Terrasvogels loses three players, but adds five
Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - Dutch vice-champion Terrasvogels lost two players during the transfer-period, which ended at 5 PM on Thursday (December 1). The team added five new players, so it will have depth in the team next season.

Another player has retired, while two non-playing players transfered to other clubs.

Amongst the five new players are two players of the National Team of Germany.

Nick Braakman is returing as Head Coach after having made his debut in this position in the highest league this year. Initially, Braakman was the lone coach of the team, but since May, he was assisted by Frans van Dusschoten, who also had been an Assistant Coach last year. Van Dussschoten retired (again) after the season. Next year, Braakman gets a surprising new Assistant Coach, as Ferenc Jongejan will make his debut as a softball-coach. The last four years, Jongejan had been the Head Coach of the baseball-team of Pickles UVV in the Dutch big league. After this season, Jongejan stepped down and now has decided to go into coaching sofball.

This year, Terrasvogels finished in second place with a 22-13 record. To claim second place, a tiebreaker was needed against FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem. In the following Play-Offs, Terrasvogels finished in second place again. It then won the Play-Off Semi-Final against DSS to reach the Holland Series. Terrasvogels then lost the best-of-one Championship Final against Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem.

In the transfer-period, Terrasvogels saw its two lefthanded hitting powerhitters leave, being Jessie van Aalst and Lisa Waasdorp. Both played at first base and in the outfield, while Van Aalst also was available as a lefthanded pitcher. Righthanded pitcher Malou van Dusschoten retired after the season.

With the leaving of Jessie van Aalst and Lisa Waasdorp, Terrasvogels lost two of its three best hitters of this season.

Van Aalst led the team with a .495 batting average (54-for-109) with 15 doubles, two triples and two homeruns. The National Team-player also led the team in runs (33), basehits (54), doubles (15), homeruns (shared with 2), runs batted in (shared with 26), slugging average (.725) and on-base average (.549). With her .495 average, Van Aalst was the fourth best hitter in the league and led the Golden League with her 15 doubles.

Waasdorp was the third best hitter of the team with a .261 average (24-for-92) with three doubles and three triples. She scored 24 runs and batted in 16, while leading the team with 19 walks.

Malou van Dusschoten was 7-7 with two saves and a 3.01 ERA this season. In 111 2/3 innings (which led the league), she struckout 80 batters.

Righthanded pitchers Femke van Dusschoten and Monica Perry both have been on the roster of Terrasvogels in the past seasons, but didn't play for the team.

Van Dusschoten last pitched in the Dutch big league in the 2014 season for Terrasvogels and then was 11-3. In 2012, the former National Team-pitcher won the Dutch Championship-title playing for Alcmaria Victrix. In 2015, the righthander pitched in Italy.

American righthander Perry pitched for Terrasvogels in its Championship-season 2013 and then was 6-2 with 46 strikeouts in 54 innings. She remained on the roster of Terrasvogels in the following seasons, but didn't played for the team. Instead, she pitched in Italy in the 2014 and 2015 seasons, while pitching in Australia in the winter monts. Currently, Monica Perry again is active in Australia, then will return to Italy coming season. When the Italian season has ended, she can join Sparks Haarlem for the postseason.

Five new players will play for Terrasvogels in 2017, amongst them two players of the German National Team, being pitcher Claudia Volkmann and infielder Katharina Szalay. The others are righthanded pitcher Femke Duffhues, infielder Kelly Koeman and catcher/infielder Kiona Domacasse.

Both Claudia Volkmann and Katharina Szalay played for Wesseling Vermins this year, but have also played for Paderborn Untouchables before that. Both won the German Championship-title with Wesseling in 2010 and play for the German National Team since 2011. Before that, Volkmann and Szalay also have played in the National Junior-squad. Szalay already was on the roster of Terrasvogels this year, but only played for the squad during the Indoor Cup in January.

Righthanded pitcher Femke Duffhues has played her entire big league-career for Twins. This season, she was 2-11 with one save and a 7.27 ERA for De Glaskoning Twins, which relegated in its first year back in the highest league. She struckout eleven batters in 68 1/3 inning. Offensively, she batted .194 (6-for-31) with three runs batted in.

Kelly Koeman didn't play this season, but was on the roster of DSS, where she had made her big league-debut last year. Before that, she played in the second highest league for Amsterdam Pirates.

Kiona Domacasse, who comes from Curaçao, played for Euro Stars this year.
