Terrasvogels wins Haarlem Series
Nederlands
HAARLEM (Neth.) -
Terrasvogels won the third edition of the softball-tournament of the Haarlem Series on a grey clouded and cold Sunday (April 1).
The team played one game on Saturday, which was won, while Amsterdam Pirates won its two first games.
Today, the two teams faced each other.
Terrasvogels won the game 12-2 to become the winner of the tournament, whatever the result of its next game against host Onze Gezellen.
Terrasvogels also won that game with a comfortable 14-1 score.
Two weeks ago, Terrasvogels also won the international Pre-Season Tournament of Roef! in Moergestel.
Initially, Onze Gezellen had another game scheduled in the morning against Hoofddorp Pioniers, but that team withdraw after having played two games on Saturday due to some injuries and a shortage of available pitchers.
It was proposed that Onze Gezellen played an additional game against Amsterdam Pirates in the morning.
However, as some players of the Amsterdam-squad had some other commitments in the morning that was not possible.
With that, the morning-game was removed from the schedule and only two games were played today.
Halfway through the day, both the baseball- and softball-tournament of the Haarlem Series were stopped temporarily.
All participating softball- and baseball-teams and umpires lined up around the infield of the baseball-field, as a moment of silence was observed to remember Caroline Walgien.
The wife of Onze Gezellen Softball Coach Rob Walgien passed away on Sunday, March 25 at the far too young age of 55 age after a four-month illness.
The impressive and crowded memorial service took place on Friday-afternoon.
Out of respect, on Friday-evening, the opening games in both tournaments were cancelled.
The softball-team of Onze Gezellen was line up at the first base-side and the team of Terrasvogels lined up at third base-side.
Rob Walgien has been the Head Coach of both teams.
His son Mitchell Walgien is a player of Kinheim after having played for Onze Gezellen.
Both teams participated in the event.
Some years ago, Rob Walgien also has been one of the coaches of the Rookie League baseball-team of Kinheim.

On a cold Sunday-afternoon with sometimes drizzling rain, Terrasvogels opened with a 12-2 win against Amsterdam Pirates, which had won twice on Saturday.
With the win, Terrasvogels als became the tournament-winner.
The cold weather of today also might have contributed to two injuries.
In both this and the next game, a player of Terrasvogels left with an injury.
In the top of the first inning, Terrasvogels opened the score with four runs off of starter Maja Kouwenhoven.
With one out, Noa Brand singled and Britt Vonk was hit by a pitch.
Ella Krommendijk then delivered a runscoring single, which was followed by an outfield-error, which led to an additional run.
Next hitter Lizzie Clarijs also singled.
The two runners moved on a sacrifice bunt by Jessica Waasdorp and both scored on a following single by Denice van Dijk to make it a 4-0 score.
Kelsy Pieneman added another single, but a grounder then ended the at bat.
In the second inning, Dervisa Mutic led off for Terrasvogels with a triple.
The throw towards third base was off target and Mutic tried to score, but the ball was retrieved in time to eliminate her at the plate.
With two outs, Britt Vonk also tripled, but stranded on third base.
Australian righthander Alice Donohoe, who arrived on Thursday, made her debut for Terrasvogels.
Despite the cold, she went the distance for the Santpoort-squad.
In the bottom of the first inning, Donohoe got the bases loaded, but finished strongly.
She walked Jessie Rodermans and Dana Rodermans, then gave up a single to Jeske Meewisse.
But with the bases loaded, Donohoe struckout the next three hitters!

Trailing 4-0, Pirates scored its first run in the second inning.
With out out, Resa ter Heegde singled, got into scoring position via a sacrifice bunt from Rosalie Moerkerk, then scored on a double by Jessie Rodermans.
Dana Rodermans followed with a single, but the two sisters were left behind at the corners.
While trying to field the single, Terrasvogels' 1B Noa Brand sustained a knee-injury and left the game.
While it initially appeared to be a serious injury, she was able to walk off the field herself.
Luckily, the injury proved to be minor.
Terrasvogels added two runs in the top of the third inning.
Lizzie Clarijs led off with a double and scored on a single by Jessica Waasdorp.
With two outs, Waasdorp scored on a single by Desiree Adriaansz to make it a 6-1 score.
In the bottom of the third inning, Lizzie Clarijs made a great diving catch as short stop catching a line drive hit by lead-off hitter Uchenna Jong Loy.
In the top of the fourth, it was the Amsterdam-defense that made two nice plays.
Lisa Waasdorp, who replaced Noa Brand, led off with a line drive into centerfield, but there, Dana Rodermans made a nice diving catch.
Hereafter, Britt Vonk singled and moved into scoring position on an error.
Ella Krommendijk followed with a line drive, but that was caught by 3B Resa ter Heegde, which led to an inning-ending double play.
After the Terrasvogels-defense had made a double play in the bottom of the fifth inning, the team added a run in the top of the sixth off of new pitcher Mandy van der Maas.
With two outs, Britt Vonk doubled and scored on a following single by Ella Krommendijk.
Trailing 7-1, Amsterdam scored again in the bottom of the sixth.
With one out, Stacy Groot singled and moved to second base on a 2-out single by Rosalie Moerkerk.
She scored on a single by Jessie Rodermans.

According to the tournament-rules, all games were to be regular 7-inning games, unless a mercy-rule run-difference was reached.
This game took awhile to be completed what time was concerned.
As there was no mercy-rule run-difference, the seventh inning began.
In the top of the seventh, Terrasvogels rallied for five runs.
That not only increased the lead to 12-2, but also made it an almost 2-hour game.
Facing new pitcher Babette Kouwenhoven, Jessica Waasdorp led off with a walk and scored on a double by Denice van Dijk.
She then scored on a following single by Kelsy Pieneman and hereafter, Desiree Adriaansz walked.
The two runners moved on a grounder, then both scored on a single by Lisa Waasdorp.
That brought Britt Vonk in the batter's box.
She 'only' neeed a homerun to hit-for-the-cycle, but that didn't happen.
Vonk delivered a runscoring single that made it a 12-2 score.
The bases then got loaded when Ella Krommendijk and (with two outs) Jessica Waasdorp both walked.
A pop-fly ended the long at bat.
Hereafter, the game was halted, as it almost was 3 PM.
At that time, the hosting club Onze Gezellen had planned the moment of silence for Caroline Walgien at the baseball-field.
It was initially planned to complete the game with the bottom of the seventh hereafter, but both coaches decided not to do so.
Terrasvogels collected 19 basehits in this game, including four by Britt Vonk, who was 4-for-4 with a double and a triple, reached base five times, scored two runs and batted in one.
Lizzie Clarijs was 3-for-5 with a double and scored twice.
Amsterdam Pirates recorded 10 basehits and was again led by the Rodermans-sisters.
Jessie Rodermans was 2-for-3 with a triple and batted in both runs of her team.

In the final game of the tournament, Terrasvogels recorded another big victory, winning 14-1 against host Onze Gezellen.
Jessica Waasdorp was the surprise pitcher for Terrasvogels.
She pitched her last game several years ago when she was playing in a cadets youth-team of Onze Gezellen.
Her mother Anita Bank had been a pitching ace of Onze Gezellen in the Dutch big league also pitched for the Netherlands National Softball Team.
Jessica Waasdorp did very well in her 'pitching-debut' and allowed only one basehit.
Onze Gezellen is coached by former Netherlands Team-outfielder Solange Starrenburg, who retired after the 2013 season after having played seven years for Terrasvogels.
She took over the coaching from Rob Walgien, who stepped down in the off-season due to the illness of his wife.
Solange Starrenburg will be the Head Coach of the team this season.
Jessica Waasdorp retired the side in the first inning.
In the second at bat, she gave up a lead-off single to Laura van der Bos, what was to be the lone hit for Onze Gezellen.
However, she was eliminated in an unassisted double play when 1B Denice van Dijk caught a line drive hit by Laura Burggraaf.
In the third inning, Waasdorp gave up the lone run of Onze Gezellen.
She walked Lisa Meyering and Danielle Gardeniers, who advanced on a passed ball.
Meyering then scored on a grounder from Fiona Sewalt.
Starting with this grounder, Waasdorp retired the final nine batters she faced.

Clarijs scored the fourth run in this inning when an error followed a single by Denice van Dijk.
In the third inning, off of new pitcher Isanthe Rouwenhorst, Terrasvogels added another run, but also lost another player.
With one out, Desiree Adriaansz grounded out, but sustained a hamstring-injury while approaching first base.
She fell down in pain and had to be assisted off the field.
When the game continued, Britt Vonk singled and moved to third base on two wild pitches.
The next two hitters in the batting order then didn't bat, as they were assisting Adriaansz in the locker-room.

It is not year clear how long her recovery will take.
