Olympia Haarlem extends winning streak to ten games
Nederlands

MOERGESTEL (Neth.) - Unbeaten league-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem extended its winning streak to ten games by winning its double-header against Roef! on Saturday (May 6).

Olympia Haarlem won both games with the same score, 10-2. In the opener, the team trailed 2-0 after two innings, but then scored three runs in the third inning and took more distance in the fifth and sixth at bat.

In the second game, Olympia Haarlem needed only one inning, as it scored all ten runs in the second at bat.

With today's victories, Olympia Haarlem became the first team to start the season with ten consecutive wins since Sparks Haarlem won its first 28 games to start the 2015 season.

Roef! vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game one)
In today's opener, Olympia Haarlem faced a 2-0 deficit after two innings, but it could have been more, as Roef! stranded two runners in both the first and second at bat.

Initially, it was Olympia Haarlem that left a runner in scoring position in the top of the first inning. With one out, Eva Voortman walked, stole second base and moved on a wild pitch, but she was then left behind on third base.

In the bottom of the first inning, as starting pitcher, Eva Voortman gave up the first run. Wies Ligtvoet led off with a single and got into scoring position thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Denisa Podzimková, who made her debut today in the Dutch big league. The Czech National Team-player played for Joudrs Praha, with whom she finished ion second place last year at the European Premiere Cup in Italy. In 2015, she won the bronze medal with the Czech squad at the European Championship in Rosmalen (Netherlands).

Ligtvoet moved to third base on a single by Kim Donkers, then scored when next batter Isa Los also singled. Hereafter, Cindy van der Zanden also appeared to hit a basehit. However, leftfielder Tomoko Goda got the ball in time on third base to force out Donkers. Two runners were left behind when a grounder ended the inning.

After Roef!-starter Marjolein Merkx had retired the side in the top of the second inning, the home team added another run. Lead-off hitter Charlotte Haen was hit by a pitch and advanced on an one-out single by Ilse van Kerkoerle and a wild pitch. With runners on second and third base, Wies Ligtvoet delivered a runscoring single. That made it 2-0 and again resulted in runners on second and third base, but they were left behind.

In the top of the third inning, Olympia Haarlem scored three runs to turn the game its way. With two outs and Shareday Christina (fielder's choice) on first base, the bases got loaded when Eva Voortman singled and Mariëlle Vleugels walked. A run was then scored on a passed ball and Jessie van Aalst followed with a 2-run single to make it a 3-2 score.

In the bottom of the third, Australian pitcher Ellen Roberts took over from Eva Voortman and retired nine of the ten batters she faced in the three innings she threw. She struckout the side in the fourth inning.

After being retired in order in the fourth, Olympia added three more runs in the fifth inning. With one out, Ellen Roberts doubled and hereafter, Gini Ketelaars took over the pitching for Roef! She walked Mariëlle Vleugels, saw the two runners advance on a wild pitch and then gave up a 2-run triple to Jessie van Aalst, who went on to score herself when Dinet Oosting followed with a single. Stephanie Pearce was then inserted as pinch-runner for Oosting and tried to score on a following double by Brenda Beers, but was eliminated at the plate.

In the sixth inning, Olympia Haarlem rallied for four runs to reach a mercy-rule run-difference. With one out, Maranca Ham singled and Masha Meloni walked, which led to another pitching change. Kim Horsten took over the pitching and made her debut this season for Roef!, but not in the big league. In the Opening Weekend, she already had made her debut at the highest level pitching in the Talent Team Holland. She gave up a runscoring single to Ellen Roberts, then got the bases loaded when Mariëlle Vleugels also singled. After the latter was replaced by pinch-runner Emma Wójcik, a run was scored when Amber Krijgsman walked. Hereafter, two more were added when Stephanie Pearce followed with a 2-run single to increase the lead to 10-2.

In the bottom of the sixth inning, Eva Voortman took over the Olympia-pitching again. With one out, she struckout the next three batters. Three? Yes, the first batter reached on a wild pitch, but then was left behind.

Roef! vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game two)
In the second game, Olympia Haarlem needed only one inning to decide the game, as it scored all ten runs in the second at bat. Last year, it was Sparks Haarlem, who did the same. Back then, on June 12, Sparks Haarlem also scored 10 runs in the second inning against the Talent Team Holland and won 10-2. A month earlier, Sparks Haarlem already had scored 11 runs in one inning.

After leaving a runner on second base in the first inning, Olympia Haarlem did its scoring in the second at bat on nine basehits. Dinet Oosting opened the rally with a lead-off homerun, then Eva Voortman and Shareday Christina (bunt) both singled. A double-steal was then followed by a throwing error, resulting in the next run. With one out, Stephanie Pearce singled and then Emma Wójcik and Brenda Beers delivered runscoring singles, followed by an RBI-double by Mariëlle Vleugels and RBI-single by Jessie van Aalst. The bases got loaded when Dinet Oosting walked in her second at bat in the inning. That brought in Marjolein Merkx to take over the pitching from starter Mikayla Endicott. She was greeted with a 2-run double from Eva Voortman and two more runs were added on two wild pitches. Hereafter, Olympia Haarlem left two runners behind, but it led 10-0.

The Haarlem-squad got an opportunity to add more runs in the next inning, but then left three runners behind.

Olympia-starter Ellen Roberts retired six batters in a row in the first two innings, then was replaced by Mariëlle Vleugels. With two outs, she saw Naftely Pietersz hit a single and then gave up a 2-run homerun to Wies Ligtvoet that made it a 10-2 score. In the next two innings, Vleugels retired the side to end the game.

For Wies Ligtvoet, this was her second big league-homerun, but first in almost three years. She hit her first one at the highest level on June 1, 2014 while playing for the Netherlands Junior Team (now Talent Team Holland) against Gryphons. Back then, she hit an inside-the-park-homerun in the first game of a double-header in Rosmalen. Isa Los then also was her teammate in that game, while another current teammate Kim Donkers then played for opponent Gryphons.
