ROTTERDAM (Neth.) - DOOR Tridents, which last season captured the Dutch title in the First Division, on Friday-evening won its first game of the season with a 10-0 shutout vs. Jeka. This weekend, the first Interleague-games of the season are played between teams of Pool A and Pool B of the First Division.

Last weekend, Tridents opened the 2007 with two losses. On Saturday, they lost 5-1 to Sparta/Feyenoord 2, then on Sunday a 6-5 loss vs. Omron Pioniers followed. Opponent Jeka opened its campaign with a split against PSV. They started with an 8-5 loss on Saturday, then won 6-2 on Sunday at home. Last season, Jeka finished in tenth and last place in Pool A and initially relegated to the Second Division, but expansion of the Pool to twelve teams prevented them from going down to a lower division.

Wouter Lensselink went the distance for Tridents in this game, which ended in the eighth inning due to the 10-run difference mercy-rule, thanks to four runs who weren't supposed to have been scored. Lensselink struckout eleven batters, walked three and gave up only three basehits, two of them being hit by Roël Martis, who is one of the players on the Jeka-roster with Dutch big league-experience. Lensselink needed 117 pitches to register the shutout. After retiring the first seven batters in a row, Lensselink gave up an infield-hit to Stan Koolen, who then stole second base, but stranded there. In the fourth inning, Roël MartisM led off with a single, but was forced out. In the fifth, Jeka came closest to a run, as it got runners on second and third base with one out. After Charlie Consension flied out, Lensselink walked Stan Koolen. Hereafter, second baseman Sergeï Leon committed two errors on a grounder by Ernst Cremer to put runners on second and third base. But then Lensselink struckout Wolfgang Rojer and ended the at bat with a groundout. In the sixth, Roël Martis led off with a walk, but hereafter Lensselink retired the next eight batters, before giving an infield-hit to Roël Martis.

Tridents threatened right away in the first inning when Jonathan Martina led off with a single and went on to reach third base, but stranded there. In the second inning, Tridents broke open the game by scoring four runs off starter Jeremy Ishak. Erik van Dorp led off with an infield-hit, then Friso Arkenbout also singled. The bases were loaded when Aschwin Rokx walked. Anthony Vrolijk, who made his big league-debut with DOOR Neptunus on Thursday-evening, followed with a 2-run single to give his team a 2-0 lead. After a flyout, Tridents added two runs on a single by Sergeï Leon.

Another run was scored in the third inning. With one out, Erik van Dorp singled and went on to score on a double by Aschwin Rokx, but Tridents left the bases loaded behind. After the double by Rokx, Jeremy Ishak was relieved by Caspar Dunant, who initially silenced the Trident-offense. He first hit Anthony Vrolijk with a pitch to load the bases, but then retired 12 of the next 14 batters he faced. After retiring eight in a row, he gave up a single to Anthony Vrolijk in the sixth, but then a double play followed. In the seventh, Jonathan Kopra led off with a single, then Mike Bazuin lined in a double play.

Leading 5-0, Tridents decided the game with a 5-run rally in the eighth, but only one run should have been scored. Erik van Dorp led off with a double, then moved on a passed ball and scored on a single by Friso Arkenbout. With Arkenbout on first, Aschwin Rokx came to bat. While Arkenbout took off to steal second base, Rokx struckout, but the ball went passed catcher Steven Fischer. He couldn't find the ball, which was somewhere near the backstop. When Fischer had retrieved the ball, Arkenbout had reached second base and Rokx was on first. According to the rules, Rokx should have been called out (strikeout), as first base was occupied with less than two outs, but that didn't happen and no one argued the situation. Hereafter, Antony Vrolijk flied out and Jonathan Martina singled, followed by a strikeout for Sergeï Leon, which should have end the inning with a 6-0 score. But now, there were two outs with the bases loaded. Next, Jonathan Kopra singled in two runs and Mike Bazuin followed with a 2-run triple to end the game with a 10-run score.
