Terrasvogels wins twice against Sparks Haarlem
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Terrasvogels won both games of its double-header against Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem on a hot Saturday-afternoon (May 27) in Haarlem. Terrasvogels won 2-1 and 3-1.

Today was a recordsetting hot day in the month of May in Dutch history, as it reached the 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) (and more) almost everyone in the country.

In the opener, in which both teams recorded only four hits, Terrasvogels scored both runs in the second inning, thanks to a single and a basesloaded walk.

In the second game, Terrasvogels broke a scoreless tie in the fifth inning by scoring two runs and added a run in the seventh. Terrasvogels collected 10 basehits, including two doubles by Suka Van Gurp, who batted in all three runs.

With the double loss, Sparks Haarlem dropped to fourth place. Most players on the Sparks Haarlem-roster are members of the Netherlands National Team, while others are playing in national youth-teams. The team also has a player from the Swedish and New Zealand National Team. Nevertheless, the team doesn't dominate as it had done in the past and already has lost nine games with the season just being halfway. The nine losses are the most for Sparks Haarlem since it lost ten games in 2009. Last year, the team lost eight games.

Sparks Haarlem got a chance to open the score in the bottom of the first inning, but failed to do so. Kehli Washington led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Anne Blaauwgeers. Next batter Maxime van Dalen walked and Washington moved to third base when 'ball-four' ended in a passed ball. Washington then tried to score on a grounder to short by Virginie Anneveld, but was eliminated at the plate. A grounder followed and two runners were left behind.

Leonella Elizabeth retired the side in the top of the first inning, but gave up two runs in the next at bat. Lizzie Clarijs led off with a triple and scored on an one-out single by Suka Van Gurp. The bases got loaded when Elizabeth walked Jessica Waasdorp and Dervisa Mutic (with two outs). Hereafter, the righthander also walked Kimberly Jones, which made it a 2-0 score. Three runners were left behind when a line drive from next batter Gabi Obia was caught by Elizabeth.

In the third inning, Sparks Haarlem made a double play. In the fourth inning, Elizabeth recorded three called strikeouts!

Dani Bonnet retired the side in the second inning, saw Sparks Haarlem leave a runner on second base in the third, but then gave up a run in the fourth. Virginie Anneveld led off with a walk and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Kingsley Avery and a single by Karin Tuk. With runners at the corners, the second out was recorded when Jenny Kinburn was ruled after she had touched her batted ball. Moments later, Tuk's temporary runner Jenny Kinburn was caught stealing in a rundown, but Anneveld scored in time before the third out was made.

In the top of the fifth, Terrasvogels got a chance to take some more distance. Dervisa Mutic led off with a single and moved on a wild pitch, then Kimberly Jones walked. Hereafter, a bunt-attempt ended in an out, then a line drive from Katharina Szalay was caught. In an attempt to double up Mutic at second base, a throwing error followed, resulting in runners on second and third base, but Leonella Elizabeth then closed with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the sixth, it was Sparks Haarlem that left two runners behind. With two outs, Virginie Anneveld singled and Kingsley Avery (bunt) both singled, but stranded on first and second base.

In the bottom of the seventh inning, Dani Bonnet retired the side and closed the game with a strikeout.
