DSS nips Sparks Haarlem and splits double-header

HAARLEM (Neth.) -
DSS split its double-header on Saturday (June 10) against Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem to move into a tie for fifth place.
Sparks Haarlem won the opener with a 5-3 score, then DSS nipped the reigning champion with an 1-0 score.
DSS is now tied for fifth place with Roef!, which lost twice today against FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem.
In the opener, Sparks Haarlem recorded only six hits, but led 4-0 in the fourth inning.
In the second game, DSS outhit Sparks Haarlem 6-3 and scored the lone run in the third inning.

DSS vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem (game one)
Sparks Haarlem decided the game early, scoring four runs in the first four innings.
DSS scored its three runs in the final three at bats, but ended a 5-game winning streak.
In the top of the first inning, Sparks Haarlem opened the score off of starter Quincey Catsburg.
With one out, Anne Blaauwgeers reached on a bunt-single, stole second base and scored on a 2-out single by Karin Tuk.
After leaving two runners behind in the second inning, Sparks Haarlem added a run in the third, but also stranded three runners.
Sparks Haarlem got the bases loaded quickly with no outs, but scored only once.
Lead-off hitter Anne Blaauwgeers was hit by a pitch, stole second base and reached third base on a wild pitch.
Hereafter, Maxime van Dalen walked and got to second base in fielder's indifference.
With first base open, Karin Tuk was walked intentionally to pitch around the powerhitter, but also to set up a force play.
After a flyout, the force play indeed followed, as Blaauwgeers was eliminated at the plate on a grounder by Kingsley Avery.
With the bases still loaded, the run was scored when Kehli Washington walked.
Three runners were left behind when another force play ended the at bat.
Sparks Haarlem increased the lead to 4-0 in the fourth inning by scoring two more runs.
With one out, Maaike Blaauwgeers and Anne Blaauwgeers (bunt) both singled.
Maxime van Dalen followed with a runscoring double, which was followed by an error, resulting in the second run.
Sparks Haarlem-starter Ginger de Weert held DSS hitless in the first four innings.
She walked Areke Spel with one out in the first inning, but she stranded on second base.
Stephanie Ruiter walked with two outs in the second at bat, but was left on first base.
After DSS was retired in order in the third inning, Morgan Sampson led off with a walk in the fourth, but also stranded on first base.
Trailing 4-0, DSS cut the deficit in half in the bottom of the fifth inning.
With one out, Denice van Dijk doubled to end the No-Hitter of Ginger de Weert, then Melissa de Greef walked.
The bases got loaded when Noa Brand singled, which brought in Leonella Elizabeth in as new pitcher.
She saw a run being scored on a passed ball, then walked Areke Spel, which re-loaded the bases.
With two outs, DSS made it a 4-2 scored when De Greef scored on a wild pitch.
Brand also tried to score on a new wild pitch, but was eliminated at the plate to end the inning.
Sparks Haarlem added an insurance run in the top of the seventh.
Lead-off hitter Karin Tuk reached second base on an error, then Virginie Anneveld walked.
The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Kingsley Avery and Tuk scored on a fielder's choice-grounder by Kehli Washington.
In the bottom of the seventh, DSS managed to score another run to narrow the deficit to 5-3.
Denice van Dijk led off with a single.
After Leonella Elizabeth struckout the next two batters, she gave up an RBI-double to Areke Spel, but then closed the game with her sixth strikeout in 2 2/3 inning.

DSS vs. Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem (game two)
In the second game, Sparks Haarlem reached base only four times.
The team got into scoring position only twice off of Dagmar Bloeming, who went the distance for DSS, struckout eight batters and gave up only three basehits.
DSS scored the lone run in this game in the third inning off of Leonella Elizabeth, who took over from starter Rebecca Soumeru in the second inning.
In this at bat, DSS recorded three of its six hits in this game.
Lorraine Kieft led off with a single, then the bases got loaded with one out when Noa Brand also singled and Areke Spel walked.
Sophie Bugter followed with another single to bring in Kieft and put DSS ahead, 1-0.
The other three runners were left behind when Elizabeth struckout the next two batters.
But the run would be decisive.
DSS got into scoring position three more times in this game, but all of them didn't get beyond second base.
In the first inning, Areke Spel walked with one out and stole second base, but stranded there.
In the fifth, Noa Brand singled with one out and stole second.
Next batter Areke Spel also singled, but Brand was eliminated trying to advance to third base.
Spel moved to second base, but then was left behind.
In the sixth, Lisa Waasdorp led off with a single, advanced on a sacrifice bunt and was the final runner that was left behind on second base.
Winning pitcher Dagmar Bloeming threw a fine game and gave up only three basehits.
She allowed only two runners to reach second base.
The first of them did so in the first inning.
With one out, Jenny Kinburn reached on a bunt-single and moved on a grounder, but Bloeming closed with a strikeout.
In the fourth, with two outs, Kingsley Avery reached second base on a throwing error, but also stranded there.
After giving up the single in the first inning, Dagmar Bloeming also gave up singles in the second and third inning.
In the second, Tammie Lijbers singled with two outs, as did Jenny Kinburn in the third.
The righthander, who struckout eight, retired the final ten batters she faced.
