10 homeruns (3 grand slams) and a No-Hitter on Day 2 Mastenbroek Tournament
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - On Day 2 of the 34th edition of the annual J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament all 13 scheduled games could be played as scheduled. While it sometimes drizzled a little, the weather conditions were acceptable. And that's something that has been a factor is several previous tournaments when it was sometimes windy, rainy and cold. Four years ago, the event was cancelled due to snow!

On Saturday (April 1), there were some big scores, some small scores, but overall, the games were attractive. And it was a productive day for the batters, as 10 homeruns were hit today, including grand slams by Jasmine Peters, Karin Tuk and Cindy van der Zanden.

There also was a No-Hitter today, pitched by veteran pitcher Rebecca Soumeru.

After winning the opening game on Friday-evening, host Tex Town Tigers added two victories today to become the unbeaten leader in Pool A.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem won three games today and leads Pool B with a 3-0 record.

On Sunday, the remaining games will be played in the two Pools. There will be two crucial games on Sunday that will decide first place and thus the two teams that will qualify for the Final later in the afternoon.

In Pool B, Sparks Haarlem meets SK Joudrs Praha at 10:25 AM with the winner of that game becoming the first finalist.

At 11:50 AM, in Pool A, the game between Tex Town Tigers and FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem will decide first place. The winner of that game will become the second finalist.

Starting at 1:15 PM, the games will be played to decided third through tenth place. The Final is scheduled to start around 4 PM.

SK Joudrs Praha vs. Germany
In its first game on Saturday-morning, SK Joudrs Praha from the Czech Republic led 2-1 after the first inning, but ended up empty-handed, losing 3-2.

In the top of the first inning, the National Team of Germany opened the score off of Adéla Linková, who went the distance for Joudrs. Anneke Swierstra led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and the stole third base. When a throwing error followed trying to avoid that, Swierstra was able to score the first run.

Joudrs answered with two runs in its first at bat off of starter Mona Hörner. Tereza Jakešová led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Veronika Klimplová. The latter then stole second and scored when Eva Rendlová followed with a double. She then moved to third base on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Julie Coufalová to put the Czechs ahead. But was to be it for Joudrs in this game.

With one out in the third, Rendlová again doubled. However, the veteran player tried to stretch it into a triple and was eliminated at third base.

In the top of the fourth, Joudrs short stop Veronika Klimplová made an unassisted double play. In the bottom of the fourth, Joudrs had runners at the corners with one out, but was unable to add an insurance run. The lead runner was picked off on third base, then a flyout ended the at bat.

A long fifth inning followed. The time-limit for a game is seven innings or 70 minutes, but this game took 30 minutes longer to complete.

In the top of the fifth, Germany scored twice to re-take the lead. With one out, the bases got loaded when Athina Zuber singled, Anneke Swierstra reached on an error and Miriam Kemmer also singled. With two outs, Lisa Marie Köllner singled through the middle to bring in two runners and put Germany ahead, 3-2.

In the bottom of the fifth, Claudia Volkmann took over the German pitching. She gave up a lead-off single to Kateřina Růžičková, who was forced out on a grounder by Tereza Jakešová. After the latter stole second base and with two outs, an intentional walk followed to create a force play. But Volkmann ended the inning and the game with a strikeout to earn a save. This season, Volkmann will be one of the pitchers of Terrasvogels in the Golden League.

Barracudas vs. Tex Town Tigers
After winning only 1-0 in its opening game on Friday-evening, host Tex Town Tigers started the second day with a big 18-2 win against the Swiss team of Barracudas. Australian newcomer Jasmine Peters had a major contribution in the win. She was 3-for-4, including two homeruns, batted in seven runs and scored three. Canadian newcomer Olivia Hornstein scored four runs for Tex Town Tigers. In the opening game on Friday against Terrasvogels, both made their debut in the TTT-squad. Hornstein then was 1-for-2 and Peters 0-for-2.

Tex Town Tigers decided the game in the top of the first inning with a 12-run rally. All nine players batted twice in this at bat, collecting ten basehits, including a single and triple by Olvia Hornstein, a single and homerun by Laura Wissink and two singles by Cheyenne Scheffer. Jasmine Peters also homered in this opening inning.

Olivia Hornstein led off the game with a single, then Annemiek Jansen walked. With one out, they scored when Laura Wissink homered to set the tone for the inning and the game. With that, the long rally started and one hit after another, mostly extra-basehits, followed. Aafje van Baal added a runscoring double, Cheyenne Scheffer singled in a run, then Daniëlle ten Donkelaar brought in a run with double and Olivia Hornstein followed with an RBI-triple in her second at bat. Next, a run was scored on a single by Annemiek Jansen and hereafter, Jasmine Peters hit a 2-run homerun. The scoring wasn't over yet, as a wild pitch and another runscoring single by Scheffer lifted the lead to 12-0.

Two runs were added in the second inning. Olivia Hornstein led off with a walk and Annemiek Jansen singled, then a double by Jasmine Peters accounted for the first run. Later, Nadine Marinus singled in the next run.

Four runs were then scored in the third inning and again Australian newcomer Jasmine Peters was involved. With one out, the bases got loaded when Lindsey Meadows walked, Daniëlle ten Donkelaar reached on an infield-hit and Olivia Hornstein reached on an error. Herefater, Meadows was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Anna-Bè Bartels, but hereafter, Jasmine Peters drove the ball over the centerfield-fence for a grand slam homerun!

Trailing 18-0, the Swiss team scored its lone two runs in the bottom of the third. Kimberley Zehnder then led off with a single and Lena Gfeller doubled. Moments later, Zehnder scored on a double by Adeline Glauser, but Gfeller was eliminated at the plate when she also tried to score. With two outs, Glauser scored the second run on a single by Muriel Vuille.

Kimberley Zehnder will also play for Tex Town Tigers this season in the Golden League.

DSS vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem
Reigning Dutch champion Sparks Haarlem opened the score with one run in the top of the first inning and that was all it needed in this game. The team was held to only one basehit, which wasn't even hit in the opening at bat.

With one out in the top of the first inning, Anne Blaauwgeers walked and stole second base. New Zealander and newcomer Kingsley Avery then also walked. Hereafter, Blaauwgeers stole third base, while Avery advanced on a the throw. With two outs, the lone run in the game was then scored on a wild pitch!

In the second inning, Maaike Blaauwgeers led off with a walk, but stranded on third base. In the top of the third inning, Kehli Washington led off with the lone basehit that Sparks Haarlem registered, but was left behind on second base.

Sparks Haarlem got a chance to add at least one (maybe more) run in the fourth when it got the bases loaded. Quincy Catsburg took over the pitching for DSS-starter Svenja de Lincel and did something unique. The righthander walked four batters, but didn't gave up a run! She first walked lead-off hitter Karin Tuk, who was then caught stealing. Hereafter, Maaike Blaauwgeers walked and stole second base. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Tammie Lijbers and Onaisha Franka also walked. But hereafter, a grounder ended the at bat, leaving three runners behind.

For DSS, Lisa Waasdorp led off the bottom of the first inning with a walk, but hereafter, pitcher Ginger de Weert struckout the next three batters. Waasdorp and De Weert were teammates two years ago when both played for Terrasvogels.

In the second inning, Sophie Bugter led off with a single, but was caught stealing. De Weert then retired the side in the third, but got two baserunners in the bottom of the fourth. With one out, Areke Spel reached on an infield-hit and with two outs, Sophie Bugter walked. De Weert then secured the minimal lead by ending the inning and the game with another strikeout.

Roef! vs. Terrasvogels
After losing the opening game on Friday-evening against host Tex Town Tigers with a small 1-0 score, Terrasvogels today began the day with a 6-0 shutout-win against Roef!, which will make its Golden League-debut in two weeks. They then will face Terrasvogels again in its opening double-header.

Terrasvogels opened the score with two unearned runs in the top of the first inning. Lead-off hitter Katherina Szalay reached second base when a throwing error was made on her bunt. She advanced on an infield-hit by Ella Krommendijk, who later stole second base. The bases got loaded when Lizzie Clarijs walked. With one out, Szalay was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Kimberly Jones, but hereafter, two runs were scored on a single by Kelly Koeman.

Terrasvogels added a run in the third. With one out, Lizzie Clarijs singled, advanced on an error, stole third base and scored on a 2-out single by Kimberly Jones.

In the fourth at bat, Terrasvogels lifted the lead to 6-0 off of pitcher Gini Ketelaars, scoring three runs with two outs. Rhowan Stuart led off with a single, then the bases got loaded with one out. Katherina Szalay reached on a bunt-single and Ella Krommendijk was hit by a pitch. An infield-fly then accounted for the second out, but a following wild pitch enabled Stuart to score moments later. Singles by Suka Van Gurp and Kimberly Jones then brought in the next two runs to make it a 6-0 score.

Terrasvogels-starter Femke Duffhues walked lead-off hitter Wies Ligtvoet in the bottom of the first inning, but hereafter, Kim Donkers lined into a double play. Duffhues then gave up a triple to Cindy van der Zanden, but she stranded on third base.

In the second inning, Roef! again left runners in scoring position. Eva van Knegsel led off with an infield-hit, then moved when Ilse van Kerkoerle's force play-grounder ended in an error. The two then moved on a grounder, but stranded on second and third base.

In the fourth, Naftely Pietersz doubled with one out for Roef!, but would be left behind on second base.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Barracudas
After losing 18-2 in its previous game, the Swiss squad suffered another big loss, this time being shutout 13-0 by Olympia Haarlem, which collected 13 basehits.

Olympia Haarlem, which last year was eliminated for the Final Championship Round in the Play-Offs, opened the score with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Mariëlle Vleugels led off with a walk, then the bases got loaded with one out when Shareday Christina and Jessie van Aalst both singled. Van Aalst joined the team in the transfer-period, coming from Terrasvogels. Hereafter, the first two runs were scored on a single by Dinet Oosting. With two outs, two more runs were added on two wild pitches.

Two more runs were scored with two outs in the second inning. With one out, Eva Voortman singled, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and scored on a double by Jessie van Aalst. Dinet Oosting then walked and after the two had moved on a wild pitch, Brenda Beers delivered a runscoring single to make it 6-0 score.

A 7-run rally lifted the lead to 13-0 in the third at bat. Maranca Ham, who was 3-for-3, led off with a double, then former TTT-player Amber Krijgsman reached on an infield-hit. Ham then scored on a sacrifice fly by Emma Wojcik. Hereafter, Judith Buschman followed with a runscoring infield-hit. Masha Meloni then walked and another run was scored when Dinet Oosting singled. When next batter Brenda Beers walked, the bases got loaded and all three runners scored when Rachel van Veen followed with a baseclearing double. The final run was scored on a double by Maranca Ham..

In the top of the second inning, with one out, Kimberley Zehnder singled and with that registered the lone basehit for the Swiss squad. But she stranded on second base. With one out in the fourth inning, Adeline Glauser walked, but a double play then ended the game.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. SK Joudrs Praha
After having lost its first game earlier in the day, Joudrs registered its first victory against Twins, which last year relegated from the Golden League and will play in the Silver League this season. The Czechs won 10-1.

Joudrs opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning. Tereza Jakešová led off with a double and scored on an one-out triple by Eva Rendlová, who later scored herself on a wild pitch.

Twins got one run back in its first at bat. Nina Oomes then walked with one out, advanced on a grounder and scored on a double by Michelle van Bodegom. But this would be the lone run Twins scored.

Joudrs then decided the game with a 7-run rally in the top of the second inning on four basehits. Anetta Prokopenková led off with a walk and Jana Furková then reached on a bunt-single. The bases got loaded when no out was made on a fielder's choice-grounder by next batter Michaela Poláková. With one out, a run was scored when Tereza Jakešová walked. More runs were added and the bases stayed full on three consecutive runscoring singles by Veronika Klimplová, Eva Rendlová and Julie Coufalová. Hereafter, the next runs were scored when Adéla Weissová was hit by a pitch and Anetta Prokopenková walked. A pitching change followed and Sheila van der Tang took over. She saw another run being scored on a passed ball, but then struckout the next batter and a pop-out ended the long at bat.

Joudrs scored another run in the fourth on a 2-out double by Jana Furková.

In the bottom of the second inning, with one out, Sheila van der Tang singled, but hereafter, a grounder by Ellinor Keepers led to an out, a rundown and a double play.

In the bottom of the fourth, Twins got its next runners. With one out, Michelle van Bodegom singled, but was forced out on a grounder by Sterre den Duijn. Newcomer Ismay Poot followed with a single, but the two runners were left behind.

Tex Town Tigers vs. Roef!
After being shutout in its first game, Roef! took an early lead in its next game, but in the end was left empty-handed, losing 6-2 to Tex Town Tigers.

Roef! scored twice in the top of the first inning off of starter Cheyenne Scheffer. Former TTT-player Isa Los led off with a single and stole second base, then advanced on an infield-hit by Ilse van Kerkoerle. Cindy van der Zanden followed with another basehit to bring in the first run. When an outfield-error followed, Roef! got baserunners on second and third base, then Kim Donkers hit the fourth consecutive basehit to make it a 2-0 score. With runners on first and third base and no outs, the next three batters were retired, leaving the two runners behind.

Tex Town Tigers anwered with three unearned runs off of Marjolein Merkx, who went the distance for Roef! and gave up 10 basehits. With one out, Lizzy Uytendaal singled and advanced on an error. She moved to third base on a single by Lindsey Meadows, then scored on a single by Laura Wissink. A throwing error on a grounder by Jasmine Peters led to two runs and gave TTT a 3-2 lead.

In the top of the second inning, with a 3-2 lead, Anna-Bè Bartels took over the pitching from Cheyenne Scheffer. In exhibition games (but also in tournaments and All Star Games), there are different rules to credit a pitcher with the win, as pitchers mostly throw with pitch-counts or are used for a limited total of innings and will not pitch the required total of innings. The same rules are applied during Major League Spring Training and the World Baseball Classic. Therefore, starting pitchers don't have to pitch the required total of innings they have to throw to become the winning pitcher in the regular season. With that, Scheffer became the winning pitcher and Bartels was credited with a save, as she pitched the final three innings of the game. Bartels did a fine job, as she gave up no more basehits in the remainder of the game, struckout four batters and retired all nine batters she faced. When this would have been a regular season-game, Bartels would have been credited with the win.

TTT added a run in the third inning. With two outs, Jasmine Peters doubled and scored on a single by Nadine Marinus.

In the fourth, TTT lifted the lead to 6-2. With one out, Olivia Hornstein singled, advanced on a wild pitch and scored on an infield-hit by Lizzy Uytendaal. The latter was forced out on a grounder by Annemiek Jansen, who then also advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Laura Wissink.

Germany vs. DSS
DSS began the tournament earlier today with a minimal 1-0 loss against Sparks Haarlem, but in this game, it registered a shutout of its own, winning 5-0 against the National Team of Germany, which had won its first game.

DSS opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning. Lisa Waasdorp led off with a walk, then moved on a grounder by Morgan Sampson and a single by Areke Spel. Noa Brand followed with a 2-run double to put DSS ahead.

After leaving two runners behind in the second inning, DSS added three runs in the third at bat, two of which were unearned due to an error. With one out, Noa Brand and Sophie Bugter singled to put runners on first and third base. A grounder by next batter Denice van Dijk led to a run, but she herself reached on a throwing error, which led to runners on second and third base. With two outs, two more runs were scored on a double by Annemiek de Rover to make it a 5-0 score.

Dagmar Bloeming went the distance for DSS and gave up only three basehits. The righthander gave up 2-out single to Miriam Kemmer in the first inning, who advanced on a passed ball, but then stranded.

In the second inning, Nina Wunn led off with a single for Germany, but also would be left behind on second base.

Kemmer reached on a bunt-single in the fourth inning, but was lated eliminated in an inning-ending unassisted double play by 1B Noa Brand on a line drive by Wunn.

In the fifth, Bloeming struckout three batters to end the game.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. De Glaskoning Twins
That veteran righthander Rebecca Soumeru still is a very reliable pitcher was underscored in this game, as she threw a 4-inning No-Hitter.

Sparks Haarlem collected five basehits, but won 10-0, ending the game via the mercy-rule in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Sparks Haarlem stranded two runners in the first inning, but then struck with six runs in the next at bat. Five runs were unearned due to two errors. Jenny Kinburn led off with a double, stole third base and scored with one out when a sacrifice bunt by Tammie Lijbers ended in an error. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Kehli Washington walked and Anne Blaauwgeers also reached on an error. The next run was then scored when Kingsley Avery walked. That brought Karin Tuk in the batter's box. The all-time Homerun-leader connected well and hit a grand slam homerun to make it a 6-0 score. It was the second grand slam of the day, as Jasmine Peters (Tex Town Tigers) also hit one earlier.

With two outs in the top of the first inning, Rebecca Soumeru hit Minke Blok with a pitch. Moments later, she was ruled out for leaving first base too early. Blok was the lone player of Twins Soumeru allowed to reach base, as she retired the next nine batters in a row.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Sparks Haarlem reached the 10-run difference. Desiree Adriaansz led off with a single and Kehli Washington walked. A single by Anne Blaauwgeers then led to a run and a pitching change. Sheila van der Tang took over from Carling Hare, but got the bases loaded when she hit Kingsley Avery with a pitch. Hereafter, Karin Tuk walked to bring in the next run and a passed ball made it 9-0. The bases were re-loaded when Maaike Blaauwgeers walked and the game ended (with no outs) when Jenny Kinburn delivered a walk-off, runscoring single.
