Olympia Haarlem repeats as winner of Mastenbroek Tournament
Nederlands
ENSCHEDE (Neth.) -
Reigning Dutch champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem has repeated as winner of the international J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament.
On a cold and sometimes rainy Sunday (April 1), the team won 8-3 in the Final against Sparks Haarlem to win the 35th edition of the annual event and with that, it won the Jan van der Molen Trophy.
The previous two years, Olympia Haarlem also won the tournament.
With three consecutive tournament-wins, Olympia Haarlem became the second team to accomplish this feat.
Terrasvogels won the event three times in a row in 2001-2003.
Terrasvogels is the overall record-holder with nine tournament-wins.
For the third year in a row, Olympia Haarlem outscored Sparks Haarlem in the Final.
In 2016, the team won 6-4 after having trailed 4-0.
Last year, Olympia won 3-1.
The weather conditions were not favorable today.
When the first two games went underway at 9 AM, the temperature was only four degrees Celsius (39.2 Fahrenheit)!
It was then decided to shorten the game-times, meaning the event would also finish earlier.
With that, it was hoped to play all remaining games.
That indeed happened, only the game for fifth and sixth place was cancelled.
Maxime van Dalen (Sparks Haarlem) and Kim Donkers (Roef!) were the Best Hitters of the tournament this year.
They both batted .714 (5-for-7).
Final Standings:
1. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem, 2. Sparks Haarlem, 3. Carrousel (Russia), 4. SK Joudrs Praha (Czech Republic), 5. DSS/Roef!, 7. Tex Town Tigers, 8. Germany, 9. Barracudas (Switzerland), 10. De Glaskoning Twins.

Game 15 - Barracudas vs. Sparks Haarlem
While it was cold and it rained, the third day of the tournament went underway as scheduled at 9 AM.
In its first game of the day, Sparks Haarlem shutout Barracudas, 7-0.
Despite the unfavorable weather conditions, pitcher Ginger de Weert did very well.
She struckout seven hitters and threw a Perfect Game!
Barracudas not only was unable to reach the bases, defensively the team committed six errors, resulting in six unearned runs.
The cold weather surely must have contributed to the errors.
Sparks Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning.
With one out, Kimberly Jones tripled and scored when a sacrifice bunt by Anne Blaauwgeers ended in an error.
The latter then advanced on a wild pitch and scored on a double by Feline Poot.

With one out, Kehli Washington singled and advanced on an outfield-error, then later scored on a 2-out infield-hit by Anne Blaauwgeers.
A 4-run rally followed in the third at bat on only one basehit.
Three defensive errors contributed to two of the first three hitters reaching the bases and also led to a run.
A wild pitch produced the next run, then a triple by Kehli Washington and another error accounted for the next two runs that lifted the lead to 7-0.

The team scored three unearned runs, as the Olympia-defense commited two errors.
Lead-off hitter Maxime van Dalen reached on an error, then was forced out on a grounder by Feline Poot.
A throwing error on a force play-grounder by Kingsley Avery then led to runners on first and second base in a situation in which three outs already could have been made.
Hereafter, Onaisha Franka lined the ball down the leftfield-line and circled the base with a stand-up, inside-the-park, 3-run homerun.
Olympia Haarlem reacted with another 4-run rally in the top of the third inning.
Dinet Oosting led off with a double, moved on a passed ball and scored on a single by former Sparks Haarlem-player Virginie Anneveld.
Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Rachel van Veen and Stephanie Pearce both walked.
Two runs were added on a single by Emma Wójcik.
The fourth run in the inning was scored with one out on a force play-grounder by Brenda Beers, which made it an 8-3 score.
In the bottom of the third inning, Sparks Haarlem was retired in order by Mariëlle Vleugels, who was the winning pitcher for the third time in this tournament.
