BUSSUM (Neth.) - After losing their first two games of the season, Sparta/Feyenoord today registered its first victory, winning big vs. Mr. Cocker HCAW, 13-3. All nine starting Sparta/Feyenoord-players scored at least one run, while eight of them had at least one basehit, except for Sape Wagenaar.
After two scoreless innings, Sparta/Feyenoord took a 3-0 lead in the third at bat. HCAW-starter Kevin Roovers, who last Sunday held Corendon Kinheim to only two hits in five innings in his first start of the season, today gave up six and failed to complete the fourth inning. With two outs in the third, Roovers gave up singles to former teammate Gino Henson (who played for HCAW the last few years) and Harvey Monte, then Percy Isenia followed with a 3-run homerun, before the righthander ended with a strikeout.
Sparta/Feyenoord then blew open the game with a 9-run fourth inning. In the at bat, eight of the nine players scored a run. The lone exception was Harvey Monte, while Roderick Simon scored twice. The first six batters all reached base (all off Roovers) and would all score. Roderick Simon led off with a single and stole second base, then scored when an error was made on a grounder by next batter Patrick Wabbijn. Roovers then hit Sape Wagenaar with a pitch, which was followed by a 2-run double by Shaldimar Daantji. Next, Ramphis Trinidad was also hit by a pitch and when Gino Henson added an RBI-single, Roovers was replaced by Joey Eijpe, who completed the game. After a flyout, the rally continued with a 2-run double by Percy Isenia, a walk and another 2-run double, this time by Roderick Simon (his second hit in the at bat) and an RBI-single by Patrick Wabbijn, before two pop-flies ended the inning.
Despite five consecutive Sparta/Feyenoord-batters reached base in the fifth, none of them scored. The first two were retired on a force play, then, with runners on first and second base, the lead runner was thrown out at the plate, trying to score on a single. Trailing 12-0, HCAW scored its first run in its fifth at bat off starter Rob Cordemans. In the first four innings, only two batters had reached base off the veteran righthander, who now gave up back-to-back singles to Ronald Jaarsma and Bart Gabriëls. Cordemans recovered and struckout the next two batters, but then gave up an RBI-single to Juriën overman.
After both teams turned a double play in the sixth inning, Sparta/Feyenoord added a run in the seventh. With one out, Ramphis Trinidad (fielder's choice) scored on an infield-hit by Nick Eppinga. In the home half of the seventh, HCAW scored two more runs off Venezuelan Arístides Almenar, who had arrived a few days before and now made his big league-debut. In his first inning, the righthander was greeted with three basehits. With one out, Bart Gabriëls doubled, then Adrian Anthony hit a homerun. Almenar then hit next batter Sebastiaan Olgers with a pitch, which resulted in a little discussion wether this was on purpose after Almenar had give up the homerun. Anyhow, Almenar followed with a strikeout, but then walked Ralph Milliard and gave up a single to Jermaine Esprit which loaded the bases. The Venezuelan then ended the inning by striking out Diederik Klaassen and that also meant the end of the game, as the 10-run difference had remained intact.
