Haarlem Awards for Dinet Oosting and Olympia Haarlem

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Dinet Oosting has been voted Female Athlete of the Year and her team FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem won the title of Team of the Year on Tuesday-evening (December 12) during the annual Topsportgala to honor the best athletes in the Haarlem-area. The Gala was organized by SportSupport in cooperation with the Municipality of Haarlem and was held in the Gravenzaal in the City Hall of Haarlem.

Olympia Haarlem's Head Coach Stanley Doney was nominated for Coach of the Year, while baseball-player Nolan Beugeling was nominated for Talent of the Year Boys. But these Awards went to someone wlse.

This season, Olympia Haarlem captured the European Cup Winners Cup (second in a row), then also won the Dutch Championship-title by winning the best-of-three Final against reigning champion Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem. This was the third season that the team was led by New Zealander Stanley Doney. Dinet Oosting was a leading player of the team, who last month was named Most Valuable Player of the Golden League.

Olympia Haarlem led the Golden League the entire season and closed with a 30-4 record in first place. In the following Play-Offs, the team remained unbeaten, won three games and reached the Holland Series. In the weekend of September 23-24, at Moergestel, Olympia Haarlem swept Sparks Haarlem, winning 5-0 and 2-0 to capture its first Championship-title. The club's predecessor DSC '74 won the title in 2003.

Dinet Oosting was named Most Valuable Player of the Golden League for the second consecutive year on October 28. She led the Golden League in several offensive categories, including batting average (.536), slugging average (.821), on-base percentage (.613), runs scored (40), basehits (45), runs batted in (37), total bases (69), walks (19) and stolen bases (21). The catcher als led her team in doubles (9) and homeruns (3). Defensively, Dinet Oosting made only four errors in 162 chances, which gave her a .975 fielding average. She also was a member of the Netherlands National Team, which on July 1 captured the title at the European Championship in Bollate (Italy).

Besides Dinet Oosting, also nominated for Female Athlete of the Year were Kim Polling (judo) and Naomi Schotvanger (swimming). Olympia Haarlem was nominated for Team of the Year with Kenamju Women (judo) and Kennemer Combinatie (chess). The Award, named after sporting pioneer Pim Mulier, for Team of the Year was handed out by former pitcher David Bergman, who played in the big league for Hoofddorp Pioniers and Kinheim and had been a member of the Netherlands National Baseball Team.

The Award for Coach of the Year went to Melissa Nazar (trampoline). Also nominated besides Stanley Doney was René Oerlemans (karate).

In the category Sport Talent of the Year Boys, Ties van der Lecq (badminton) won. Nolan Beugeling (baseball) was also nominated, as was Olivier de Jong (fencing).

Other winners were Frank de Wit (judo, Male Athlete of the Year), Debora Jille (badminton, Talent of the Year Girls), Brian Burggraaf (cycling, Master of the Year) and Jan Assendelft (Volunteer of the Year).

There were eight categories at the Topsportgala which each had three nominees. The nominations were made by a jury, who also decided the winner in each category.
