HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Konica Minolta Pioniers on Saturday handed MediaMonks RCH another big loss by winning 17-1. The Hoofddorp-team collected 20 basehits for the second time in only three games. They also had 20 hits in the season-opener vs. Sparta/Feyenoord.
Despite having 20 basehits, one player in the starting line-up was the lone one to not only failing to hit a basehit, but also to score a run. All other eight players scored at least once and had at least one basehit. The lone exception was Norbert Lokhorst. Glenn Romney and Dè Flanegin led the team by both hitting 4-for-5. Besides that, Romney had four RBI's and Flanegin scored three runs. Rookies Mervin Gario and Sergino Martis each went 3-for-5. Gario, as did Jourick Blanco, had three RBI's, while Martis scored three runs.
The first inning started very well for RCH, as rookie third baseman Reggie Valpoort accounted for all three putouts and made some nice plays, espially when he retired Mervin Gario on a hard grounder towards third. But in the second at bat, Pioniers decided the game with a 9-run rally on nine basehits, including five extra basehits. With one out, Dè Flanegin doubled down the third baseline (barely fair), then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Joey Treurniet. Singles by Sergino Martis and Michael Duursma then loaded the bases, followed by back-to-back 2-run doubles by Mervin Gario and Glenn Romney and a 2-run homerun by Jourick Blanco, his second of the season. It marked the end for Mexican starter Al Morales Gomes, who threw 26 pitches in this at bat, after already have thrown 21 in the first inning. Rookie Joran Klarenbeek took over, gave up a single to Mark Duursma, then another foulline-double to Dè Flanegin, which was followed by an outfield-error, enabling Duursma to score. Flanegin then scored himself moments later on a single by Joey Treurniet. Except for Norbert Lokhorst, who was retired twice in this at bat, all other players had a basehit and scored in this inning.

After Rick Pluijmers became RCH's third pitcher in the game, two runs were added in the third inning on back-to-back RBI-doubles by Glenn Romney and Jourick Blanco. Four more runs followed in the fourth. Dè Flanegin led off with a homerun, followed by a single by Sergino Martis. The bases were then loaded when an error was made on a force play-grounder by Michael Duursma and a single by Mervin Gario. A single by Glenn Romney produced another run and after an infield-fly, the following run was scored when Mark Duursma was hit by a pitch. Hereafter, Pluijmers was relieved by Martin Kuipers. Pluijmers realized a rare feat. He faced 14 batters and started and ended by hitting the Duursma-brothers. In the third, he hit lead-off batter Michael Duursma and now in the fourth, he ended by hitting his brother Mark. An error on a grounder by Norbert Lokhorst then produced another run.
In the fifth, Pioniers made it 17-0 on a single by Mervin Gario and a basesloaded walk for Bart Sabel. RCH scored its lone run in the sixth inning off reliever Robin van Doornspeek. Starter Daan de Jong had thrown five strong innings and gave up only one basehit, a bad-hop infield-hit by Jim Leijenaar to lead off the fifth at bat. In the sixth, Van Doornspeek gave up three hits. Mike Pluijmers led off with a single, then moved on a 2-out single by Jakub Malik and scored when Ferd van Stekelenburg followed with another single. In the seventh inning, Dave Draijer took over and retired the side, including two strikeouts to end the game.
