Olympia Haarlem splits with DSS, but becomes regular season-winner
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - League-leader FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem split its double-header on Saturday (July 22) with DSS. The team lost the opener 9-2 in five innings, then won the second game, 1-0.

Despite the double-header split, Olympia Haarlem became the winner of the regular season, as Terrasvogels today lost both games of its double-header against Roef!. With that, Terrasvogels became the last team to be eliminated for first place.

By finishing in first place, Olympia Haarlem not only will be the host of the decisive second day of the Play-Offs, it also secured that it will participate in an European Cup-tournament next year. The team that finishes in second place will be the host of the first day of the Play-Offs, which follow the regular season and will be played in September.

In the opener, DSS scored eight runs in the first two at bats on eight basehits, including a homerun by Denice van Dijk. Morgan Sampson had a major contribution in the win, as she was 3-for-3 with a double, scored twice and batted in three runs, making her accountable for five of the nine runs. Van Dijk batted in three runs.

In the second inning, Olympia Haarlem collected only four basehits and scored the lone run in the first inning.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. DSS (game one)
DSS immediately struck with three runs in the top of the first inning off of Eva Voortman. The lefthander pitched in her first game since May 13, as she had been sidelined for several weeks with a foot-injury, which happened during a domestic accident. She played in her first games again since then a week ago, but then didn't pitch.

In the first inning, Noa Brand led off with a double and moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Areke Spel. With two outs, Morgan Sampson singled to bring in Brand, then scored herself when Denice van Dijk followed with a homerun. A week ago, she also homered against Terrasvogels. The homerun was the first Voortman gave up this season.

In the bottom of the first inning, DSS-starter Quincey Catsburg gave up a 2-out double to Jessie van Aalst, but she was left behind.

DSS then rallied for five runs in the second inning to take a commanding 8-0 lead. With one out, Eva Voortman hit next batters Annemiek de Rover and Stephanie Ruiter with a pitch. The two moved on a passed ball, then Noa Brand followed with a runscoring single. With runners at the corners, Brand stole second base and when that was followed by a throwing error, Ruiter scored the next run. With Brand on third base, Areke Spel walked and stole second base. Three more runs were then added when Sophie Bugter hit a sacrifice fly, Morgan Sampson followed with an RBI-double and Denice van Dijk connected for a runscoring single.

Olympia Haarlem got one run back in the bottom of the second inning. Brenda Beers led off with a single, stole second base, advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Tomoko Goda.

In the third, Jessie van Aalst tripled for Olympia with two outs, but again was left behind.

DSS added another run in the fourth. With two outs, Sophie Bugter singled and stole second base, then scored on the third basehit in the game by Morgan Sampson. That lifted the lead to 9-1. The nine runs, which were all earned, are the most runs Eva Voortman gave up since May 18, 2014 when she gave up 11 against Sparks Haarlem. That also was the last game in which the lefthander gave up nine earned runs.

In the bottom of the fourth, Olympia scored its second run. Brenda Beers led off with a triple, then scored on an one-out grounder by Tomoko Goda to make it a 9-2 score. But Olympia was unable to erase the mercy-rule run-difference and lost the game in five innings.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. DSS (game two)
The second game was more or less a pitching-duel between Ilona Andringa (Olympia Haarlem) and Dagmar Bloeming (DSS), despite the fact that both got several runners in scoring position. It was Bloeming who had the better stats, as she struckout seven batters and gave up only four hits, while Andringa struckout only three and gave up eight basehits. Nevertheless, it was Bloeming who gave up the lone run in the game.

DSS got into scoring position in the top of the first inning when Noa Brand led off with a walk and stole second, but then was left behind.

Olympia Haarlem then scored what would be the lone run in the game in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Shareday Christina tripled and scored on a sacrifice fly by Jessie van Aalst. In the next three innings, Olympia was retired in order by Dagmar Bloeming.

The home team got into scoring position again in the fifth. Eva Voortman then led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, she tried to advance to third base on a single into short centerfield by Emma Wójcik, but was eliminated there on a throw by short stop Morgan Sampson. Wójcik moved on the throw, but stranded on second base.

In the sixth, Shareday Christina singled with two outs and stole second base. Next batter Jessie van Aalst was walked intentionally, then Bloeming closed the at bat with a strikeout, but DSS still trailed 1-0 at that moment.

DSS got into scoring position in each of the first six innings, but was unable to score.

Trailing 1-0, Denice van Dijk led off the second inning for DSS with a double, but Ilona Andringa then retired the next three batters. In the third inning, Areke Spel tripled with two outs, but also stranded.

With one out in the fourth, Denice van Dijk and Lisa Waasdorp both singled, but were left behind on first and second base.

DSS got the bases loaded in the fifth. With one out, Noa Brand and Areke Spel singled. The first was forced out on a grounder by Sophie Bugter, but hereafter the bases got loaded when Morgan Sampson walked. However, a flyout then ended the at bat.

In the sixth inning, Lisa Waasdorp led off with a bunt-single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Lorraine Kieft. Waasdorp then reached third base on a wild pitch, but was left there. With that, DSS now had left nine runners behind, including seven in scoring position.

DSS got on base again in the top of the seventh when Noa Brand led off with a single, which was followed by a pop-fly. This was the lone inning in which the team didn't get into scoring position, as the inning and the game ended with a double play.
