Sparks Haarlem records two shutouts against Talent Team
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem shutout the Talent Team Holland twice on Sunday (June 18), winning 12-0 and 3-0.

Initially, Sparks Haarlem also had a game scheduled for Saturday-afternoon, which was a make-up game against Terrasvogels. That game was halted in the fifth inning by heavy rain on June 6 and has to be replayed in its entirety. However, that game was moved to a new date and is now scheduled for Tuesday, August 8.

After today's games, the season will be interrupted, as the Netherlands National Softball Team travels to Italy on Monday (June 19) for participation in the European Championship in Bollate. The tournament opens on Sunday, June 25. In the preliminary round, the Orange squad plays in Pool B and meets Greece, Lithuania, Slovakia, Germany and Ireland.

The regular in the Golden League resumes again on Saturday, July 15.

Coming weekend, the second half in the Silver League begins. A week ago, the final decisions were made to determine the top-6 teams that will play in the Promotion Pool. The bottom-5 teams will play in the Relegation Pool. De Glaskoning Twins, Birds, Hoofddorp Pioniers, Amsterdam Pirates, Euro Stars and Onze Gezellen qualified for the top-6. After the final games were played on Saturday (June 17), Onze Gezellen ended up in a tie for sixth place with Neptunus and Centrals. However, a week ago Onze Gezellen already secured a spot in the top-6 by winning its second game of a double-header against Amsterdam Pirates. Whatever happened yesterday and with whomever Onze Gezellen would end up in a tie, it all would be in favor of the Haarlem-based squad.

In today's opener, Sparks Haarlem collected nine basehits, while the Talent Team registered only one. Karin Tuk went 3-for-3, two doubles and a homerun, scored three runs and also batted in three.

In the second game, Sparks Haarlem hit only six basehits, but one of them again was a homerun by Karin Tuk. Virginie Anneveld was 2-for-3.

Talent Team Holland vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game one)
In the opener, Sparks Haarlem decided the game with a long first at bat, scoring eight runs on only four basehits, including a baseclearing triple. There also were three walks, two hit batters and two wild pitches, which led to multiple baserunners and contributed to the runs.

Kehli Washington opened the inning with a walk, then stole second base. Hereafter, Anne Blaauwgeers also walked and when starting pitcher Roos-Marijn Kramer enabled both runners to advance on a wild pitch, she was replaced by Nicole van Eijl. Washington then scored the first run on a passed ball and Maxime van Dalen walked. Karin Tuk followed with an RBI-double and Virginie Anneveld added a runscoring single. With one out, the bases got loaded when Kingsley Avery was hit by a pitch. Onaisha Franka then delivered a runscoring single and with two outs, the next run was scored on a wild pitch. The bases got loaded again when Kehli Washington was hit by a pitch in her second at bat in the inning. The bases were then cleared when Anne Blaauwgeers connected for a 3-run triple to lift the lead to 8-0.

Sparks Haarlem added two runs in the second inning. Karin Tuk led off with a double, then moved to third base on an one-out double by Tammie Lijbers. Both scored when Kingsley Avery followed with a triple.

In the bottom of the third inning, Sparks Haarlem again scored twice. With one out, Maxime van Dalen singled and then Karin Tuk connected for her fourth homerun of the season. Ten days ago, she became the first player in history to reach the 50-homerun mark in her career.

Leonella Elizabeth went the distance for Sparks Haarlem in this mercy-rule game. The righthander gave up only one basehit (on a bunt), which was hit by Yindi Beekveldt with one out in the first inning. Hereafter, Sparks Haarlem turned a double play.

Elizabeth struckout the side in the second inning, then saw a runner reach third base in the third at bat. Lisa de Vries led off with a walk, stole second base, moved to third with one out on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa Hop, but then was left behind. Elizabeth then retired the side again in the top of the fourth to end the game.

Talent Team Holland vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (game two)
The second game was much closer than the first one and probably was one of the best played this season by the Talent Team. Sparks Haarlem scored its first run in the third inning, but didn't decide the game before the sixth when two runs were added thanks to another homerun by Karin Tuk.

In this game, Chantal Versluis played in her first game of the season for Sparks Haarlem. This year, she plays in her second season in the highest Italian softball-league, but today, she was back in Haarlem and played in leftfield.

Talent-starter Lisa Hop threw four solid innings, striking out three batters and giving up only two basehits. The righthander retired the first six batters she faced and struckout two of them.

In the bottom of the third inning, she gave up the first run. Kingsley Avery led off with a walk and stole second base, then moved to third on a grounder by Jenny Kinburn. With two outs, Avery scored on a bunt-single by Kehli Washington.

Ginger de Weert went the distance for Sparks Haarlem, struckout nine batters, gave up only two hits and retired the first eight batters. With two outs in the third inning, Rose Mwaro recorded the first Talent-hit and was able to reach third base when an outfield-error followed. With that, the Talent Team was close to opening the score, but Mwaro was left behind on third base when a flyout ended the at bat.

Sparks Haarlem got into scoring position again in the fifth off of new pitcher Kim Horsten. With one out, Jenny Kinburn singled and moved on a grounder, but stranded on second base.

The home team then added two much-needed runs in the sixth off of Daniëlle ten Donkelaar. With one out, Maxime van Dalen singled, then Karin Tuk connected for her league-leading fifth homerun of the season and the 52nd in her career.

Ginger de Weert retired the side in the last three innings, striking out six batters. She struckout the side in the sixth and closed the game with two strikeouts in the seventh.
