Twins wins twice against Terrasvogels in big league-comeback
Nederlands

OOSTERHOUT (Neth.) - De Glaskoning Twins celebrated its comeback on the highest level on Saturday (April 16) with two victories against Terrasvogels. The first game ended in a 2-0 shutout-win. In the second game, Twins broke an 1-1 tie in the fifth inning by scoring four runs to win 5-2.

Twins relegated after the 2012 season, but promoted back to the big league last year after winning the Promotion/Relegation Play-Off against Alcmaria Victrix.

The last time that Twins opened the big league-season with a double-header victory was in 2007 when they won twice against Centrals.

The young squad of Terrasvogels didn't had a completely fit team today, as some players are recovering from minor injuries. The last time that Terrasvogels opened the season with two losses was in 2002. Back then, the season opened with a single game on Saturday and on Sunday. Terrasvogels then lost its opener 4-3 to HCAW and lost the next day with the same score to Amsterdam Pirates.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. Terrasvogels (Game One)
Before the start of the first game, Twins opened its home season with the throwing of the ceremonial first pitch by Rosette Hensen, who is the CEO of Flexoclean, which recently became a sponsor of the squad. The softball-team is also named after De Glaskoning, which became the main-sponsor of both the baseball- and softball-team last month.

Terrasvogels outhit Twins 4-2, but nevertheless was left empty-handed in the opener.

In the first inning, Dervisa Mutic led off for Terrasvogels with a walk and stole second base, but was left behind.

Twins then opened the score in its first at bat off of Malou van Dusschoten, without hitting a basehit. The righthander, who hadn't pitched for over a week, hit lead-off hitter Minke Blok with a pitch in her first Golden League-at bat. She then advanced on a wild pitch and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Lieke Duffhues. Moments later, she scored on a sacrifice fly by Sandy Lauwers. Later in the at bat, Sophie Bugter walked, then Michelle van Bodegom singled in her first big league-at bat, but both were left behind.

Terrasvogels was retired in order in the second inning by American righthander Kaitlyn Medlam, who made her big league-debut, but also already pitched for the team last year. The Santpoort-team then got another runner in scoring position in the third. With two outs, Dervisa Mutic tripled, but was left behind again.

In the bottom of the third, Twins doubled its lead. And it was again Minke Blok who scored. As in the first at bat, she led off and again was hit by a pitch. With one out, she stole second base, then scored on a 2-out double by Sophie Bugter.

Terrasvogels stranded another runner in scoring position in the fourth inning. With one out, Jessie van Aalst singled and stole second base, but two outs followed.

In the fifth inning, rookie Sanne Korpel hit her first big league-basehit for Terrasvogels, but also was left behind. In the sixth, Terrasvogels got runners on second and third base, but was unable to score. With two outs, Jessie van Aalst singled, then an error on a fly by Lizzie Clarijs led to two runners in scoring position, but a grounder then ended the at bat.

After having scored its second run in the third inning, Twins didn't get into scoring position again in the remainder of the game. Malou van Dusschoten held Twins hitless, but the two early runs they scored were enough for the home team to start the new season with a victory.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. Terrasvogels (Game Two)
In Game 2 of the double-header, the score was tied at 1-1 when Twins rallied for four runs in the fifth inning.

After Twins-starter Femke Duffhues had retired Terrasvogels in order in the top of the first inning, she was supported with a run in the home half. And that went almost the same way as in the opener and without a basehit. Terrasvogels-starter Jessie van Aalst walked lead-off hitter Minke Blok, who then stole second base, moved on a flyout and scored on a sacrifice fly by Sandy Lauwers.

In the top of the second inning, Terrasvogels collected three basehits, but scored only once and left three runners behind. Jessie van Aalst led off with a double, then scored the tying run when Lizzie Clarijs followed with a single. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Rhowan Stuart. A single by Jessica Waasdorp followed, then the two runners advanced on a grounder by Jeske Meewisse. The bases got loaded when Sanne Korpel walked, but the three runners stranded when a grounder ended the at bat.

In the next three innings, Terrasvogels left five more runners, including three in scoring position. In the third, Kimberly Jones doubled with one out, then Jessie van Aalst walked, but a force out and line out followed. In the fourth, Jeske Meewisse singled with one out, but was left on second base. And in the fifth, Ella Krommendijk reached on an error, then Lizzie Clarijs walked with two outs, but they also were left behind.

Twins reached base only once in the second and third inning, then left two runners behind in the fourth. Sophie Bugter led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Michelle van Bodegom. Manon van Alebeek then singled, but hereafter Jessie van Aalst struckout the next two batters.

Twins then struck with four runs on five hits in the bottom of the fifth inning. Kate Geldof led off with a double, then scored on an one-out double by Lieke Duffhues to give Twins a 2-1 lead. Sandy Lauwers added a runscoring single, then an outfield-error followed on a fly by Sophie Bugter. Hereafter, Nienke Verhofstad took over the pitching, but she got the bases loaded when Michelle van Bodegom singled. Manon van Alebeek then followed with a 2-run single that lifted the lead to 5-1.

Terrasvogels scored another run in the top of the seventh inning, but again left two runners behind. Lead-off hitter Ella Krommendijk reached on an error, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Jessie van Aalst. An error on a force play-grounder by Lizzie Clarijs led to runners on first and second base. With two outs, Jessica Waasdorp singled. Van Aalst was waved home to score, but she was eliminated at the plate and that ended the game.
