Tex Town Tigers ends winning streak Olympia Haarlem
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Tex Town Tigers has ended the long winning streak of FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem on a hot Saturday-afternoon (May 27) in Haarlem.

Today was a recordsetting hot day in the month of May in Dutch history, as it reached the 30 degrees Celsius (86 Fahrenheit) (and more) almost everyone in the country. It was 30,1 degrees C (86,2 F) when the second game started.

In the past few weeks, Olympia's winning streak came into jeopardy several times, but the team had some late-inning production to stay unbeaten. But today, the team suffered its first loss of the season.

Olympia Haarlem first extended its winning streak to 17 games by winning the opening game with a 6-2 score. The team trailed 2-1 halfway the third inning, but then scored three runs in the home half to turn the game its way. In this at bat, Tex Town Tigers filed a protest regarding the situation in which Olympia scored three unearned runs to take a 4-2 lead. Olympia collected ten basehits, including three by Jessie van Aalst.

In the second game, Tex Town Tigers struck with six runs in the first inning and went on to win 10-2 in five innings to end the winning streak of Olympia Haarlem. TTT collected 12 basehits, including three by Annemiek Jansen, while Jasmine Peters batted in three runs.

FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem vs. Tex Town Tigers (game one)
Olympia Haarlem turned a 2-1 deficit into a 4-2 lead in the third inning in a situation that resulted in a protest. Peculiar enough, a similar situation happened two weeks ago and also involved Olympia Haarlem. The home team hold onto the lead to extend its winning streak to 17 games.

In the top of the first inning, Tex Town Tigers opened the score off of Ilona Andringa, who went the distance for Olympia Haarlem. The righthander hit lead-off hitter Nadine Marinus with a pitch, who then moved on a sacrifice bunt by Annemiek Jansen and a single by Laura Wissink. The latter then stole second base and when an error followed on second base, Marinus scored the first run. With two outs, Wissink tried to score on a single by Jasmine Peters, but was eliminated at the plate on a throw from leftfielder Tomoko Goda.

Olympia Haarlem immediately came alongside in its first at bat off of starter Lindsey Meadows, but also left three runners behind. Shareday Christina led off with a single and Brenda Beers reached on a bunt-single. With one out, the bases got loaded when Jessie van Aalst also singled. The tying run was then scored when Meadows walked Dinet Oosting. Hereafter, Beers was forced out at the plate and a flyout ended the inning.

Tex Town Tigers re-took the lead in the top of the third inning when Nadine Marinus and Annemiek Jansen opened the at bat with back-to-back doubles. A walk for Kimberley Zehnder followed, but the Olympia-defense then made a double play and a foul-out ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the third inning, a rare situation led to three runs. A situation that was confusing for some, but very clear for others. With one out, Mariëlle Vleugels and Jessie van Aalst both singled. Hereafter, Vleugels was forced out on third base on a grounder by Dinet Oosting. And then, the situation unfold. Tomoko Goda struckout, but the third strike was clearly in the ground. With that, the ball remained in ball and the batter had to be either tagged out or the ball had to be thrown to first base to complete the strikeout (and end the inning). Thinking she had struckout, Goda started to return to the dug-out, but teammates yelled that she had to run to first base. In the meantime, the TTT-defense also thought that an inning-ending strikeout had been recorded and was leaving the field, while catcher Aafje van Baal threw the ball back to the pitching circle. However, baserunners Van Aalst and Oosting continued running, as did batter Goda and all three scored! With that, Olympia took a 4-2 lead.

But the situation didn't end there. A long discussion of some 15 minutes followed between the TTT-coaches and the two umpires. In the end, it became clear that the ball had remained in play as soon as it had hit the ground on the third strike. It was a mental error to throw the ball to the circle and for the players to leave the field thinking the third out was recorded, as the game continued. TTT filed a protest against the situation and it was reported that the protest was directed against the communication of the umpires.

After the interruption, the game was resumed. The inning was still going on, Olympia had scored three runs, there were two outs and the players of TTT had to return to their positions. The at bat then ended with a groundout, but the game had clearly turned in favor of Olympia Haarlem. In the situation, a throwing error was scored and all three runs were declared unearned.

Two weeks ago, a similar situation took place in the first game of the double-header between Olympia Haarlem and Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem. In the top of the fifth inning, Sparks Haarlem trailed 2-1 with two outs and had a runner on third base. Hereafter, the batter struckout, but the third strike also was not under control of the catcher. This time, it were the Olympia-players who started to leave the field thinking it was an inning-ending strikeout, but of course the ball remained in play. The runner from third base scored the tying run and the batter ended up on third base. Olympia Haarlem had clearly learned from the situation, as it gave them three runs in today's game. This not only was a recognizable situation for the players and coaches of Olympia Haarlem, but also for umpire Mariana Atanasova, who also was one of the umpires two weeks ago.

Trailing 4-2, Tex Town Tigers got a chance to do something back again in the top of the fourth inning. Aafje van Baal led off with a walk and Anna-Bè Bartels singled. With one out, Daniëlle ten Donkelaar hit the ball into rightfield, but that resulted in a force out at second base. The bases got loaded when Nadine Marinus walked, but three runners were left behind when Ilona Andringa closed with a strikeout.

Olympia Haarlem added two insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth off of new pitcher Cheyenne Scheffer. The first run was scored when Brenda Beers and Mariëlle Vleugels began with back-to-back doubles. Jessie van Aalst followed with a runscoring single to make it a 6-2 score. With one out, the bases got loaded when pinch-hitter Stephanie Pearce walked and Rachel van Veen singled, but a flyout and pop-out ended the at bat.

Tex Town Tigers got a final chance to do some scoring in the top of the seventh inning. Nadine Marinus led off with a double and Annemiek Jansen walked. Two flyouts followed and the inning ended when Marinus was forced out on third base.

But it also ended in the final out of the inning, While Van Veen scored, Vleugels tried to advance to third base, but was eliminated there.

Tex Town Tigers took more distance in the fourth inning, scoring three runs on four hits. Nadine Marinus led off with a single and Annemiek Jansen reached second base on a bunt-double! Laura Wissink followed with a runscoring single. With runners on second and third base and one out, two runs were added when a sacrifice bunt by Jasmine Peters ended in a throwing error. Two runners were left behind, but TTT now led 9-2 and had reached a mercy-rule run-difference.

TTT added another run in the top of the fifth off of new pitcher Roos-Marijn Kramer. Myrthe Smid led off with a single, stole second base, moved on a grounder and scored on a single by Annemiek Jansen.

In the bottom of the fifth inning, Olympia Haarlem got runners on first and third base with two outs, but the inning and the game ended with a strikeout. And that also ended the winning streak.
