Olympia Haarlem wins Cup Winners Cup; Terrasvogels wins silver at Premiere Cup

HAARLEM (Neth.) / CASERTA (Italy) -
FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem has won the European Cup Winners Cup for the second year in a row, winning 2-0 in the Final against Mediterraneo (Malta) on Saturday-evening (August 26) in Caserta (Italy).
At the European Premiere Cup, Terrasvogels finished in second place after being shutout 8-0 by Bussolengo (Italy).
Terrasvogels is the most successful European softball-club and participated in its European record-extending 36th Cup-tournament since 1978.
At Caserta, Olympia Haarlem scored both runs in the Final in the first inning on a double by Jessie van Aalst and a single by Mariëlle Vleugels.
The Maltese squad, which was almost completely compiled of Italian players, hit only three basehits off of Eva Voortman.
Earlier in the day, Mediterraneo reached the Final by winning 2-1 against DSS in the Bronze Medal-game (backdoor).
Trailing 2-0, DSS scored its lone run in the sixth inning, but outhit Mediterraneo 7-4.
The DSS-run was scored on a single by Feline Poot.
At Haarlem, Terrasvogels played a strong game against Joudrs Praha (Czech Republic) in the Bronze Medal-game.
Terrasvogels won 4-0 and showed some outstanding defensive plays, highlighted by a great catch by centerfielder Vicky McFarland, who was named Most Valuable Player of the tournament.
Terrasvogels also had the Best Pitcher of the event, as that award went to Dani Bonnet, who was 4-0 with an 0.00 ERA.
The Best Hitter was Anne Blaauwgeers of host Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem, which finished in fourth place.
In the Final, Kelsy Nunley threw a Perfect Game for Bussolengo against Terrasvogels.
The Italian squad scored three runs in the second inning, then rallied for five runs in the fourth to decide the game.
