SANTPOORT (Neth.) - A4 Terrasvogels closed the Opening Weekend on Monday with two victories vs. Centrals, which had surprised by winning its two openers on Saturday.
Playing at home, Terrasvogels needed an extra inning to win the opener 1-0, but then had no problems in Game Two to win 12-3.

Centrals showed itself a tough opponent in the opening game and was close to victory a few times. The team got a chance to break open the game right away in the first inning when it got runners on first and second with no outs. Marieke Brouwer led off the game with a double to deep leftfield, then next batter Marjorie Henriquez reached base safely on an error. But then pitcher Judith van Kampen settled things by striking out two of the next three batters to end the thread. After the error in the first inning, she retired ten batters in a row, before Centrals threatened again in the fourth inning. First, Bianca Hardeveld lined out to leftfield, then Maud Braakman walked and Fabiënne Stuart reached on an error. But this time, a force play-grounder and a comeback-grounder ended the inning.
Terrasvogels got its first scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. Femke Haage led off with a single and moved on an one-out infield-hit by Olga Kleinlooh. The two advanced on a sac-bunt by Nicole Wessels, but a groundout ended the at bat.
In the sixth inning, another runner stranded at third base. Marieke Jansen led off with a bunt-single, stole second and advanced on a flyout, but was unable to move on after that.
Judith van Kampen struckout eight batters and gave up only two basehits, but survived some hard hits. In the fourth inning, there was the line-out by Bianca Hardeveld and in the sixth, centerfielder Marieke Jansen made a great catch on a drive by Fabiënne Stuart.
In the eighth (tie-break), Centrals came close again to the opening run. Pinch-runner Nienke Meester advanced to third base on a sac-bunt by Judith van Tiel, then Marieke Brouwer struckout. Next batter Marjorie Henriquez grounded back to Judith van Kampen, who misplayed the ball, but recovered in time to throw her out on a close play at first base, preventing a run.
In the home eighth, tie-break runner Petra van Heijst moved to third on a single through the infield by Nina van Huissteden, then scored the lone run on a single to short rightfield by Linda Hoenderdos.

In Game Two, things went easier for Terrasvogels, which rallied for nine runs in the second inning. Except for Yvette Krooder, all players scored at least once.
In the first at bat, they scored the first run when Petra van Heijst walked and scored on a single by Linda Hoenderdos.
Centrals came back with two runs in the second inning to take a 2-1 lead. Maud Braakman reached on an infield-hit and Fabiënne Stuart doubled, then both scored when Solange Starrenburg also doubled.
But that lead was shortlived. In the second inning, American pitcher Randi Nielson, who started her fourth game in three days, had problems finding the zone, gave up six hits, walked three batters and hit another one. This all resulted in a 9-run rally, but only the first two runs were earned. The nine runs were scored with two outs! With one out, Nathalie Gosewehr doubled and Olga Kleinlooh walked. After a flyout, the bases were loaded when Petra van Heijst also walked. Marieke Jansen then followed with a 2-run single. The inning could have ended there, but then an error was made on a hit by Nina van Huissteden, after which the rally really started. Despite the run- and basehit-production, pitcher Randi Nielson was left in and completed the disastrous inning. The error resulted in another run, then the bases were loaded again when Linda Hoenderdos reached on an infield-hit. Runs were then scored on a walk for Annemiek van Riessen and an infield-hit by Femke Haage, followed by a 2-run single by Nathalie Gosewehr. Another basesloaded situation was realized when Olga Kleinlooh was hit by a pitch and this time Yvette Krooder followed with a 2-run single to make it 10-2. The inning finally ended when Petra van Heijst, the 14th batters in the inning, flied out.
In the third inning, Hedwig van Beekum took over the pitching for Centrals and gave up two more runs. Marieke Jansen led off with an infield-hit and scored on a triple by Nina van Huissteden, who then scored on a wild pitch.
Centrals scored its third run in the fifth at bat on three consecutive singles.
