Orange Under-16 wins twice on European Championship
Nederlands

OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) - The Netherlands Under-16 Softball Team has won its first two games of the European Championship to advance to the Second Round.

On Monday (July 10), the Orange-squad won 9-6 against reigning champion Italy. On a rainy Tuesday, the team won 11-1 vs. Belgium to become the winner of Pool B.

Twelve countries are participating in the ninth edition of what was the European Cadets Championship in the past, but has become the Championship for 16 years and younger. The twelve teams are divided into four pools of three teams each. The two best teams advance to the next round, which has two 4-teams pools. The top-3 of these pools move on to the Play-Off Round, which has six teams. The top-4 of that round will meet in the Semi-Finals.

The Netherlands is participating for the sixth time in the event, which was first organized in 2002 in Collecchio (Italy). The Netherlands won the title twice, in 2007 in Pilsen (Czech Republic) and in 2011 in Deurne (Belgium).

Two years ago, when the Championship was held in Nuoro on Sardinia (Italy), the Netherlands didn't participate. Italy then captured the title, winning the Final against the Czech Republic.

Netherlands vs. Italy

Italy opened the event with a 12-0 win against Belgium and led 4-2 against the Netherlands after four innings. However, the Orange squad then rallied for seven runs in the top of the fifth inning to turn the game its way and win 9-6.

The Netherlands opened the score with one run in the first inning. Bobbi Scheurkogel led off with a walk, stole second base and scored on an one-out single by Sophie Verdaasdonk.

Italy answered with two runs in the second inning, but the Orange came alongside in the third at bat and it was again Bobbi Scheurkogel who scored. She led off with a double, moved on a grounder by Sterre den Duijn and scored on a triple by Sophie Verdaasdonk. She was later eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder by Marijn Crouwel, who herself stranded on third base.

Italy again scored twice in its third inning to take a 4-2 lead, but then the Dutch team struck in the fifth with seven runs. There were only four hits in the rally, but the Italian defense contributed with four errors. Again, it was Bobbi Scheurkogel who reached base first. She led off off with a single, then advanced on two following outfield-errors and scored on a wild pitch. Hereafter, Sterre den Duijn and Sophie Verdaasdonk walked and Marijn Crouwel followed with an RBI-double. After a pitching change, the next run was scored on a grounder by Lieke Suskind, then an error on a fly by Tess Remmers led to another run. Singles by Kelly Bezems and Jacky Huijben produced the fifth run in the at bat. A wild pitch and a throwing error contributed to two more runs and lifted the lead to 9-4 in favor of the Netherlands.

Italy managed to score two more runs in the sixth, but was unable to turn the game around again.

Netherlands vs. Belgium

In the early morning-game (starting at 9 AM) against Belgium on Tuesday, the Netherlands briefly trailed, but then rallied after a long rain-delay and ended the game via the mercy-rule, winning 11-1.

In the top of the first inning, Belgium opened the score on a single by Lynn Van Den Brande, but left three runners behind. This was to be the lone Belgian run.

In the bottom of the first inning, the Netherlands reacted with four runs on three hits. The team got the bases loaded quickly. Bobbi Scheurkogel led off with a single, stole second base and reached third base on a wild pitch. The bases then loaded when Sterre den Duijn walked and Sophie Verdaasdonk was hit by a pitch. Hereafter, the game was interrupted by rain and a long delay followed. The game resumed after a delay of two hours and 42 minutes! When the teams took the field again, Lisa Meyering delivered a 2-run single. Esmee Toet followed with a runscoring single and later another run was added when Lieke Suskind walked with one out. The team also left three runners behind.

A homerun by Sophie Verdaasdonk lifted the lead to 5-1 in the second inning.

A 5-run rally followed in the third at bat, thanks to runscoring singles by Bobbi Scheurkogel and Sophie Verdaasdonk, an RBI-grounder by Esmee Toet and a 2-run double by Melissa Hoeverts.

Leading 10-1, the 10-run difference was reached in the bottom of the fifth inning. Noa Fehling led off with a double, moved on a wild pitch and scored on an one-out walk-off single by Bobbi Scheurkogel that ended the game.

The Orange-squad collected 11 basehits in this game, including three by Bobbi Scheurkogel, who scored twice and also batted in two runs. Sophie Verdaasdonk scored three Dutch runs.
