Olympia Haarlem repeats as winner of Mastenbroek Tournament
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - Reigning Dutch champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem has repeated as winner of the international J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament. On a cold and sometimes rainy Sunday (April 1), the team won 8-3 in the Final against Sparks Haarlem to win the 35th edition of the annual event and with that, it won the Jan van der Molen Trophy. The previous two years, Olympia Haarlem also won the tournament.

With three consecutive tournament-wins, Olympia Haarlem became the second team to accomplish this feat. Terrasvogels won the event three times in a row in 2001-2003. Terrasvogels is the overall record-holder with nine tournament-wins.

For the third year in a row, Olympia Haarlem outscored Sparks Haarlem in the Final. In 2016, the team won 6-4 after having trailed 4-0. Last year, Olympia won 3-1.

The weather conditions were not favorable today. When the first two games went underway at 9 AM, the temperature was only four degrees Celsius (39.2 Fahrenheit)! It was then decided to shorten the game-times, meaning the event would also finish earlier. With that, it was hoped to play all remaining games. That indeed happened, only the game for fifth and sixth place was cancelled.

Maxime van Dalen (Sparks Haarlem) and Kim Donkers (Roef!) were the Best Hitters of the tournament this year. They both batted .714 (5-for-7).

Final Standings:
1. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem, 2. Sparks Haarlem, 3. Carrousel (Russia), 4. SK Joudrs Praha (Czech Republic), 5. DSS/Roef!, 7. Tex Town Tigers, 8. Germany, 9. Barracudas (Switzerland), 10. De Glaskoning Twins.

Game 15 - Barracudas vs. Sparks Haarlem

While it was cold and it rained, the third day of the tournament went underway as scheduled at 9 AM. In its first game of the day, Sparks Haarlem shutout Barracudas, 7-0. Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, pitcher Ginger de Weert did very well. She struckout seven hitters and threw a Perfect Game!

Barracudas not only was unable to reach the bases, defensively the team committed six errors, resulting in six unearned runs. The cold weather surely must have contributed to the errors.

Sparks Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning. With one out, Kimberly Jones tripled and scored when a sacrifice bunt by Anne Blaauwgeers ended in an error. The latter then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Feline Poot.

The third run was added in the second inning. With one out, Kehli Washington singled and advanced on an outfield-error, then later scored on a 2-out infield-hit by Anne Blaauwgeers.

A 4-run rally followed in the third at bat on only one basehit. Three defensive errors contributed to two of the first three hitters reaching the bases and also led to a run. A wild pitch produced the next run, then a triple by Kehli Washington and another error accounted for the next two runs that lifted the lead to 7-0.

Game 16 - De Glaskoning Twins vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem

The game between De Glaskoning Twins and FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem went underway 20 minutes later than scheduled to give the groundscrew time to prepare the field, due to the rain. Because of the weather conditions, both Head Coaches gave their pitchers limited time in the circle. Twins changed pitchers every inning, while Olympia Haarlem changed its starting pitcher on a pitch-count in the second inning.

Olympia Haarlem scored three runs in the top of the first inning with two outs. Mariëlle Vleugels and Virginie Anneveld then both singled. Brenda Beers followed with a runscoring single, which also led to runners on second and third base. Anneveld and Beers then scored on a 2-run single by Bobbi Scheurkogel. Hereafter, Rachel van Veen hit the fifth consecutive basehit. A wild pitch led to runners on second and third base, but the inning ended when the lead runner was eliminated on a grounder by Emma Wójcik.

Olympia Haarlem scored its next run in the second inning. With one out, Jessie van Aalst (fielder's choice) was on first base when Dinet Oosting doubled. Van Aalst then scored on a wild pitch.

Without hitting a basehit, two runs were added in the third inning. The bases got loaded when Stephanie Pearce, Rachel van Veen and Emma Wójcik all walked. Cheska Ham and Jessie van Aalst also walked to bring in the two runs. Two strikeouts and a flyout ended the at bat.

Twins got two hitters on base in its first at bat when Imane Alou Issa (lead-off) and Minke Blok (with one out) both walked. With two outs, a force out ended the inning.

Olympia-starter Amber Krijgsman retired the first two batters in the second inning, then was relieved by Rosanne de Vries, who completed the game. She gave up the lone Twins-run in the third inning. Ellinor Keepers then led off with a single, moved to second base on a wild pitch with two outs and scored on a double by Minke Blok.

Roef! got into scoring position in its first at bat when Wies Ligtvoet led off with a double, but the team didn't score.

In the second inning, Roef! scored twice on three hits. Céline Janssens led off with a walk and Sophie Verdaasdonk reached on a bunt-single. The two moved on a sacrifice bunt by Gini Ketelaars. Eva van Knegsel then followed with a basehit, which brought in Janssens. Verdaasdonk also tried to score, but was eliminated at the plate. After Wies Ligtvoet had walked, Van Knegsel scored the go-ahead run on a single by Kim Donkers.

Roef! added another run in the bottom of the third inning when Charlotte Drijvers and Cindy van der Zanden led off with back-to-back doubles. After a pitching change and with one out, pinch-hitter Naftely Pietersz walked, but hereafter, the game ended.

Sparks Haarlem opened the score with four runs in the bottom of the first inning. Kehli Washington led off with a single and scored on a following double by Kimberly Jones, who joined Sparks Haarlem after last season when she played for Terrasvogels. Hereafter, Chantal Versluis connected for a 2-run homerun. With two outs, Kingsley Avery (fielder's choice) was on base and moved on a wild pitch and an infield-hit by Onaisha Franka. She then scored when an error was made during a steal-attempt by Franka.

In the deciding game in Pool B, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem recorded a convincing 8-1 win against Carrousel to finish in first place and qualify for the Final. Olympia Haarlem collected ten basehits, including a double and homerun by newcomer Virginie Anneveld.

Olympia Haarlem rallied for four runs in the bottom of the second inning on five basehits. Dinet Oosting led off with a single and Virginie Anneveld then doubled. A wild pitch accounted for the first run and a following single from Rachel van Veen brought in the next. With one out, Stephanie Pearce and Maranca Ham also delivered singles to make it a 3-0 score. With Pearce on third and Ham on second base, a fielder's choice-grounder by Brenda Beers resulted in the fourth run. Pearce was eliminated at the plate and when Beers continued to second base, a throw followed and on that moment, Ham scored.

Olympia Haarlem added two runs in the third inning. With one out, Dinet Oosting reached on an error and scored when Virginie Anneveld hit an inside-the-park-homerun!

Carrousel was retired in order in the first and second inning and left a runner behind on second base in the third at bat. The Russian squad then scored its lone run in the top of the fourth inning. Verdzhinia Gusakova led off with a double, advanced on a grounder and scored on a single by Marina Barysheva.

In the bottom of the fourth, Olympia Haarlem made it a 7-run difference. Stephanie Pearce and Maranca Ham led off with back-to-back doubles, which led to a run. But it led also to an out, as Ham was eliminated at third base trying to stretch her hit into a triple. With two outs, Jessie van Aalst walked and went on to score on a single by Dinet Oosting.

Game 21 - Tex Town Tigers vs. Germany

Tex Town Tigers won 10-3 against Germany in the game for seventh and eighth place. With a 2-0 lead, TTT rallied for eight runs in the second inning. TTT had only six hits, including two by Lizzy Uytendaal, who batted in three runs.

Austrian righthander Martina Lackner, who was a guest-player this weekend, went the distance for Tex Town Tigers.

In the bottom of the first inning, TTT opened the score with two runs. Annemiek Jansen led off with a double and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Myrthe Smid. With two outs, Laura Wissink was walked intentionally. After the latter had stolen second base, Nadine Marinus walked to load the bases, then Aafje van Baal followed with a 2-run single.

In the second at bat, TTT rallied for eight runs on four basehits. Cheyenne Scheffer led off with a triple, then her pinch-runner Amy Wells scored on a single by Lizzy Uytendaal. Hereafter, Marije Oosting-ten Thij walked. After the two runners moved on a wild pitch, the bases got loaded when Annemiek Jansen also walked. That led to a pitching change, but a single by Myrthe Smid and walks for Nita Hickey and Laura Wissink brought in three more runs. With one out, another run was added on a sacrifice fly by Aafje van Baal. With Hickey on third base, Wissink stole second and that brought Amy Wells to the batter's box. She had entered earlier in the inning as pinch-runner and now became a pinch-hitter. Wells walked and that loaded the bases again. Next hitter Lizzy Uytendaal enabled Hickey and Wissink to score on a single, her second in this at bat. Wells also was able to score when an outfield-error followed. A grounder then finally ended the long at bat and TTT was leading 10-0.

Germany then scored its three runs in the top of the third inning. With one out, Annie Stepniak doubled, then Katharina Szalay and Miriam Kemmer followed with runscoring singles. Alexandra Stüwe then also singled. With two runners on base and one out, pinch-hitter Mona Hörner delivered a single that brought in the third run. It also ended the game, as the time-limit was reached.

Game 22 - Barracudas vs. De Glaskoning Twins

Barracudas turned a 2-0 deficit into a 3-2 victory against De Glaskoning Twins to win the game for ninth and tenth place.

Twins failed to open the score in the top of the first inning. Imane Alou Issa and Ennia Ballardini led off with walks, then the bases got loaded when Claudia Kranendonk walked with one out. But hereafter, American pitcher Jordan Dixon struckout the next two hitters.

In the 2017 college-season, Jordan Dixon was 32-10 with 294 strikeouts and an 1.87 ERA for the Herd, the team of Marshall University. In that year, she was a teammate of French outfielder Eloïse Tribolet, who will play for Tex Town Tigers this season. Dixon had a good outing against Twins, as she struckout ten batters and gave up only three hits.

Dixon struckout the side in the second inning, but then gave up two runs in the third at bat. Imane Alou Issa led off with an infield-hit, moved on a sacrifice bunt from Ennia Ballardini, then scored on a 2-out single by Claudia Kranendonk. The latter went on to score on a throw that followed a passed ball during a strikeout. Sterre den Duijn followed with an infield-hit, but Twins again left two runners behind.

In the bottom of the fourth inning, Barracudas scored three unearned runs on three hits and three errors. With one out, Kimberley Zehnder and Adeline Glauser singled. Glauser's hit was followed by an outfield-error that enabled Zehnder to score. Moments later, Glauser scored the tying run when a grounder by Jordan Dixon ended in two errors. Dixon, who was at third base, was replaced by pinch-runner Jody Fischer, but she was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a bunt by Nina Wunn. The latter then moved into scoring position when Corina Grass walked and scored on a single by Ines Dübendorfer to make it a 3-2 score in favor of the Swiss team.

And so, Barracudas won its only game in the tournament to finish in ninth place.

Game 23 - SK Joudrs Praha vs. Carrousel

While the weather had improved somewhat during the day, SK Joudrs Praha took an early 2-0 lead in the game for third and fourth place, but in the end was left empty-handed, as Carrousel came alongside and went on to win 4-2.

After the Joudrs-defense had turned a double play, the team scored twice in the bottom of the first inning. Tereza Jakešová led off with a walk and scored on a following double by Aneta Prokopenková. With one out, the latter scored the second run on a single by Eva Rendlová.

In the remainder of the game, the Czech squad was held scoreless and left five runners behind, including the bases loaded in the fourth inning.

Carrousel didn't get into scoring position in the first three innings, but the Russians then came alongside in the top of the fourth. Nina Zakaznikova led off with a double and scored when an error was made on a grounder by Vera Kukharenko, who ended up on second base. Her pinch-runner Angelina Kushner then advanced on a grounder and scored the tying run on a 2-out double by Narine Stepanyan. She stranded on second base, as a line drive into rightfield by Alina Afanasyeva was caught.

In the bottom of the fourth, Joudrs got a chance to re-take the lead. The team got the bases loaded with one out, but then a force out at the plate and a grounder followed to end the at bat.

Carrousel then again scored twice in the top of the fifth. With one out, the team got the bases loaded, then two runners scored on a single by Vera Kukharenko to make it a 4-2 score.

In its fifth at bat, Joudrs was retired in order. And with that, Carrousel finished in third place.

Game 24 - Sparks Haarlem vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (Final)

In the all-deciding Final, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem struck early, scoring four runs in the top of the first inning. Sparks Haarlem narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in the second at bat, but Olympia Haarlem then again had a 4-run rally to lift the lead to 8-3 en route its third consecutive win of the Mastenbroek Tournament.

In the first inning, Olympia Haarlem scored four runs, three of them with two outs. Brenda Beers led off with an infield-hit and moved on a grounder and a single by Mariëlle Vleugels. With runners at the corners, Dinet Oosting delivered a runscoring single. After an infield-fly accounted for the second out, Rachel van Veen drilled the ball over the fence in left-centerfield for a 3-run homerun.

After Olympia Haarlem had left two runners behind in the top of the second inning, Sparks Haarlem narrowed the deficit to 4-3 in its second at bat. The team scored three unearned runs, as the Olympia-defense commited two errors. Lead-off hitter Maxime van Dalen reached on an error, then was forced out on a grounder by Feline Poot. A throwing error on a force play-grounder by Kingsley Avery then led to runners on first and second base in a situation in which three outs already could have been made. Hereafter, Onaisha Franka lined the ball down the leftfield-line and circled the base with a stand-up, inside-the-park, 3-run homerun.

Olympia Haarlem reacted with another 4-run rally in the top of the third inning. Dinet Oosting led off with a double, moved on a passed ball and scored on a single by former Sparks Haarlem-player Virginie Anneveld. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Rachel van Veen and Stephanie Pearce both walked. Two runs were added on a single by Emma Wójcik. The fourth run in the inning was scored with one out on a force play-grounder by Brenda Beers, which made it an 8-3 score.

In the bottom of the third inning, Sparks Haarlem was retired in order by Mariëlle Vleugels, who was the winning pitcher for the third time in this tournament.
