Karin Tuk evens homerun-record in small win Sparks Haarlem
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Reigning champion Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem won only 3-2 and 4-2 against Tex Town Tigers on Saturday (April 23). A week ago, Sparks Haarlem won twice against DSS, including another small victory (5-3), then split its double-header on Sunday against the Talent Team Holland. Tex Town Tigers began the season with two losses at FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem.

Highlight of the day was the homerun Karin Tuk hit for Sparks Haarlem in the sixth inning of the second game. With that, she equaled the All-Time Homerun-record, which she now shares with Debby Connor. Both have hit 44 homeruns in their career.

Tex Town Tigers vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem (Game One)
Sparks Haarlem outhit Tex Town Tigers 9-4 in the opener, but won ony 3-2, trailed after three innings and scored the winning run in the seventh inning.

Sparks Haarlem opened the score with one run in the top of the first inning, but was unable to take more distance in following at bats. With two outs in the first, TTT-starter Daniëlle ten Donkelaar walked Damishah Charles, who then advanced on a passed ball and scored on a double by Maxime van Dalen.

In the second inning, Sparks Haarlem got its first two batters on base when Maaike Blaauwgeers walked and Jenny Kinburn reached on a bunt-single. The two moved on a grounder by Tammie Lijbers, but stranded on second and third base.

Tex Town Tigers also left some runners. Sparks-starter Leonella Elizabeth began with two strikeouts in the first inning, but then walked Annemiek Jansen. She moved on a passed ball, but was left behind. In the second inning, Nadine Marinus led off with a bunt-single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Isa Los and a wild pitch, but hereafter, Elizabeth closed with two strikeouts.

Trailing 1-0, Tex Town Tigers scored twice in the bottom of the third inning. Marije Oosting-ten Thij and Myrthe Smid led off with singles. With one out, they moved on a wild pitch and with two outs, they scored on a single by Laura Wissink.

Sparks Haarlem came alongside in the fifth inning. With one out, Kehli Washington reached on a bunt-single, then Karin Tuk walked. A following double by Damishah Charles made it a 2-2 score and led to runners on second and third base. To set up a force play, Maxime van Dalen was walked intentionally, which also led to a pitching change. Anna-Bè Bartels took over and after a flyout, she indeed got a force play-grounder, as Tuk was forced out at home.

In the bottom of the fifth, Tex Town Tigers got another baserunner. With one out, Marije Oosting-ten Thij walked and was replaced by pinch-runner Shaneequa Kock. Veteran righthander Rebecca Soumeru then took over the pitching. She saw Kock steal second base, but eliminated the next two batters.

In the top of the sixth, it was Sparks Haarlem's turn to leave another runner in scoring position. With one out, Tammie Lijbers singled and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Desiree Adriaansz, but was left behind.

The reigning champion then did score in the seventh at bat. Karin Tuk led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Damishah Charles. Maxime van Dalen was then walked intentionally (again), but this time, a runscoring single by Cindy van der Zanden followed that gave Sparks Haarlem a 3-2 lead.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rebecca Soumeru walked lead-off hitter Isa Los, who moved on a sac-bunt by Aafje van Baal. The experienced hurler then closed with two strikeouts to seal the win. But that win didn't come easy.

Tex Town Tigers vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem (Game Two)
After narrowly winning the opener with a 3-2 score, Sparks Haarlem led 4-0 in the second game when the bottom of the seventh inning began. But again, the suspense was building, as Tex Town Tigers scored twice and had the winning run in the batter's box. However, TTT stranded two runners and Sparks Haarlem won 4-2.

In both the first and second inning, Sparks Haarlem got a runner in scoring position, but was unable to score. In the first, lead-off hitter Kehli Washington was hit by a pitch, stole second base and moved on a wild pitch, but then stranded. In the second, Maaike Blaauwgeers led off with a single and stole second base, but also was left behind.

Sparks Haarlem then opened the score in the third at bat. Kehli Washington led off with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Damishah Charles and reached third base when Karin Tuk singled. A sacrifice fly by Maxime van Dalen then gave Sparks Haarlem its first run.

The lead was doubled in the fourth inning. With two outs, Tammie Lijbers doubled and scored on a following single by Desiree Adriaansz.

Another run was added in the fifth inning when Karin Tuk homered with one out. With that, she tied the All-Time Homerun-Record, which she now shares with former teammate Debby Connor. Both have hit 44 homeruns in their big league-career. Before today, Karin Tuk shared second place with Monique Fris after hitting her first homerun of the season a week earlier. Both Connor and Fris have retired.

In the top of the seventh inning, Sparks Haarlem made it a 4-0 score. Kehli Washington and Damishah Charles led off with singles and that led to a pitching change. Anna-Bè Bartels took over for starter Cheyenne Scheffer, but with one out, she gave up a runscoring single to Maxime van Dalen. Two force play-grounders followed, but Sparks Haarlem was leading 4-0 and that appeared to be comfortable.

Tex Town Tigers faced Kirsten Scheele, who went the distance for Sparks Haarlem. The veteran righthander retired the first seven batters in a row, including five strikeouts (she struckout the side in the first). With one out in the third, she gave up a single to Monique Mooi-ter Steege, but she was later forced out.

In the fourth inning, TTT got its first runner in scoring position when Amber Krijgsman and Annemiek Jansen (bunt) both singled. However, both were forced out.

After being retired in order again in the fifth and sixth inning, Tex Town Tigers suddenly had a productive seventh at bat. Laura Wissink and Nadine Marinus led off with singles. The first was forced out on third base on a grounder by Isa Los, but the bases got loaded when Daniëlle ten Donkelaar singled. Hereafter, pinch-hitter Aafje van Baal delivered a 2-run single to make it a 4-2 score. A week ago, she hit a pinch-hit, 2-run double against Olympia Haarlem. With Ten Donkelaar on second base and pinch-runner Romy van der Wielen on first base, batter Marije Oosting-ten Thij represented the winning run in the batter's box. However, she hit a comeback-grounder that resulted in a force out, then next batter Myrthe Smid flied out to end the game.
