Roef! shuts out UVV and promotes to Golden League
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Roef! shutout UVV 7-0 on Saturday (October 8) in the best-of-one Final in the Golden League/Silver League Promotion/Relegation Series to promote to the Golden League. It marks the first time that Roef! will play at the highest Dutch softball-level.

The team takes the place of Twins, which relegated on Saturday after losing to 7-6 to Roef! in the best-of-one Play-Off. With the promotion of Roef!, the southern province of Noord-Brabant is secured of a team in the Golden League, as Twins came from the same region. Roef! becomes the fifth team from Noord-Brabant to play at the highest level, following Ducks, Nuenen, Twins and Gryphons.

Today's game initially was scheduled for last Sunday (October 2) as the second game to be played on Day 2 of the 'Season Finals Weekend', which was then hosted at the site of Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem in Haarlem. After the first game of that day was played, the match-up between Roef! and UVV went underway, but was interrupted by rain in the top of the third inning, then halted definitively. At the moment, the game was interrupted (for the third time), it was scoreless.

Later in the day, the best-of-one Holland Series between Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels was cancelled due to the weather conditions. Both the Promotion/Relegation Final and the Holland Series were re-scheduled for today, both again at the site of Sparks Haarlem. Today, the weather cooperated fine.
Sparks Haarlem nipped Terrasvogels 1-0 in eight innings to win its third consecutive Dutch Championship-title.

Roef! collected eight basehits, including three by Sophie Mollee (3-for-3), who also batted in two runs. Charlotte Haen also batted in two runs. The first three hitters in the Roef! batting order, Wies Ligtvoet, Eva van Knegsel and Jasmin Kaiaruna scored six runs combined. They each scored two runs.

This season, Roef! closed the season in a tie for first place of the Silver League Promotion Pool with UVV. UVV then won an one-game tiebreaker to reach the Play-Off Final, while Roef! first had to play an one-game Play-Off against Twins. Roef! was led for the second season by Belgian Head Coach Jeroen Swers, while Australian Karen Marr joined the coaching-staff this year as Pitching Coach. The last few years, Marr also is the Pitching Coach of the Netherlands National Women Softball Team.

UVV vs. Roef!
A week ago, Roef! faced pitcher Jessica Vogel-Hall in the game against UVV, which was halted in the top of the third inning due to rain. She only played for UVV in the first half of the season, as was scheduled, then returned home to play in the USA. Last weekend, Jessica Vogel returned to pitch in the Promotion/Relegation Final for UVV, but the game rained out. Today, UVV had to do without her again.

Marjolein Merkx went the distance for Roef! and struckout seven batters. The righthander gave up only two basehits. With two outs in the fifth inning, her No-Hitter ended when Yaelle van Blanken singled into centerfield. Helma Pluim registered the second basehit for UVV with one out in the sixth inning.

UVV-starter Melissa Burger had a good start and retired the side in the first inning. The righthander then gave up an one-out single to Sophie Mollee in the second inning, who moved on a sacrifice bunt bunt by Ilse van Kerkoerle. A walk for Naftely Pietersz followed, but Roef! stranded two runners.

Roef! then struck with four runs in the top of the third inning. Lead-off hitter Gini Ketelaars was hit by a pitch and advanced on a passed ball. She then scored when next batter Wies Ligtvoet followed with an infield-hit. The latter advanced on the throw to the plate, then Roef! got another baserunner when Eva van Knegsel also was hit by a pitch. Roef! doubled it lead on a following double by New Zealander Jasmin Kaiaruna. The first out was then recorded on a grounder by Charlotte Haen, but that also led to the third run. Moments later, Kaiaruna moved to third base on a single by Sophie Mollee, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Ilse van Kerkoerle. A throwing error on a grounder by Naftely Pietersz led to runners on first and third base, but the inning then ended when pitcher Melissa Burger caught a comeback line drive off the bat of Ennia Ballardini.

UVV had reached base in its first two at bats. By the way, UVV reached base in each of its at bats in this game, but was unable to score. In the first, with two outs, Helma Pluim walked, but was caught stealing. In the second, with one out, Michelle van Waveren also walked, but stranded on first base.

Trailing 4-0, UVV reached base again in the third at bat. With two outs, Laura Arp walked, then Naomi Andringa reached on an error, but both were left behind.

In the top of the fourth inning, Roef! added two more insurance runs (with two outs) and with that, it more or les decided the game. With one out, Wies Ligtvoet was hit by a pitch and moved on a grounder. Jasmin Kaiaruna was then walked intentionally, but Charlotte Haen followed with a runscoring single. Hereafter, Cintia de Groodt took over the pitching, but she was greeted with a runscoring single by Sophie Mollee that lifted the lead to 6-0. Haen advanced to third base on the single, but then was ruled out moments later for interference, ending the inning.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, UVV got into scoring position for the second (and last) time. With one out, Michelle van Waveren walked, but was forced out on a grounder by Marleen van Gastel. The latter moved on a wild pitch, but then was caught stealing at third base shortly thereafter.

After Roef! left a runner on second base in the top of the fifth, UVV broke the No-Hitter of Marjolein Merkx in the bottom of the at bat. With two outs, Yaelle van Blanken singled, but stranded on first base.

Roef! then reached the 7-run difference in the top of the sixth inning. With one out, Eva van Knegsel walked, then the bases got loaded when Jasmin Kaiaruna reached on a bunt-single and Charlotte Haen singled into centerfield. The seventh run was then scored when Sophie Mollee followed with a sacrifice fly.

In the bottom of the sixth, Helma Pluim singled for UVV with one out. Hereafter, Marjolein Merkx followed with a strikeout, then a grounder ended the game. With that, Roef! won 7-0 to promote to the Golden League.
