Walk-off homerun gives Terrasvogels two wins against Olympia Haarlem
Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - A week ago, Terrasvogels opened the new season in the Golden League with two losses against De Glaskoning Twins, which made it comeback in the big league. On the same day, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem started with two victories against Tex Town Tigers.

Today, Saturday, April 23, the roles were reversed, as Terrasvogels won twice against Olympia Haarlem. Both games ended with an one-run difference, 5-4 and 8-7.

In the second game, Terrasvogels trailed 7-3 with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning. The team then staged a 5-run rally, ending with a walk-off, 3-run, inside-the-park-homerun by Jessie van Aalst to win 8-7.

With that, Terrasvogels was the better team in both games, as it was leading 5-1 after five innings in the first match-up.

One of the coaches of Olympia Haarlem this season is Kate Gentile, who has been a very valuable player for Terrasvogels, playing five seasons for the team (2010-2014).

Terrasvogels vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (Game One)
Terrasvogels was outhit 11-9, but registered its basehits at the right moment to win the opener, 5-4. While it was not really a pitching-duel, Malou van Dusschoten (Terrasvogels) and Eva Voortman (Olympia Haarlem) both went the distance and were have a good outing. Van Dusschoten struckout 10 batters, Voortman struckout 11.

Eva Voortman led off the top of the first inning for Olympia Haarlem with a single off of Malou van Dusschoten. Moments later, she was ruled out for running out of her baseline while trying to avoid being tagged out while attempting to steal second base. Van Dusschoten eliminated the next two batters, then retired the side in the second inning, including two strikeouts.

As a pitcher, Eva Voortman began with two strikeouts in her first inning, then gave up a single to Kimberly Jones, but she stranded. Terrasvogels then opened the score in the second inning. Lizzie Clarijs led off with a double, then Lisa Waasdorp singled with one out. Hereafter, the latter stole second base and at the same time, Clarijs stole the plate to give the home team the lead.

That was shortlived, as Olympia Haarlem came alongside in the third inning. New Zealander Tyla Morrison led off with a single. With two outs, Eva Voortman walked, then Dinet Oosting singled to make it an 1-1 tie.

Terrasvogels answered immediately by scoring three runs in the bottom of the third, which proved to be decisive. Dervisa Mutic led off with a walk, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Ella Krommendijk, then scored on a following single by Kimberly Jones. Next batter Jessie van Aalst also singled and when an outfield-error followed, it led to runners on second and third base. The two scored when Jessica Waasdorp doubled down the leftfield-line to give Terrasvogels a 4-1 lead.

In the top of the fourth, Rachel van Veen led off with a double for Olympia Haarlem, but overran second base and was eliminated. In the fifth, French player Pauline Prade led off with a single for the Haarlem-squad, but later was caught stealing.

Terrasvogels added an insurance run in the fifth inning, which in the end was the difference in the final score. With one out, Kimberly Jones (who was 3-for-3) and Jessie van Aalst singled to put runners on first and third base. Lizzie Clarijs added a runscoring single to make it 5-1, but two runners were left behind.

In the top of the sixth inning, the suspense got back into the game, as Olympia Haarlem narrowed its deficit to 5-4. Dinet Oosting led off with a homerun, then Stephanie Ruiter singled and Rachel van Veen doubled. Maranca Ham then following with another single to bring in a bring to make it a 5-3 score. With runners on second and third base, Mariëlle Vleugels was inserted as pinch-hitter. With first base open, she of course was walked intentionally. Not only to create a force play, but also to pitch around the powerhitter. Hereafter, Tyla Morrison delivered a sacrifice fly that brought in Van Veen and made it an one-run-difference-score. Malou van Dusschoten then recovered and closed the inning strongly with two strikeouts!

Olympia Haarlem got two baserunners with one out in the top of the seventh inning, but good defensive work by Terrasvogels prevented them from scoring. With one out, Dinet Oosting walked and Stephanie Ruiter singled. Oosting was then forced out on third base on a grounder by Rachel van Veen and a pop-fly ended the game.

Terrasvogels vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (Game Two)
In the second game, Terrasvogels staged a come-from-behind 5-run rally with one out in the bottom of the seventh inning to win 8-7. Highlighting the rally was a walk-off, 3-run, inside-the-park-homerun by Jessie van Aalst. She was 4-for-4 in the game, missed only the double to hit for-the-cycle and now leads the league with a .769 batting average (10-for-13).

Olympia Haarlem failed to hold onto a lead twice. The team was leading 3-0 in the fifth inning, but then Terrasvogels came alongside. In the next two at bats, Olympia re-took the lead and made it a 7-3 score, which set up the very productive seventh at bat for the home team.

Olympia Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the first inning off of starter Jessie van Aalst. With one out, Dinet Oosting tripled and scored on a following single by Stephanie Ruiter. The bases got loaded when Rachel van Veen singled and Maranca Ham reached on an error. Tyla Morrison then singled to make it a 2-0 score. Hereafter, a force out at the plate and a strikeout ended the inning, meaning three runners were left behind.

Jessie van Aalst then retired the side in the second and third inning. In the fourth, Judith Buschman was hit by a pitch, but she stranded on second base.

Olympia Haarlem added a run in the top of the fifth when Dinet Oosting led off with her second triple in the game and went on to score on a 2-out single by Maranca Ham.

Tyla Morrison pitched for Olympia Haarlem. She retired the side in the first inning, then was supported with a double play in the second at bat. The New Zealand-hurler then retired the side again in the third and fourth inning (including three strikeouts).

But in the bottom of the fifth, trailing 3-0, Terrasvogels came alongside. Jessie van Aalst led off with a triple, then Jessica Waasdorp walked with one out. An error on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Waasdorp then led to the first run. A pinch-hit single by Sanne Korpel brought in the next run and a 2-out single by Dervisa Mutic resulted in a 3-3 score.

Olympia Haarlem immediately re-took the lead in the next inning, scoring three unearned runs. Lead-off hitter Pauline Prade reached on an error, then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Judith Buschman. Pinch-hitter Mariëlle Vleugels then was hit by a pitch and was replaced by pinch-runner (and Assistant Coach) Laura Burggraaf. Hereafter, Eva Voortman hit the ball into centerfield, which ended in a force out on third base and would have been the third in the inning. But now there were two outs and there were two runners on base. The bases got loaded when Dinet Oosting walked. Hereafter, Stephanie Ruiter singled to bring in two runners and Rachel van Veen added an RBI-single to make it 6-3. That led to a pitching change. Nienke Verhofstad took over and would become the winning pitcher.

Terrasvogels left two runners behind in the sixth inning, then Olympia Haarlem added a (foreign) run in the seventh. Tyla Morrison (New Zealand) then led off with a triple and scored on a grounder by Pauline Prade (France). With that, Olympia Haarlem led 7-3, which appeared to be comfortable.

That changed in the bottom of the seventh inning, which had a spectacular finish. Lead-off hitter Rhowan Stuart (who celebrated her 18th birthday today) was hit by a pitch, then Dervisa Mutic singled with one out and Ella Krommendijk added a runscoring single. The single was followed by a throwing error, which also enabled Mutic to score. Hereafter, Kimberly Jones reached on an error, which led to runners on first and third base and brought Jessie van Aalst in the batter's box. She drilled the first pitch she saw into deep centerfield and circled the bases for a walk-off, 3-run, inside-the-park-homerun that gave Terrasvogels an 8-7 victory!
