HAARLEM (Neth.) - League-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem and Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem split their double-header on Saturday (July 15), as the season resumed in the Golden League.

The season was interrupted after games played on June 17 and 18 for the European Championship in Bollate (Italy). That event ended on Saturday, July 1 with the Netherlands Softball Team capturing the title by winning the Final against Italy with a 7-1 score. There also were no games scheduled in the highest league in the weekend of July 8 and 9.

In today's opener, Sparks Haarlem won 7-1 vs. Olympia Haarlem to hand the league-leader only its second loss of the season. Olympia Haarlem lost its first game on May 27 against Tex Town Tigers. Leading 2-1, Sparks Haarlem rallied for four runs in the fifth inning and went on to win 7-1.

In the second game, Sparks Haarlem rallied for six runs in the first inning, highlighted by a grand slam homerun by Tammie Lijbers. Sparks Haarlem led 7-0 after two innings. The team then was held scoreless in the remainder of the game and ended up empty-handed, as Olympia Haarlem went on to win 9-7 in eight innings. Trailing 7-5, Olympia Haarlem came alongside in the seventh to force extra innings. Olympia outhit Sparks 16-5, including three basehits by Dinet Oosting, Jessie van Aalst and Emma Wójcik.

In the upcoming two weeks, Sparks Haarlem again has no games scheduled, as it will miss two players, who will participate with the Netherlands Junior Team in the World Championship in Florida (USA). Sparks Haarlem will play its next games on August 5.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game one)
In its first game since June 18, Sparks Haarlem handed league-leader Olympia Haarlem only its second loss of the season by winning 7-1. The team led only 2-1 after four innings, but then rallied for four runs in the fifth to decide the game.

Sparks Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the first at bat off of Ilona Andringa, who was 8-0 before today and suffered her first loss of the season since returning from her college-season in the USA. With one out, Anne Blaauwgeers walked, then scored when Maxime van Dalen followed with a triple. Moments later, Van Dalen scored the next run on a single by Virginie Anneveld.

In the next two innings, Andringa retired the side, while her teammates got into scoring position. In the second inning, Brenda Beers led off with a single for Olympia and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Shareday Christina, but stranded. In the third, with two outs, Dinet Oosting walked and stole second base. She then tried to advance on a wild pitch, but was eliminated at third base.

Olympia Haarlem got one run back in the top of the fourth inning off of starter Rebecca Soumeru. With one out, Mariëlle Vleugels tripled and scored on a single by Brenda Beers, but that was to be the lone run for the team.

In the bottom of the fourth, Sparks Haarlem got a chance to take some more distance, but left three runners behind. Maxime van Dalen led off with a walk and moved on an one-out single by Jenny Kinburn. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt, but with first base open, powerhitter Karin Tuk of course was walked intentionally. Hereafter, Ilona Andringa closed with a strikeout.

The home team then decided the game with a 4-run rally with two outs in the fifth at bat. Desiree Adriaansz led off with a walk and Kehli Washington reached on a bunt-single. After the two had moved on a sacrifice bunt, the bases got loaded when Maxime van Dalen walked. With two outs, the bases were cleared when Jenny Kinburn connected for a 3-run double. Shortly thereafter, she also scored herself when Maaike Blaauwgeers reached on an error.

With a 6-1 lead, Ginger de Weert took over the pitching for Sparks Haarlem in the top of the sixth inning. She got runners on second and third base quickly, but avoided giving up runs. The righthander walked Dinet Oosting and Jessie van Aalst, who then both moved on a wild pitch. After a flyout, Oosting was eliminated trying to score on a wild pitch. In that situation, Van Aalst moved to third base, but stranded there, as De Weert closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the sixth, Sparks Haarlem added another run. Onaisha Franka led off with a single, advanced on an error and scored on a 2-out single by Maxime van Dalen to make it a 7-1 score.

In the top of the seventh, De Weert retired the side to close the game.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game two)
Olympia Haarlem trailed 6-0 after the first inning, but not only avoided a mercy-rule loss, it also came back, turned the game its way and won 9-7 in eight innings.

In the top of the first inning, Olympia Haarlem left runners behind on second and third base. After completion of the bottom of the first inning, the league-leader faced a 6-0 deficit.

With one out, Olympia-starter Mariëlle Vleugels hit Anne Blaauwgeers with a pitch. After she had stolen second base, she advanced on a wild pitch, then Maxime van Dalen walked and reached second base on a fielder's choice. Then, the scoring began, as Virginie Anneveld opened the rally with a runscoring single. Jenny Kinburn followed with an RBI-single to double the lead. With two outs, the bases got loaded when Karin Tuk walked. That brought Tammie Lijbers in the batter's box and she connected well on an 0-1 pitch. She drove the ball over the centerfield-fence for a grand slam homerun, which was the first homerun in her big league-career! And so, Sparks Haarlem was having an early and comfortable 6-0 lead. This was the third grand slam homerun this season in the Golden League. Jessica Waasdorp (Terrasvogels) and Mariëlle Vleugels (Olympia Haarlem) hit the other grand slams on May 14 and May 25 respectively.

In the second inning, Sparks Haarlem reached the mercy-rule, 7-run difference, thanks to another runscoring single by Jenny Kinburn.

However, the game didn't end via the mercy-rule, it even needed an extra inning and it was Sparks Haarlem that was left empty-handed.

The home team was held scoreless in the remainder of the game, while Olympia Haarlem started to come back from the third inning on. Sparks Haarlem not only was held scoreless from the third inning on, it was even held off the bases, except for the tie-break runner in the eighth inning!

In the top of the third inning, Olympia scored three runs off of starter Leonella Elizabeth. Stephanie Pearce led off with a double, moved on a wild pitch, but then was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a grounder by Eva Voortman to short. After Voortman had stolen second base, Dinet Oosting walked and Jessie van Aalst followed with a runscoring double. Hereafter, Oosting was eliminated in a rundown trying to score on a grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels. The bases got loaded when Brenda Beers singled and two runs were added when Emma Wójcik also singled to make it a 7-3 score.

Today, Eva Voortman played in her first regular season-games since May 13. She had been sidelined with a foot-injury she sustained in a domestic accident. Initially, she appeared to miss only a few games, but later even needed surgery. However, she appeared to have recovered in time to participate with the Netherlands Softball Team in the European Championship in Italy at the end of June. But a few days before the start of the event, she was cut from the roster.

In the fourth, Olympia narrowed the deficit to 7-5. With one out, Voortman tripled and scored on a following double by Oosting, who then scored the next run on a single by Van Aalst. But Olympia also left two runners behind.

After leaving two more runners in the sixth inning, Olympia came alongside in the top of the seventh. Brenda Beers led off with a single and scored on a double by Emma Wójcik, which led to a pitching change. Rebecca Soumeru (who had taken over in the third) was relieved by Ginger de Weert. With one out, she saw Wójcik move to third base on a sacrifice bunt and then gave up a runscoring single to Stephanie Pearce that made it a 7-7 score!

Olympia then decided the game in the top of the eighth. Tie-break runner Eva Voortman scored on a single by Dinet Oosting, who went on to score herself on a grounder by Jessie van Aalst.

In the bottom of the eighth, tie-break runner Desiree Adriaansz became the first and only baserunner for Sparks Haarlem since the second inning! With a 9-7 lead, Ilona Andringa took over the Olympia-pitching and struckout the first two batters she faced. A grounder then ended the game to complete the come-from-behind-victory.

Olympia collected 16 basehits in this game, including three by Dinet Oosting, Jessie van Aalst (two doubles) and Emma Wójcik. Eva Voortman scored three runs, while Van Aalst and Wójcik batted in three.
