad was the home team in this match-up.
The game started at 9:30 in the morning, as the stadium had to be prepared for a game in the evening. Therefore, it also was halted after playing only two hours, resulting in the game lasting only six innings.
Neptunus will finish its trip tomorrow and returns home on Friday, March 14, but it has been a success, as the complete team traveled to Cuba. There, under good weather conditions and using fine accomodations, the team had a week to prepare for the upcoming season.
The trip to Cuba was made possible, due to the 25th anniversary of the sister-link between the cities of Havana and Rotterdam.
After leaving two runners in the first inning, the Cubans opened the score in the third inning.
Marlon Hérnandez led of with a triple off starter Jurjen van Zijl, then scored when next batter Yasmani López grounded out.
A Cuban run was prevented in the fifth inning.
New pitcher Berry van Driel (who last season pitched for ADO), walked lead-off batter Rasmel Chavez, who advanced on a sac-bunt.
After a fly-out, Chavez tried to score on a single by Irakli Chirino, but was thrown out at the plate on a nice throw by leftfielder Andy Leer.
Havana then did score in the sixth and final inning.
With one out, pinch-hitter Ramon Peña doubled and scored when José Cuesta (who yesterday homered) tripled as a pinch-hitter.
Cuesta then scored himself when next batter Michel Pereira grounded out.
Neptunus got a chance of scoring first in its first inning.
With one out, Benjamin Dille and Raily Legito walked, but then a flyout and a groundout followed.
In the third inning, Mike Bazuin, who doubled in yesterday's game, led off with a single, but would strand on second base.
In the fifth, Neptunus left another runner when Mourik Huyser was hit by a pitch, but didn't got further than first base.
In the sixth, Raily Legito led off with Neptunus' second basehit of the game, but was left behind on second base.
