ALKMAAR (Neth.) - Alcmaria Victrix on Sunday also won its second game of the season in the First Division, beating Blue Birds, 8-5. The victory was the 100th for Alcmaria since playing in the First Division in the 2002 season.
Alcmaria started its home season without one its most loyal fans, as Mrs. Riet Tromp, the mother-in-law of Head Coach Lisandro Tromp, passed away on Saturday, one day after 70th birthday. She will surely be missed by the Alcmaria-family.

As they did yesterday, Alcmaria struck early and already held a 6-0 lead after three innings. In the second at bat, the first run was registered off starter Dennis Timp. Martin de Boer led off with single and was awarded second base on a balk, then moved on a single by Just van Heems and scored in a double-steal situation. Later in the inning, Van Heems was thrown out at home on a grounder to short by Thomas de Groot.

The home team then rallied for five runs in the third at bat. Michael Pluijmers and Onno Jansen led off with singles to put runners on first and third base. Dennis Blom followed with a bunt-single to load the bases, as Pluijmers was unable to score and remained on third base. All runners then scored when Ludrick Pieter's single was followed by an error in leftfield. Pieter ended up on second base, moved on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Martin de Boer. This marked the end for Dennis Timp, who was relieved by David Gerkema, another pitcher with big league-experience. Timp has thrown for ADO, Gerkema pitched for Sparta/Feyenoord with his twin-brother Lesley. But the hitting and scoring continued. After De Boer had stolen second base, he scored when Just van Heems and Nick Tieman greeted Gerkema with singles. Van Heems and Tieman moved on a wild pitch, but would strand on second and third base, as two out followed.

Blue Birds narrowed the deficit to 6-2 in the fourth inning. With two outs, Alcmaria-starter Joran Klarenbeek gave up a single to Marco Metz, then could have been out of the inning on the next play, but then a throwing error was made on a grounder by Remco Seitzinger which put runners on second and third base. Singles by Bas v.d. Leeuw (infield-hit) and Sybren Hahn then accounted for two unearned runs. Alcmaria got one run back in the home of the fourth. With one out, Dennis Blom (fielder's choice) moved on a walk, then scored on a force play-grounder by Martin de Boer.

In the sixth inning, both teams scored once. Jason Benito led off the Blue Bird-sixth with an infield-hit, reached third base on a throwing error on a force play-grounder and scored on another grounder. In the home sixth, Ludrick Pieter walked with two outs and Tjibbe van Dijk (who pitched in the big league for ADO) came in to relief David Gerkema. Van Dijk hit next batter Martin de Boer with a pitch, then gave up an RBI-single to Just van Heems, which increased the lead to 8-3.

Alcmaria-starter Joran Klarenbeek was relieved after six innings by René van Veen, who gave up two additional runs to Blue Birds in the seventh inning. Van Veen walked lead-off hitter Otto Krüse and hit next batter Edwin Nieuwstraten with a pitch, then two outs were registered. But then an RBI-single by Marco Metz and an error in a double-steal situation followed, resulting in two runs. But hereafter, Blue Birds would reach base only once in the remainder of the game. That happened in the ninth inning off closer Mark Giroldi. With one out, Giroldi walked a batter, but then ended the game to earn a save.
By the way, Giroldi was the lone player in this game who has played for the Dutch National Team in the past, as he was a member of the national squad that participated in the Chung Hua Tournament in Taiwan in 1987. Until 1991, Giroldi pitched five seasons for Haarlem Nicols with his brother Ron Giroldi, who is widely considered as the first real closer in the Dutch big league. (April 15)
