Terrasvogels in Play-Offs; wins twice against Tex Town Tigers
Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - Terrasvogels won twice against Tex Town Tigers on Saturday (August 12) to qualify for this years Play-Offs. Terrasvogels played a mercy-rule and an extra-inning game to come to its victories. In the opener, the home team won 9-0 in 4½ inning and in the second game, Terrasvogels won 5-4 in eight innings.

Today's games were important for both teams. By winning the first game, Terrasvogels again secured itself of a spot in the Play-Offs. For Tex Town Tigers, wins are much-needed to avoid finishing in sixth place, but also to remain in the race for the Play-Offs. Before today, it still had a chance of finishing in a tie for fifth place with Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem, which would in favor of the Enschede-team. However, Sparks Haarlem today won twice to also reach the Play-Offs again, meaning the theoretical scenario for the tie had vaporized.

Both Tex Town Tigers and Terrasvogels were eliminated for second place because of the double win by Sparks Haarlem. TTT after the first win of Sparks Haarlem, Terrasvogels after the second win. Terrasvogels can stil end up in a tie for second place. The head-to-head results between Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels is 3-3. However, the Team Quality Balance is in favor of Sparks Haarlem. By finishing in second place, Sparks Haarlem will be the host of the first day of the Play-Off Weekend, which is Saturday, September 16.

Tex Town Tigers has four games remaining and still can end up in fourth place. That is now occupied by Roef!, which today lost twice to league-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem. On Sunday, TTT plays against the winless Talent Team Holland. When TTT records two victories, it will set up an all-deciding final series against Roef! on Saturday, September 2, the final day of the regular season. On the other hand, in cases TTT loses twice to Roef!, it also could end up in a tie with DSS, which probably means they will have to play an one-game play-off to decide fifth and sixth place. To realize that, DSS has to win all four remaining games in the final weekend. The team that finishes in sixth place has to play in the Promotion/Relegation Play-Offs.

After this weekend, the season will be interrupted (again) for the upcoming European Cup Tournaments. Terrasvogels and Dutch champion Sparks Haarlem will participate in the European Premiere Cup in Haarlem (Netherlands). League-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem and DSS wil travel to Italy for the Cup Winners Cup, which will be played in Caserta. Both events will open on Monday, August 21 and close on Saturday, August 26. Last year, Sparks Haarlem and Olympia Haarlem won the Premiere Cup and Cup Winners Cup, respectively.

For Terrasvogels, it will mark the 36th time that it will participate in an European Cup Tournament, since the first one was organized in 1978. With this, Terrasvogels extends its record again, being the most successful European club.

Terrasvogels vs. Tex Town Tigers (game two)
Tex Town Tigers took an early 1-0 lead in the top of the first inning off of Micaela Whitney, who made her second start of the day. Terrasvogels turned the game its way in the third inning and led 2-1 when the seventh inning began. TTT then came alongside to force extra innings and took a 4-2 lead in the eighth. Terrasvogels answered with a 3-run rally to win 5-4.

With one out in the top of the first inning, Jasmine Peters reached on a bunt-single for Tex Town Tigers. The Australian player then scored when Laura Wissink doubled with two outs. Hereafter, the Enschede-team got the bases loaded when Lindsey Meadows was hit by a pitch and Anna-Bè Bartels walked. The three runners were left behind when a flyout ended the at bat.

Terrasvogels left a runner in scoring position in the second inning off of Lindsey Meadows, who went the distance for TTT. Rhowan Stuart led off with a double, but Meadows retired the next three batters.

After Whitney had retired the side in the second inning, Femke Duffhues took over the pitching for Terrasvogels in the third. With one out, she walked Annemiek Jansen, then gave up a single to Laura Wissink. Jansen tried to advance to third base, but was eliminated there. Next batter Lindsey Meadows then walked, but TTT left two runners behind.

Before the bottom of the third inning could get underway, the game was halted due to rain. When the rain had stopped and maintenance had done to the playing field, the game resumed after a 47-minute delay. Katharina Szalay then doubled with one out and scored the tying run on a following triple by Lizzie Clarijs. She then scored the go-ahead run on a grounder by Jessica Waasdorp.

In the next three innings, neither team got into scoring position. Lindsey Meadows retired all nine batters, while Femke Duffhues gave up two singles, but also was supported with a double play.

Leading 2-1 when the top of the seventh inning began, Terrasvogels was three outs away from the win, but Tex Town Tigers came alongside. Pinch-hitter Olivia Hornstein led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Kimberley Zender. With a runner on second base, Micaela Whitney re-entered as pitcher. She saw Zender move to third base on a grounder by Nadine Marinus, then gave up a single to Jasmine Peters, which made it a 2-2 score. A strikeout ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Rhowan Stuart led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Sanne Korpel. Pinch-hitter Kimberly Jones then was hit by a pitch, but two runners were left behind and so, the game went into extra innings.

Tex Town Tigers took the lead for the second time today by scoring two runs in the top of the eighth inning. With Annemiek Jansen on second base as tie-break runner, Laura Wissink was hit by a pitch. The two runners advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Lindsey Meadows. With first base open, a force play is mostly created in these tie-break situations by walking the next batter intentionally, but Terrasvogels Head Coach Nick Braakman didn't opt for this. Next batter Anna-Bè Bartels delivered a runscoring single and Aafje van Baal followed with a sacrifice fly to give TTT a 4-2 lead.

In the bottom of the eighth inning, Terrasvogels answered with three runs to leave the field victorious. Tie-break runner Dervisa Mutic scored on a single by Katharina Szalay, then Lizzie Clarijs also singled. The two runners moved to second and third base on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Waasdorp. With first base open, TTT's Head Coach Jaap Braakman (the father of the Terrasvogels Head Coach) also didn't opt for an intentional walk in this situation. The bases did get loaded when Ella Krommendijk received a 'regular' walk. A strikeout then accounted for the second out, but hereafter, Sanne Korpel singled to bring in the tying run. With the bases still loaded, Kimberly Jones connected for a walk-off single to end the game and make it 5-4 in favor of Terrasvogels.
