Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Reigning champion Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem split its double-header against Roef!, which makes its debut this season in the highest league. On Saturday (April 29), Sparks Haarlem shutout Roef! 7-0 in the opener, but then was shutout itself in the second game with a 5-0 score.

It was the third consecutive week that Sparks Haarlem split a double-header. The squad did it first on Opening Day against Tex Town Tigers, then also split a week ago against Terrasvogels.

Roef! had started the season with three consective losses, then recorded its first win a week ago against DSS.

(April 29)

Complete Schedule

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. Roef! (game one)
In the opener, American righthander Monica Perry made her debut in a Sparks Haarlem-uniform. She struckout nine batters and gave up only one basehit. Roef! only reached base off of Perry in the first inning. With one out, Kim Donkers singled and with two outs, Manon van Alebeek walked. Hereafter, Perry retired the next 13 batters.

For Monica Perry, this was her first big league-appearance since 2013, when she won the Dutch Championship-title with Terrasvogels. Back then, Terrasvogels defeated Sparks Haarlem in an exciting Holland Series. The team won the deciscive game at the Noordersportpark, the home of Sparks Haarlem, the same site where Monica Perry today made her comeback in the highest Dutch league. In the previous three seasons, she was listed as a roster-player for Terrasvogels. However, Perry was unable to pitch for the team in these seasons, as she then played in the Italian league, where she also plays again this year.

After Roef! had left two runners behind in the top of the first inning, Sparks Haarlem rallied for five runs in its first at bat off of Marjolein Merkx. Kehli Washington led off with a single and advanced on a wild pitch and a bunt-single by Anne Blaauwgeers. The bases got loaded when Jenny Kinburn was hit by a pitch. Moments later, the first run was scored when Maxime van Dalen walked in her first at bat of the season. She had been sidelined in the previous games recovering from an injury. With the bases still loaded, the next run was scored on a passed ball. A sacrifice fly by Virginie Anneveld and a single by Karin Tuk lifted the lead to 4-0.

Three runs were added in the third inning on two triples. Jenny Kinburn led off with a single, but was forced out on a grounder by Maxime van Dalen. Her recovery was then tested, as she scored all the way from first base on a triple by Virginie Anneveld. With two outs, Karin Tuk walked and then New Zealander Kingsley Avery followed with a 2-run triple to make it a 7-0 score.

Oolders Omaco Sparks Haarlem vs. Roef! (game two)
In the second game, the roles were reversed and Roef! shutout Sparks Haarlem 5-0. Winning pitcher Mikayla Endicott struckout six batters and gave up only three basehits.

It is very rare that Sparks Haarlem doesn't score at least once in a game. The last time that Sparks Haarlem was shutout was a year ago when it lost 1-0 to Terrasvogels on May 7. By the way, Terrasvogels had been the lone team (!) to have held Sparks Haarlem scoreless in the regular season since 2010. In that year, Terrasvogels recorded two shutouts (1-0 and 5-0), then added another one in 2012 (5-0). It then took four years before Sparks Haarlem was shutout again last year.

Sparks Haarlem got into scoring position only once, which also is very rare. With one out in the second inning, Virginie Anneveld singled and stole second base with two outs, but was left behind. In the fourth inning, with one out, Karin Tuk singled. Hereafter, pitcher Mikayla Endicott retired the next nine batters in order. Virginie Anneveld then registered her second single with one out in the seventh, but this time stranded on first base.

Roef! left a runner behind in the first and second inning, then was retired in order in the third by Rebecca Soumeru.

Roef! then struck with five runs in the fourth inning. With one out, Manon van Alebeek and Eva van Knegsel both walked. And then, the hitting and scoring began. Isa Los (one-run) and Mikayla Endicott (two-run) hit back-to-back runscoring doubles and rookie Sophie Verdaasdonk followed with a runscoring single, which was her first big league basehit. This led to a pitching change, as Monica Perry took over for Rebecca Soumeru. Perry walked Naftely Pietersz, then Wies Ligtvoet followed with a runscoring bunt-single to make it a 5-0 score. Roef! left three runners behind, but had taken a decisive lead.
