DSS expands roster and gains more depth
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS will have to do without veteran player Nathalie Gosewehr next season, but the team added five players, which gives the team some more depth. The transfer-period ended at 5 PM on Thursday (December 1).

Norman Ames returns as Head Coach and will be assisted again by Nick Tieman.

This year, DSS finished in fourth place in the regular season with a 21-14 record. Hereafter, the team finished in third place in the Play-Offs to reach the Play-Off Semi-Final. DSS was then eliminated for the Holland Series after losing the best-of-one against Terrasvogels.

,,Replacing Nathalie Gosewehr is difficult'', Head Coach Norman Ames states. ,,We strengthened the left-side of the infield, added some fine players and have a wide roster. Yes, I am well satisfied.''

Veteran outfielder Nathalie Gosewehr has retired after the season after having played for 14 years in the highest division. With other veterans Areke Spel and Dagmar Bloeming, Gosewehr was a leader in the team this year, which was her first with DSS. Before that, Gosewehr had played for DSC '74, Terrasvogels and Sparks Haarlem. She also played one season in Italy.

The former National Team-player was the second best hitter of DSS with a .433 batting average (39-for-90) with seven doubles, four triples and one homerun. Gosewehr struckout only six times and led the team in basehits (39), runs scored (30), doubles (7), triples (4) and stolen bases (8). She was second in runs batted in with 18, one behind Australian Belinda White, who will return to Haarlem next year.

Some of the younger players, who were on the roster this season and gained experience when they were inserted, left to play for Onze Gezellen in the Silver League. They are catcher/infielder Marijn Crouwel, infielder Rachel Heus and utility Sanne Halderman.

Of these three, Crouwel got the most playing time. She appeared in 12 games and batted .143 (3-for-21) with a double, while scoring two runs and batting in one.

Halderman and Heus were mostly used as pinch-runner. Halderman played in three games and got one at bat, while Heus played in five games and scored one run.

Kelly Koeman, who didn't play this season, has transfered to Terrasvogels. She was on the roster of DSS, where she had made her big league-debut last year.

Sophie Bugter and Stephanie Ruiter, who both play at third base and can also be used as back-up catcher, came to DSS. Lisa Waasdorp, who plays in the outfield and also can play at first base, and young and talented infielder Feline Poot also are newcomers. Making her comeback in the big league after two years is righthanded pitcher Femke van Dusschoten.

Sophie Bugter played for De Glaskoning Twins this season, the club where she has played almost her entire big league-career. Except for 2013 when she played for Alcmaria Victrix. This year, Twins made its comeback in the Golden League, but relegated again. Bugter was the third best hitter of the team with a .333 (30-for-90) batting average with four doubles and two triples. She scored nine runs and led the team with 16 runs batted in and 13 walks. Her 30 basehits were second-best of the team.

Stephanie Ruiter played in the first part of the season for FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem. She was mostly used as designated player, but also saw some action in the outfield and behind the plate. In twelve games, she batted .281 (9-for-32) with one double, scored six runs and batted in seven.

Lisa Waasdorp was the third best hitter for Terrasvogels this season with a .261 average (24-for-92) with three doubles and three triples. She scored 24 runs and batted in 16, while leading the team with 19 walks.

Infielder Feline Poot this year played in the Silver League for Ban-Topa Future Stars, but also played for Almere '90 before that. Some years ago, she played the Dutch Juniors White Team.

Righthander Femke van Dusschoten last pitched in the Dutch big league in the 2014 season for Terrasvogels and then was 11-3. In 2012, the former National Team-pitcher won the Dutch Championship-title playing for Alcmaria Victrix. In 2015, the righthander pitched in Italy.
