Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Dutch reigning champion Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem lost some depth in its team, as two players retired and three others left the team during the transfer-period, which ended at 5 PM on Thursday (December 1).

The Haarlem-squad added one new player to its roster, while another was transfered, but might be available only during the postseason.

Peter van Dalen is returning for his third season as Head Coach and will be assisted again by Erik Vrugt. The coaching-staff is expanded with Edward Franka.

This year, Sparks Haarlem finished in first place in the regular season with a 26-8 record. Hereafter, the team also finished in first place in the Play-Off series to reach the Holland Series. In the best-of-one Championship Final, Sparks Haarlem won against Terrasvogels to repeat as champion.

When the season ended, the team said goodbye to veteran righthanded pitcher Kirsten Scheele and infielder Kiki Draaijer, who both retired.

During the transfer-period, three players left, all infielders. Cindy van der Zanden and Manoa Weijgertse both went to Roef!, which will make its debut at the highest level next year. Damishah Charles, who studies in the USA through the end of May, returned to De Glaskoning Twins, which this year relegated from the Golden League to the Silver League. Charles and Van der Zanden both also played in the outfield.

This season, Cindy van der Zanden was the fifth best hitter of Sparks Haarlem with a .398 batting average (35-for-88) with six doubles and three triples. She scored 13 runs and batted in 24. Her 24 RBI's were second best in the squad, only two behind leader Maxime van Dalen. Her 35 basehits were third best, six behind Kehli Washington, who led the team with 41 hits, and four behind Anne Blaauwgeers, who had 39.

Damishah Charles, who this year ended in fourh place with the Netherlands National Team during the World Championship in Canada, closed the regular season with a .309 batting average (21-for-68) with two doubles and two triples. She scored 14 runs and batted in eight.

Kiki Draaijer batted .232 (13-for-56) in 20 games, scored three runs and batted in seven.

Manoa Weijgertse appeared in only eight games this year between her two college-seasons in the USA. The infielder batted .346 (9-for-26) with one double and one triple, scored eight runs and batted in five.

Righthander Kirsten Scheele was 8-4 in 17 games (11 starts) and led the team with an 1.68 ERA. In 75 innings, she struckout 80 batters, walked only 13 and gave up 61 basehits.

Wearing the shirt of Sparks Haarlem for the first time next year will be infielder Onaïsha Franka. This season, she played for Euro Stars in the Silver League, but also played in the Golden League with the Talent Team Holland (National Under-22 team). She was the team's third best hitter with a .356 batting average (16-for-45), scored nine runs and batted in six, while stealing five bases. This year, she played for the National Under-22 Team that captured the European Championship-title in the Czech Republic.

Also transfering to Sparks Haarlem is righthanded American pitcher Monica Perry. She pitched for Terrasvogels in its Championship-season 2013 and then was 6-2 with 46 strikeouts in 54 innings. She remained on the roster of Terrasvogels in following seasons, but didn't played for the team. Instead, she pitched in Italy in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, while pitching in Australia in the winter monts. Currently, Monica Perry again is active in Australia, then will return to Italy coming season. When the Italian season has ended, she can join Sparks Haarlem for the postseason.
