HAARLEM (Neth.) - Dutch champion Corendon Kinheim started the new season well on Saturday, beating Mr. Cocker HCAW, 13-3. In the middle of the second inning, Kinheim led only 4-2, but then rallied for three runs and went on to score in all innings, except the fifth.
HCAW took an 1-0 lead in the first at bat off David Bergman, who was named the Best Pitcher of last season. The run, however, was unearned, as an error led to it. With two outs, Sidney Ensermo singled and advanced on a wild pitch, then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Randy Daal. Kinheim reacted with four runs in its first off Adam Sowell. The American starter walked Danny Rombley and René Cremer, got a force play-grounder out of Dirk van 't Klooster, but then gave up a single to Vince Rooi, which tied the score and made up his error that gave HCAW the lead moments earlier. Van 't Klooster and Rooi were then awarded the next base when Sowell balked and scored when Bryan Engelhardt followed with a 2-run double. Moments later, Engelhardt scored when an error was made on a grounder by Tjerk Smeets.
HCAW got one run back in the second inning when it again scored an unearned run with two outs. Juriën Overman reached on an error, stole second and scored on a single by Jermaine Esprit. In the home of the second, Kinheim added three more runs to take command over the game. Denny Beljaards led off with an infield-hit, then the bases were loaded when, with one out, René Cremer and Dirk van 't Klooster also singled. Vince Rooi followed with a 2-run single and Van 't Klooster later scored on an error.
In the third inning, Denny Beljaards tripled with one out and scored on a sac-fly by Danny Rombley and in the fourth, two more runs were added. With one out, Vince Rooi (who was 3-for-4) doubled, which led to a pitching change. Joep de Wit took over and started by striking out Bryan Engelhardt, but then gave up a 2-run homerun to Tjerk Smeets, which increased the lead to 10-2.
After a scoreless at bat, Kinheim scored three runs in the sixth when pitcher Joep de Wit gave up four extra basehits. René Cremer and Dirk van 't Klooster switched places after back-to-back lead-off doubles, then Jason Halman added an one-out RBI-double and scored himself when next batter Tjerk Smeets tripled.
HCAW didn't got much scoring opportunities after the first two at bats. They stranded a runner on second base in the fourth inning, but scored one run in the seventh off Patrick Beljaards, who had taken over the pitching the inning before. Sidney Ensermo led off with a single and advanced on a double by Randy Daal. Ronald Jaarsma then lined out and Ricky Daal flied out, before Ensermo could score on an infield-hit by Adrian Anthony. But that was all for HCAW, as Shurty Tremus flied out to end the game, as the 10-run difference was reached.
