Terrasvogels wins double-header against Tex Town Tigers
Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - On Saturday (May 14), Terrasvogels won its double-header against Tex Town Tigers.

Terrasvogels shutout Tex Town Tigers 6-0 in the opener, scoring four runs in the sixth inning. Terrasvogels collected 11 basehits, including three by Jessie van Aalst, who also scored twice and batted in one run. Malou van Dusschoten went the distance and struckout nine batters.

In the second game, Terrasvogels broke a 7-7 tie in the fifth inning when Jeske Meewisse hit an one-out line drive homerun into centerfield. In the next at bat, the team added four runs, including one on another line drive homerun, this time hit by Kimberly Jones. For both Meewisse and Jones, this was their first out-of-the-park-homerun in the highest division. Jones had homered once before, but that was an inside-the-park-homerun on June 19, 2011 when she played for Alcmaria Victrix. Back then, she hit a 2-run homerun off of Amanda Lindsey, which resulted in a 2-1 win against Olympia Haarlem.

Terrasvogels collected 17 basehits, including four by Jeske Meewisse, while Jessica Waasdorp batted in four runs. All nine starting players collected at least one basehit. Nienke Verhofstad went the distance for Terrasvogels.

Terrasvogels vs. Tex Town Tigers (Game One)
Malou van Dusschoten went the distance for Terrasvogels for the fifth time this season. The righthander held Tex Town Tigers to only six basehits and held the Enschede-team scoreless, despite getting the bases loaded twice. Experienced Tex Town Tigers lead-off hitter Nadine Marinus reached base four times, including twice on a basehit, but she stranded each time, including three times in scoring position.

In the top of the first inning, Nadine Marinus led off with a single and stole second base, then Amber Krijgsman reached on an error. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Annemiek Jansen, but hereafter Van Dusschoten closed with two strikeouts.

Terrasvogels then scored two runs in its first at bat off of Cheyenne Scheffer. Kimberly Jones led off with a double, then the bases got loaded when Ella Krommendijk walked and Jessie van Aalst singled. Jones was then forced out at the plate on a grounder by Lizzie Clarijs, but then two runs were scored with two outs on a walk for Lisa Waasdorp and a single by Jeske Meewisse.

In the next three innings, Tex Town Tigers left two runners behind in scoring position, then got the bases loaded in the fifth.

In the third, Nadine Marinus led off with a bunt-single, moved on a sacrifice bunt and a grounder, but stranded on third base. In the fourth, Myrthe Smid walked with one out and moved on a wild pitch. With two outs, Marije Oosting-ten Thij singled. With runners on first and third base, Tex Town Tigers inserted a pinch-hitter and that was the player with the most beautiful and exotic name in the league. New Zealander Te Reo Powhiri Manautia made her debut in the Golden League, but grounded out to end the inning. She became the fourth player from New Zealand to play in the highest league. In 1995, Kylee Stevens was the first when she played for HCAW. In 2008, Katrina Stockford (now named Katrina Nukunuku) followed and she also played for Tex Town Tigers and earlier this year, Tyla Morrison became the third when she made her debut for FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem.

In the fifth, lead-off hitter Nadine Marinus was hit by a pitch and Amber Krijgsman singled, which led to runners on first and third base. After the latter stole second base, the bases were loaded with an intentional walk for Laura Wissink, which also created a force play. But two pop-flies then ended the at bat.

Tex Town Tigers again got the bases loaded in the sixth. With one out and Marije Oosting-ten Thij (fielder's choice) on first base, Shaneequa Kock reached on a bunt-single, then the bases got loaded when Nadine Marinus reached on an error. But TTT again left the bases loaded, as a strikeout and flyout followed.

Since scoring twice in the first at bat, Terrasvogels left six runners behind, including four in scoring postion. The team got the bases loaded in the second inning. Lead-off hitter Rhowan Stuart was hit by a pitch and with one out, Ella Krommendijk (bunt) and Jessie van Aalst singled. But hereafter, an infield-fly resulted in an inning-ending double play.

In the third and fourth inning, a runner stranded on second base. In the fourth, TTT's short stop Myrthe Smid made a great defensive play on a hard grounder by Ella Krommendijk. Smid played for Terrasvogels in the past three seasons.

Terrasvogels then struck with four runs in the bottom of the sixth inning. With one out, Kimberly Jones tripled and scored on a following double by Ella Krommendijk, who scored on a following single by Jessie van Aalst. Hereafter, Lizzie Clarijs also singled and two runners were added when Jessica Waasdorp reached on an error to lift the lead to 6-0.

During the game, Gabi Obia arrived and was added to the list of eligible players for Terrasvogels in the game. Moments earlier, she had arrived at Schiphol International Airport, returning from her year of study and playing at college in the USA. She immediately changed into her Terrasvogels-uniform and was ready to play if needed. However, she just could relax today and didn't played yet.

Terrasvogels vs. Tex Town Tigers (Game Two)
In the second game, Terrasvogels led 7-2 after two innings, but Tex Town Tigers came alongside in the fifth. Terrasvogels then broke the 7-7 tie in the bottom of the fifth when Jeske Meewisse hit an one-out homerun. In the next at bat, the team added four runs, including one on a homerun by Kimberly Jones.

Initially, Tex Town Tigers took a 2-0 lead in the top of the first inning, scoring two unearned runs. Nadine Marinus (who also reached base four times in this game) led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt and a grounder. Laura Wissink then walked and an error on a grounder by Isa Los opened the score. The bases got loaded when Myrthe Smid walked, then a passed ball made it 2-0, but two runners were left behind.

Terrasvogels answered with a 6-run rally. Lead-off hitter Kimberly Jones reached on an error, then Ella Krommendijk singled. With one out, singles by Lizzie Clarijs and Jessica Waasdorp tied the score. A following single by Lisa Waasdorp then gave Terrasvogels a 3-2 lead and led to a pitching change. Daniëlle ten Donkelaar took over for starter Shaneequa Kock, but she was greeted with a single by Jeske Meewisse that loaded the bases. A grounder by Sanne Korpel and a 2-run triple by Rhowan Stuart then lifted the lead to 6-2.

Terrasvogels added a run in the second inning when Jessie van Aalst singled with one out, moved on a single by Lizzie Clarijs and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessica Waasdorp.

Tex Town Tigers came back into the game by scoring two runs in the fourth and three in the fifth at bat to come alongside. In the fourth, Myrthe Smid led off with a double and advanced on a single by Daniëlle ten Donkelaar. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Monique Mooi-ter Steege, but that enabled Smid to score. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Nadine Marinus walked and Amber Krijgsman singled. A run was then scored on a single by Annemiek Jansen, but three runners were left behind when a grounder ended the bat.

In the fifth, Isa Los and Myrthe Smid led off with a walk. The first was then forced out on third base on a hit into leftfield by Daniëlle ten Donkelaar. Monique Mooi-ter Steege followed with a runscoring single and when an error followed, another run was added. With two outs, Mooi scored the tying run on a single by Nadine Marinus.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Terrasvogels re-took the lead. With one out, Jeske Meewisse drilled the ball into centerfield for a line drive homerun that made it an 8-7 score.

In the next inning, Terrasvogels took more distance by scoring four runs. Kimberly Jones led off with another line drive homerun into centerfield, then Ella Krommendijk and Jessie van Aalst singled. Hereafter, Anna-Bè Bartels took over the pitching for Daniëlle ten Donkelaar. A force play-grounder by Lizzie Clarijs then led to the first out, but then Jessica Waasdorp delivered a 2-run double. With two outs, the latter scored the next run on a single by Jeske Meewisse (who was 4-for-4) to lift the lead to 12-7.

In the top of the seventh inning, Nienke Verhofstad retired the side to throw her first complete game in a Terrasvogels-uniform.
