Two wins and a loss for Orange Under-16 on European Championship
Nederlands

OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) - The Netherlands Under-16 Softball Team added two more victories on Thursday (July 13), but also suffered its first loss of the event.

First, the Orange-squad closed the Second Round with an 11-6 win against Russia. Later in the day, the team had to play two consecutive games in the Play-Off Round. The team opened with a big 19-0 win against Great Britain, but then lost 2-0 against the Czech Republic.

The Netherlands closes the Play-Offs on Friday against Italy. The result of that game will set up the Semi-Finals that will be played in the evening.

(July 13)

Netherlands vs. Russia

The Netherlands scored four runs in the first inning, which formed the basis for the win. In the opening at bat, the first run was scored on a single by Sophie Verdaasdonk, then the next run was added when Marijn Crouwel also delivered a runscoring single. Moments later, Esmee Toet doubled to bring in two more runs and make it a 4-0 score.

Russia got one run back in the top of the second inning, but the Orange answered with a 6-run rally to decide the game. The bases got loaded when Tess Remmers led off with a single, Kelly Bezems walked and Bobbi Scheurkogel reached on a fielder's choice. All three then scored when Sterre den Duijn connected for a baseclearing 3-run double. Later in the at bat, Esmee Toet singled in a run and two more runs were added on an error.

In the third, Sophie Verdaasdonk added a runscoring double to increase the lead to 11-2.

In the top of the fourth inning, Russia was productive and scored four runs on three hits.

In the bottom of the fourth, Esmee Toet led off with a single and Melissa Hoeverts also singled. However, with these two on the bases, the game was ended due to the time-rule of 90 minutes which was installed after the re-scheduling of games due to the rain earlier this week.

Sophie Verdaasdonk and Esmee Toet both had three basehits.

Netherlands vs. Czech Republic

The Netherlands closed the day with a 2-0 loss against the Czech Republic.

The Orange-squad collected only four basehits in this game, but was unable to score, despite getting several baserunners.

The team was retired in order in the first inning and left a runner behind on first base in the second at bat. But in the third inning, there was a scoring opportunity. With one out, Noortje Bisschop walked and moved to third base when an error was made on a sacrifice bunt by Jacky Huijben. After the latter had stolen second base, Bisschop was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a bunt by Sterre den Duijn. A grounder ended the at bat.

After another Dutch runner stranded on first base in the top of the fourth inning, then Czechs scored in the bottom of the at bat. The first two batters singled, then scored when the next two batters also delivered singles to make it a 2-0 score.

In the top of the fifth inning, Noortje Bisschop walked with one out, but then was caught stealing moments later. Hereafter, Jacky Huijben and Sterre den Duijn both singled, but were left behind.

In the sixth, the Netherlands got its final runner. Marijn Crouwel led off with a single, but a double play and strikeout then ended the inning and the game.
