Dinet Oosting Most Valuable Player; Dagmar Bloeming Best Pitcher 2017
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Dinet Oosting (FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem) is the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 season in the Golden League, which is the highest Dutch league, while righthander Dagmar Bloeming won the award for Best Pitcher. Both were also the winners last year, making this the second MVP Award for Dinet Oosting and the fourth Best Pitcher Award for Dagmar Bloeming. Dinet Oosting won the awards tonight.

This years winners were announced tonight (Saturday, October 28) during the KNBSB Baseball Softball Stars Awards, which is the annual presentation of the awards for the best baseball- and softball-players of the past season. Tonight, the event was held at Claus Park Collection in Hoofddorp. It marked the sixth time that the awards were handed at this location, the last time was two years ago. Last year, the awards were handed out at the Lichtfabriek in Haarlem.

For the second consecutive year, the Stars Awards were handed out in the month of October. Before last year, the last time the awards were handed out in October was in 1988. From 1989 to 1999, November was the month in which the awards were presented. The awards have been handed out in December mostly since 2000.

As was done in the previous three years, the Slugger also was handed out again tonight. The Slugger is the highest recognition award of the Royal Netherlands Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB) and is handed out to a person (or persons), group, club or organization for promotional activities in order to promote the sport(s) of baseball and/or softball on national and/or regional level. In 2014, the award was handed out for the first time again since 1999.

Tonight, the Slugger went to Jack Heuts, who has been very active in the Province of Limburg. There, he promoted baseball at the local clubs and worked hard to get these teams competitive.

The award for the Most Valuable Player of the 2017 season went to Dinet Oosting, who was the catcher and played at third base for FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem. Last year, she also won the MVP Award. In 2011, she had won the Bep van Beijmerwerdt Trophy for most talented youth player.

Like she did a year ago, Dinet Oosting led the Golden League in several offensive categories, including batting average (.536), slugging average (.821), on-base percentage (.613), runs scored (40), basehits (45), runs batted in (37), total bases (69), walks (19) and stolen bases (21). She batted .078 higher than second placed (and teammate) Jessie van Aalst, who batted .458, who also was second in slugging (.708), on-base percentage (.509), runs scored (28), basehits (44), runs batted in (34) and total bases (68). Of course, Oosting also led Olympia Haarlem with these statistics. She also led the team in doubles (9) and homeruns (3). By leading in average, RBI's and homeruns, she won her second consecutive Team Triple Crown.

Defensively, Dinet Oosting made only four errors in 162 chances, which gave her a .975 fielding average.

It marks the third year in a row that a player of Olympia Haarlem wins the MVP Award. In 2015, Mariëlle Vleugels won, then Dinet Oosting won last year and now again. In 2003, Jocelyn Forest was the Most Valuable Player of the Dutch big league, while playing for DSC '74, the predecessor of Olympia Haarlem.

This year, three players were nominated again for the MVP Award.

Besides Dinet Oosting, the other nominees this year were Jessie van Aalst (FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem) and Karin Tuk (Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem).

Jessie van Aalst, who also was nominated last year, was the second-best hitter this season with a .458 batting average. She also trailed league-leader Dinet Oosting closely in slugging percentage (.708), on-base percentage (.509), runs scored (28, with teammate Brenda Beers), basehits (44) and runs batted in (34). Van Aalst led the league with eight triples.

Karin Tuk was the fourth-best hitter with a .413 batting average. She scored 26 runs (4th place), collected 38 basehits (8th) and batted in 23 runs (5th). Karin Tuk led the league in doubles (11) and homeruns (5).

Best Pitcher

For the second year in a row and fourth time in her career, the Best Pitcher Award went to Dagmar Bloeming, who played in her second season for DSS. She earlier won in 2012 and 2014 when she played for Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem.

That Dagmar Bloeming won the award this year was more or less a surprise, as she led the league with 11 losses, the highest total in her big league-career. The righthander was 8-11, but led the league with the best ERA, which was 1.30, followed by Dani Bonnet (Terrasvogels), who closed the season with a 1.47 ERA. With .194, Bloeming also had the lowest opposing batting average.

Dagmar Bloeming struckout 138 hitters, which is only one less than league-leader Lindsey Meadows (Tex Town Tigers). Bloeming also trailed Meadows in innings pitched. Bloeming threw 108 innings, while Meadows led with 155 2/3 inning. She pitched in 20 games (17 starts) and completed 14 of them (2nd place).

Dagmar Bloeming's eight wins gave up her a tie for fifth place. This category was led by Lindsey Meadows, who won 12 games, followed by Ilona Andringa (FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem) with 11, Rebecca Someru (Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem) with 10 and Micaela Whitney (Terrasvogels) with nine.

Last year, Dagmar Bloeming became the first pitcher of DSS to win the Best Pitcher Award in 39 years! The last DSS-pitcher to win the Award was Ineke Mulder, who win in 1974, 1976 and 1977. Terrasvogels leads all clubs with 17 Best Pitcher Awards through the years.

Dagmar Bloeming became the seventh pitcher to win the Award in two consecutive years and the first since Lindsey Meadows (Tex Town Tigers) in 2007-2008. Els Koks (Terrasvogels) did it twice. She won three in a row in 1979-1981, then two in 1983-1984. Sonja Pannen (Amsterdam Pirates) also won three in a row in 1994-1996.

Dagmar Bloeming becomes only the fourth pitcher in history to have won the Best Pitcher Award four or more times. Els Koks is the recordholder with six, followed by Fredy van Offeren, who won five times. Sonja Pannen also was named Best Pitcher four times.

Last year, for the first time since the early nineties, only one pitcher was nominated for the Award, which was Dagmar Bloeming. This time, three pitchers were nominated again, as Dani Bonnet (Terrasvogels) and Lindsey Meadows (Tex Town Tigers) were also nominated.

Dani Bonnet had the second-best ERA this season with 1.47 and the sixth-best opposing batting average (.251). The righthander pitched 81 innings (7th place), struckout 61 hitters (8th) and won eight games, which gave her a tie for fifth place with Dagmar Bloeming. Marjolein Merkx and Mikayla Endicott (both Roef!) also won eight games. Bonnet was 8-4, pitching in 16 games (13 starts) and threw eight complete games.

Lindsey Meadows, who has won the award three times herself, had the third-best ERA (1.93) and fifth-best opposing batting average (.245). The righthander led the league with 155 2/3 innings pitched, 139 strikeouts and 12 victories. She was 12-11 and threw in 28 of the 34 games played by Tex Town Tigers. Meadows started 20 games and completed 17, which is the highest total since Kirsten Scheele completed 23 games in 2013.

Best Hitter
Dinet Oosting (FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem) again led the Golden League this season as its Best Hitter. She batted .536 (45-for-84) to become the lone player this season to hit above .500. The second-best hitter was her teammate Jessie van Aalst, who batted .458. The top three was completed by Katharina Szalay (Terrasvogels), who batted .418.

Three others players also batted .400 or higher this season, being Karin Tuk (Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem), who batted .413, Laura Wissink (Tex Town Tigers) with .411 and Morgan Sampson (DSS), who batted .405.

Oosting's batting average of .536 is the highest since Karin Tuk batted .548 in 2014.

It marks the second time that a player of Olympia Haarlem leads the league in hitting after Dinet Oosting also became the first one last year. Through the years, the most batting champions played for Terrasvogels and Sparks Haarlem, who both had 12 Best Hitters. For Sparks Haarlem, six of them played for predecessor HHC.

Homerun Queen
Karin Tuk was back on top in this category, as she led the league this season with five. Last year, the Award went to Laura Wissink (Tex Town Tigers), who then hit seven homeruns and ended the streak of Karin Tuk, who had led the league in the previous four seasons.

It is the sixth time that Karin Tuk, who is the all-time career-leader in homeruns, leads the league in this category. She won her first homerun-title in 2010 when she played for Tex Town Tigers and shared first place with Noèmi Boekel and Chantal Versluis (both Sparks Haarlem).

It was the eighth in nine years that a player of Sparks Haarlem leads in homeruns. Overall, it marked the eleventh time that a player of Sparks Haarlem leads the league in Homeruns since this award was first handed out in softball in 1993. Back then, Marjolein de Jong was the first player to win this award. Hereafter, Lynn Geertman and Jacqueliene de Heer both won in 1997, then Blake Hoorelbeke hit the most homeruns in 2006. They were followed by Marloes Fellinger (2009), Noèmi Boekel, Chantal Versluis (both in 2010) and Debby Connor (2011). Hereafter, Karin Tuk led in four consecutive years (2012-2015).

Most Valuable Player Holland Series
The winner of this award already was announced after completion of the best-of-three Holland Series. The award also was handed out then after the final game during the award ceremony. This was done for the first time last year. In previous years, the award was handed out during the Stars Awards, as part of the other award-presentations.

After the best-of-three Holland Series against Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem, pitcher Ellen Roberts of Dutch champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem was named the Series MVP. She was added to the team this year, especially for the postseason. To make her eligible to pitch during the Play-Offs and Holland Series, Roberts pitched for the team in the first three weeks of the regular season. Hereafter, she went to the USA to pitch professionally in the National Pro Fastpitch. She then returned to the Netherlands and was 2-0 with an 0.00 ERA, pitching in all three games (two starts, one in relief) in the Play-Offs, striking 16 hitters in 14 2/3 inning.

Olympia Haarlem swept Sparks Haarlem in two games in the Holland Series. Ellen Roberts threw two complete shutouts and struckout ten hitters in 14 scoreless innings, walking only one and giving up only four basehits.

Egbert van der Sluis Memorial Trophy
This award is for the most talented softball-international under 23. The award is named after Egbert van der Sluis, who was active for many years in the area of player development, as well as recreation and promoting softball to be played at schools. He also had been a member of the board for the KNBSB for several years, while also being involved a long time in the then-extisting Eastern District and Region.

This year, the trophy was handed out to Rhowan Stuart, who was a member of the Netherlands National Junior Softball Team that participated in the World Junior Championship in the USA.

In previous years, the award was handed out players of the Netherlands National Team. It marks the fourth time that a player of Terrasvogels wins the award. The others are Maaike Zijlstra (1997), Laura van den Berg (1999) and Jessie van Aalst (2014).

Riet Vermaat Trophy
This award is handed out annually to the most talented youth pitcher of the year. The award is named after Hall of Famer Riet Vermaat, a softball-pioneer and a longtime pitcher of the Netherlands National Team. She also promoted the sport throughout the country.

For the second year in a row, the award went to Lisa Hop of the Talent Team Holland, who also pitched for Birds in the Silver League. In eleven games, she was 0-6 with a 6.03 ERA, striking out 20 hitters in 36 innings.

She also pitched for the Netherlands National Junior Softball Team that participated in the World Junior Championship in the USA.

It marks the third time that a player of Birds wins this Award. In 1999, Elske ten Hoope was the first.

Lisa Hop became the sixth pitcher to win the Award for the second time, but she became the first to win the Award in two consecutive years. The other 2-time winners are Mereille Hammink (1982, 1986, The Cardinals), Inez Hollander (1987, 1989, VUC), Sandra Baart (1992, The Saints, 1994, Schiedam), Ginger de Weert (2006, De Zuidvogels, 2009, Tex Town Tigers) and Ilona Andringa (2012, HCAW, 2015, UVV).

Bep van Beijmerwerdt Trophy
This award is handed out to the most promising youth-player. The award is named after softball-pioneer and Hall of Famer Bep van Beijmerwerdt, who in 1948 organized the first-ever softball-game and then also founded the softball-affiliate of Kinheim in Haarlem, which became one of the first softball-clubs in the country. She also made the contacts for the Netherlands National Team to play against American teams, some of which were coming from military bases in Europe.

This year the Award was handed out to Feline Poot, the short stop of DSS, with whom she made her big league-debut this year. In 29 games, she batted .235 (16-for-68) with one double and one triple. Feline Poot scored five runs and also batted in five.

Feline Poot also played for the Netherlands National Junior Softball Team that participated in the World Junior Championship in the USA.

Nol Houtkamp Award
Since this award was introduced, it had been handed out annually to a person (or persons) who has had many contributions to the development of (young) players. The award is named after Nol Houtkamp, who had a long association with the Netherlands National Team, as he had been its Head Coach for fourteen successful years. Houtkamp also coached many years at the club-level and in Belgium.

This year, there were two surprising winners, as the Nol Houtkamp Award was handed out to Bert Loggen and Carolien Stadhouders, who have nothing to do with player development. However, through the years, they were closely involved in the development of young softball-umpires. Both were active for many years at the highest level and retired after this season. They also officiated during many internationale events as umpire or techincal commissioner. In 2010, Carolien Stadhouders was the Home Plate Umpire in the Final of the Women's World Championship in Venezuela.

In October last year, Carolien Stadhouders was named Director of Umpires Co-Chair of the European Softball Federation and become responsible for the development and education of umpires at any level in Europe. Bert Loggen had been the Umpire Commissioner in the Netherlands for the past several years.

Coach of the Year Award
The Coach of the Year Award was handed out to Stanley Doney, the Head Coach of FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem.

In his third season with the team, the New Zealander guided Olympia Haarlem to the Championship-title, winning the best-of-three Holland Series. Olympia Haarlem swept Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem in two games to win the Dutch championship-title. This was the first-ever for the team playing as Olympia Haarlem. In 2003, its predecessor DSC '74 also won the title.

It marks the seventh time since 2004 that the Award is handed out to the Head Coach of the team that captured the Championship-title. The others are Johan Kluijskens (Sparks Haarlem, 2004), Monti Van Brunt (Tex Town Tigers, 2008), Juni Francisca (Sparks Haarlem, 2010), Gonny Farley (Alcmaria Victrix, 2012), Marco Molleman (Terrasvogels, 2013) and again Juni Francisca (Sparks Haarlem, 2014).

Stanley Doney became the fifth foreign coach to win the Award. Four Americans have won the Award in the past. The first was Darwin Tolzin (Head Coach Terrasvogels) in 2006. He was followed by Liz Kelly (Head Coach Netherlands Softball Team) in 2007 and Monti Van Brunt (Head Coach Tex Town Tigers) in 2008. In 2011 and 2012, Craig Montvidas won the Award for his successes as Head Coach with the Netherlands National Team.
