Olympia Haarlem also wins Jan de Wit Tournament

HAARLEM (Neth.) - On Sunday (April 9), FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem shutout Roef! 6-0 in the Final of the annual Jan de Wit Tournament. A week ago, Olympia Haarlem also had won the J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede, winning the Final against reigning Dutch champion Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem.

Last year, Olympia Haarlem also won both tournaments, which are the traditional final preparations for the upcoming season. The new season opens next Saturday, April 15.

Last year, Olympia Haarlem also went on to win the European Cup Winners Cup, but later was eliminated in the Play-Offs and with that missed the Season's Final.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. Carrousel
The second day began with a come-from-behind victory of Twins against Carrousel. Sheila van der Tang had a major contribution in the win. She not only silenced Carrousel after taking over the pitching, but also homered the tie the score in the sixth inning.

Carrousel led 5-2 halfway the third inning, but the Russian squad was unable to hold onto the lead.

Initially, it was Twins that opened the score in the first inning. With two outs, Minke Blok, Michelle van Bodegom and Claudia Kranendonk all walked to load the bases. Hereafter, a single by Ismay Poot and a walk for Sterre den Duijn produced two runs and gave Twins an early lead. A strikeout ended the inning, leaving three runners behind.

In the top of the second inning, Carrousel answered with four runs. Daria Semenova led off with a triple and scored on a bunt-single by next batter Tanya Beltykava. Three more bunts followed hereafter. First, Beltykava advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Sacha Chumanova. She then moved to third and scored when an error was made on a sac-bunt by Nastia Milaeva, which made it a 2-2 tie. Milaeva moved to second base on the error, advanced on a sac-bunt by Barysheva and scored on a triple by Jana Islamova. A single by Tanya Zushkova made it a 4-2 score.

The Russian squad added another run in the third. Daria Semenova again led off with a triple and this time, she scored on a double by Tanya Beltykava. Hereafter, Sheila van der Tang took over the pitching from Carling Hare and retired the next three batters.

In the remainder of the game, Carrousel would reach base only five more times, register only two more basehits and was held scoreless.

In the bottom of the third, Twins got one run back when Minke Blok led off with a homerun.

Twins was retired in order in the fourth and fifth inning, but then turned the game its way in the sixth and final inning.

Ismay Poot led off the sixth with a walk, then scored when Sheila van der Tang homered with one out to tie the score at 5-5. Hereafter, Nina Oomes singled and moved to second base on a bunt-single by Rose Mwaro. Next batter Imane Alou Issa then also placed a bunt to move the runners, but an error followed and that enabled Oomes to score the winning run and end the game.

France vs. Hamburg Knights
This game was decided in the first inning when Hamburg Knights had a very productive at bat, scoring 12 runs on eight basehits, sending 16 batters to the plate off of two pitchers.

It all started when Mie Tornblom led off with a triple and scored on a following double by Celine MacKenzie, who scored when next batter Alexandra Stüwe also doubled. The bases got loaded when Lisa Köllner was hit by a pitch and Robyn Adam reached on a bunt-single. Morgan McHenry followed with a 2-run single and an error on a fly by Lisa Biesenack accounted for the next run and a pitching change. The bases were re-loaded when Lennea Hayo was hit by a pitch. Hereafter, Ayla Bockelmann and Mie Tornblom both walked, bringing in two more runs and lifting the lead to 9-0. With that, all nine batters had reached base and all had scored, while there still was no out. Runscoring singles followed by Celina MacKenzie (2 runs) and Alexandra Stüwe (one run). On this last basehit, MacKenzie advanced to third base and scored while Stüwe was eliminated after trying to advance to second base. Lisa Köllner followed with a triple and scored the final run in this long at bat on a grounder by Morgan McHenry.

In the remainder of the game, Hamburg added only one more run.

That was scored in the fifth inning when Alexandra Stüwe and Lisa Köllner hit back-to-back doubles.

France scored three runs in the bottom of the first inning. Pauline Prade led off with a bunt-single, then scored on a 2-out single by Camille Riera. Carrie Pitcher followed with a single and two runs were scored when next batter Marjorie Brunel delivered a double.

France again scored three runs in the fourth, again with two outs. Pauline Prade (fielder's choice) was on first base and moved on a bunt-single by Camille Lemaire. After a double-steal, both scored on a double by >b>Raina Hunter, who scored herself moments later on a single by Camille Riera. The bases got loaded when Carrie Pitcher and Marjorie Brunel also single, but the three runners were left behind when a grounder ended the inning.

Euro Stars vs. Roef!
Roef! took an early lead in this Semi-Final by scoring four runs in the first inning. Wies Ligtvoet led off with a homerun down the leftfield-line. Hereafter, Eva van Knegsel triple and scored when next batter Kim Donkers reached on an error. With one out, Manon van Alebeek singled, then a run was scored when an outfield-error followed on a single by Mikayla Endicott. A single by Charlotte Haen lifted the lead to 4-0 moments later.

Three unearned runs were added in the second inning. Lead-off hitter Ilse van Kerkoerle reached on an error, then Wies Ligtvoet bunted for a basehit. With one out, Kim Donkers delivered a runscoring single. A double-steal by Ligtvoet and Donkers led to a throwing error and another run. Donkers went on to score the next run on a 2-out double by Manon van Alebeek.

Roef! increased its lead to 10-0 in the third at bat. With two outs, Wies Ligtvoet (who was 3-for-3) singled and Eva van Knegsel walked. Both scored on a following triple by Kim Donkers, who scored herself on a single by pinch-hitter Maureen van Poorten.

Euro Stars reached base only once. In the second inning, with out, Eliza van 't Zelfde doubled off of starter Mikayla Endicott, who then retired the next five batters. Marjolein Merkx retired the side in the fourth and last inning of this game.

With the win, Roef! clinched a spot in the Final.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Birds
Olympia Haarlem shutout Birds 6-0 in this Semi-Final to become the second finalist. In the Final, the tournament-host will face Roef!.

Olympia Haarlem scored two runs in the first inning to take an early lead. With one out, Brenda Beers and Mariëlle Vleugels walked, then respectively scored on a single by Jessie van Aalst and when Shareday Christina reached on an error. The bases got loaded when Eva Voortman walked, but hereafter, a double play ended the at bat.

In the second inning, with two outs, Olympia added its third run. Maranca Ham then reached on an error, advanced on a passed ball and scored on a triple by Brenda Beers.

Olympia Haarlem lifted the lead to 6-0 by scoring three more runs in the fourth. With one out, Maranca Ham singled and scored when Brenda Beers again tripled. Hereafter, Mariëlle Vleugels homered to make it a 6-0.

Olympia-starter Eva Voortman threw four hitless innings and struckout eight batters. The lefthander retired the first eleven batters she faced. With two outs in the fourth, she saw Lisa Hop reached on an error, but then closed with another strikeout.

Mariëlle Vleugels took over in the fifth inning and gave up the lone basehit. With one out, she walked Julie Winkel, then Jacqueline de Hoog singled. But that was to be it for Birds.

Carrousel vs. France
Carrousel finished in seventh place by nipping France, 3-2. The Russian squad lead 3-0 after five innings. France scored twice in the sixth, but ended up short.

Carrousel opened the score in the bottom of the second inning. Daria Semenova led off with a triple, then was able to continue running when an error followed. Hereafter, Tanja Beltrukova doubled, but was later eliminated at the plate.

After two scoreless innings and after a pitching change, Carrousel added two runs in the fifth. Natasja Makesina led off with a single, then an error followed on a sacrifice bunt by Vasilisa Sorokina, which led to runners on first and third base. Both scored on a double by Jana Islamova to make it a 3-0 score.

France left three runners behind in scoring position in the first five innings, but hereafter, a suspenseful at bat followed. The French squad then scored twice in the top of the sixth. Pauline Prade led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, she scored on a single by Raina Hunter. The bases got loaded when Camille Riera and Carrie Pitcher also singled. Moments later, Micha Labatut, the pinch-runner for Hunter, scored the second runner on a grounder by Marjorie Brunel. With that, France still had runners on second and third base with two outs. But the inning and the game ended when a flyout followed.

De Glaskoning Twins vs. Hamburg Knights
With a convincing 8-1 win, Twins finished in fifth place.

It was Hamburg that opened the score in the top of the first inning. With two outs, Alexandra Stüwe singled, advanced on an error and scored when Lisa Köllner followed with a single.

This was to be the lone run the German squad off of Sterre den Duijn, who went the distance for Twins.

Twins answered with two runs in its first at bat. Bobbi Scheurkogel led off with a single and scored all the way from first base when an error was made on a grounder by Rose Mwaro, who ended up on third base. Moments later, Mwaro scored the next run on another error, putting Twins ahead, 2-1. With one out, Twins got the bases loaded, but left three runners behind.

Twins scored unearned three runs in the second inning. Nina Oomes led off with a single, stole second base and scored when Bobbi Scheurkogel reached on an error. With one out, the next run was scored when Minke Blok also reached on an error. With two outs, the lead increased to 5-1 thanks to a double by Claudia Kranendonk.

Twins again scored three runs in the third. These runs were also unearned, as the German defense committed two more errors. Lead-off hitter Ellinor Keepers reached on an error, as did next batter Sheila van der Tang after a pitching change. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt, then the bases got loaded when Bobbi Scheurkogel was walked intentionally. A run was then scored on a grounder by Rose Mwaro, then Minke Blok followed with a 2-run single to make it an 8-1 score.

Euro Stars vs. Birds
After leaving two runners behind in the first inning, Euro Stars scored its two runs in this game in the second inning.

With one out, Kim van der Valk reached on an error and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Amy Gielen. Hereafter, Renske Jansen also reached on an error. Britt Amersfoort followed with a runscoring single, then the next run was scored when Romy van der Ham also reached on an error.

In the third inning, Euro Stars appeared to add at least one other run, as it had the bases loaded with one out. Radna Mambi led off with a single and Eliza van 't Zelfde walked. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Tanisha van Krevel and hereafter, the bases got loaded when Kim van der Valk also walked. But Birds-pitcher Jacqueline de Hoog then struckout the next batter and a flyout ended the inning.

Another scoring opportunity followed in the fifth. Radna Mambi then led off with a triple, but she was picked off at third base by catcher Fleur Bos.

Three Russian pitchers threw for Euro Stars in this game. With two outs in the third, Lisa Hop reached on an error for first, stole second base and moved on a wild pitch, but she later was eliminated in a rundown.

In the fifth, Kelsey Huijzers doubled with two outs for Birds. And in the sixth, Keedy Florentina singled with one out and advanced to third base. But both would be left behind and so, Euro Stars finished in third place.

Roef! vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem
In the Final, Olympia Haarlem shutout Roef! 6-0 to win its second tournament in two weeks. A week ago, Olympia also won the J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede.

Olympia Haarlem struck with four runs in the first inning. Stephanie Pearce led off with a walk and Eva Voortman singled, but then the first was forced out on a grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels. The bases got loaded when Jessie van Aalst walked. Hereafter, Rachel van Veen delivered a 2-run single and Brenda Beers followed with a runscoring single to make it a 3-0 score. With Van Veen on third base, Beers stole second base, then Van Veen scored on the throw.

In the fourth, Olympia Haarlem increased the lead to 6-0. With two outs, Eva Voortman (who was 3-for-3 with a walk) and Mariëlle Vleugels hit back-to-back doubles to bring in a run. The next run was scored when Jessie van Aalst followed with a single.

Eva Voortman threw another strong game. She retired the first eight batters in a row, then walked Maureen van Poorten with two outs in the third. The lefthander then retired the next nine batters again. With two outs in the sixth, Voortman's No-Hitter ended when Wies Ligtvoet singled. Hereafter, Voortman closed the inning, the game and the tournament with her eighth strikeout.
