First loss Terrasvogels & Sparks Haarlem; DSS & Olympia Haarlem remain unbeaten

HAARLEM (Neth.) / CASERTA (Italy) - Terrasvogels and Cupholder Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem started Tuesday (August 22), Day 2 of the European Premiere Cup in Haarlem (Netherlands) with a victory, but suffered their first loss later in the day. DSS and Cupholder FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem stayed unbeaten at the European Cup Winners Cup. DSS won twice on Tuesday, Olympia Haarlem once.

Terrasvogels recorded another mercy-rule victory, winning 14-2 vs. Therwil Flyers (Switzerland) in four innings. The team rallied for five runs in the second inning and six in the fourth. Terrasvogels collected 16 basehits, including three by Victoria McFarland (two doubles, one triple), Kimberly Jones and Dervisa Mutic. McFarland and Mutic batted in three runs.

In the evening, Terrasvogels was shutout 6-0 by Bussolengo (Italy), which added three foreign players to its roster on Tuesday. One of them was American pitcher Kelsy Janse Nunley, who struckout 12 batters and gave up only two hits. Another new addition today was infielder Britt Vonk, who this season also is on the roster of Terrasvogels. However, she played in Italy this season, before playing her second season in the National Pro Fastpitch in the USA. There, she won the championship-title last Sunday with Scrap Yard Dawgs. Against Terrasvogels, she was 2-for-4 and scored the first run after leading off with a triple in the first inning.

Sparks Haarlem shutout Mannheim Tornados (Germany) 5-0 in the afternoon. The team collected 10 basehits, including four by Anne Blaauwgeers (two doubles), while Cindy van der Zanden hit an inside-the-park-homerun. Winning pitcher Rebecca Soumeru struckout seven batters and gave up only one basehit in seven innings.

In the evening, Sparks Haarlem lost 2-0 to Joudrs Praha (Czech Republic). The lone runs in the game were scored in the fourth inning on a bunt-single by Magdalena Polmanová. Sparks Haarlem registered five hits, including two by Karin Tuk.

In Caserta, DSS won 7-3 in eight innings against Zraloci Ledenice (Croatia) in the afternoon. In the evening, DSS recorded a major upset by winning 1-0 against Forlì (Italy). Olympia Haarlem outscored Sant Boi (Spain) with an 11-0 score in four innings.

Against the Croatian team, DSS trailed 3-0 after four innings, but then scored once in the fifth and came alongside in the seventh, thanks to a 2-run double by Nicole Girard. As the score was tied after seven innings, a tie-break followed and DSS then struck with four runs in the eighth on a double by Lisa Waasdorp, a 2-run error and a runscoring single by Areke Spel, who was 4-for-5, including two doubles. Winning pitcher Amber Johnson gave up only five hits in eight innings.

In the game against Forlì, the score remained scoreless, then DSS scored the winning run with two outs in the bottom of the seventh inning on an error. Maryssa Becker led off with a single, then her pinch-runner Lorraine Kieft moved on a sacrifice bunt by Sophie Bugter and a wild pitch. With two outs, Kieft scored when Feline Poot reached on a walk-off error! Forlì recorded only three basehits off of Maryssa Becker, who went the distance for DSS.

In its lone game today, Olympia Haarlem won 11-0 against Sant Boi and needed only one inning to do the scoring. After two scoreless innings, Olympia Haarlem rallied for eleven runs in the third at bat on nine basehits, including a 2-run single by Rachel van Veen. Jessie van Aalst batted in two runs, one with a single, one with a double. Dinet Oosting also batted in two runs.
