Sparks Haarlem one-runs Terrasvogels in make-up game
Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - While some rain was initially predicted for Thursday (August 10), the second attempt to play the make-up game this week between Terrasvogels and Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem was successful. After a rainout on Tuesday, the game was played in the evening and Sparks Haarlem won only 1-0.

With the win, Sparks Haarlem got a step closer to becoming the second team that secures a spot in the Play-Offs. Theoretically, fifth-placed Tex Town Tigers still can end up in a tie for fourth place with Sparks Haarlem. For that to happen, TTT has to win all is remaining six game, while Sparks Haarlem has to lose all its remaining four games. In case TTT and Sparks Haarlem end up in a tie, their head-to-head results will be the tie-breaker. However, that is 3-3, meaning the Team Quality Balance then will be decisive, which is slightly in favor of Tex Town Tigers.

Both Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels can qualify for the Play-Offs in the upcoming weekend. Sparks Haarlem then meets DSS, while Terrasvogels plays against Tex Town Tigers.

The game was the opening game from an initial double-header that was on the original schedule to be played on a Saturday in August. Due to the upcoming European Cup Tournaments, the double-header was re-scheduled as a split double-header on Tuesday, June 6 and Thursday, June 8.

On the first date, the game went underway under very clouded conditions and was interrupted four times due to lightning and rain. In the bottom of the fifth inning, with Sparks Haarlem leading 1-0 and no outs, the game was halted definitively due to heavy rain. With that, it became no official game and had to be replayed in its entirety. The game was then initially re-scheduled for Saturday, June 17, but shortly thereafter, it was moved to Tuesday-evening.

On June 8, the second game was played as scheduled and won by Sparks Haarlem with a 3-1 score.

Complete Schedule

Tonight's game was a pitching-duel between Micaela Whitney (Terrasvogels) and Rebecca Soumeru (Sparks Haarlem). Whitney went the distance, struckout seven batters and gave up only three basehits. Soumeru gave up only one basehit in the 5 1/3 inning she threw, striking out five batters.

The team of Sparks Haarlem was expanded again tonight with the addition of pitcher Monica Perry and outfielder Chantal Versluis, who played in the Italian Softball League this season. Perry didn't play tonight, but Versluis got a pinch-hit appearance in the seventh and then walked.

Sparks Haarlem got close to opening the score in the top of the first inning, as it got the bases loaded with two outs. Kehli Washington led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Maaike Blaauwgeers. After a strikeout accounted for the second out, Karin Tuk reached on a throwing error, then Virginie Anneveld walked to load the bases. The three runners were left behind when Kingsley Avery grounded out.

Sparks Haarlem scored what would be the lone run in the game in the second at bat. Onaisha Franka led off with a walk, then stole second base during a strikeout and moments later, she also stole third base. Franka then scored when Desiree Adriaansz hit a difficult, bad-hop, infield-hit down the third base-line jumped up in front of short stop Lizzie Clarijs. It was then impossible to eliminate either the batter or the runner and so, Adriaansz reached first base safely with an infield-hit, while Franka scored.

In the remainder of the game, Sparks Haarlem got into scoring position only two more times, in the sixth and seventh inning.

In the third, Karin Tuk reached on a single, but a double play followed. In the fourth, Onaisha Franka reached on an error with one out, but Tammie Lijbers then lined out to pitcher Micaela Whitney, who made a double play.

In the sixth, Kingsley Avery walked with two outs and stole second base, but Whitley closed with a strikeout. And in the seventh, Kehli Washington reached on a fielder's choice and stole second base, but also stranded when Whitney again closed with a strikeout.

With her seven strikeouts tonight, Micaela Whitney became the fourth pitcher this season with 100+ strikeouts and moved into third place with 104. This category is led by Dagmar Bloeming (DSS), who struckout 122 batters. Lindsey Meadows (Tex Town Tigers) is in second place with 107, Mikayla Endicott (Roef!) is fourth with 103 strikeouts.

Veteran righthander Rebecca Soumeru threw four hitless innings and raised her record to 9-2. She walked Gabi Obia with two outs in the second inning, but then closed with a strikeout. In the fourth, Soumeru hit lead-off hitter Lizzie Clarijs with a pitch. She got into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt by Ella Krommendijk, but stranded on second base.

Terrasvogels got into scoring position only twice tonight. The second time was in the fifth inning when Sanne Korpel drove the ball into right-centerfield for a double that broke Soumeru's No-Hitter. She also was left behind on second base.

When Soumeru walked Lizzie Clarijs with one out in the sixth inning, she was relieved by Ginger de Weert, who struckout the next two batters. In the seventh, De Weert gave up an one-out single to Gabi Obia, but then retired the next two batters. With that, she earned her first save of the season.
