Sparks Haarlem opens Jan de Wit Tournament with win

HAARLEM (Neth.) - Sparks Haarlem opened the 30th edition of the annual Jan de Wit Tournament on Friday-evening (April 6) with a 6-1 victory against Carrousel from Russia.

The tournament goes into full swing on Saturday and concludes on Sunday. The event was first organized by DSC '74, the predecessor of the current multi-sports club Olympia Haarlem.

Carrousel is a frequent participant in international events in the Netherlands. Last weekend, the Russian squad also participated in the annual J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede. In between, the team remained in the Netherlands to practice and play some additional exhibition games.

In the opening game, Sparks Haarlem took charge of the game early, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning. However, these runs remained the lone ones for the team, as it was held scoreless in the next three innings. Sparks Haarlem then rallied for four runs in its fifth at bat to take more distance. Carrousel scored its only run in the bottom of the fifth inning.

In the first inning, Kingsley Avery led off with a walk, stole second base, then scored when Chantal Versluis hit a homerun with one out. Maxime van Dalen followed with a single and moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Anne Blaauwgeers, but was left behind.

In the next three innings, Sparks Haarlem also reached base, but was unable to take more distance.

In the second inning, Maaike Blaauwgeers singled with one out, but a line drive hit by Kehli Washington then ended in a double play.

In the third, Kimberly Jones reached on an error with one out, but was caught stealing moments later. Hereafter, Chantal Versluis walked, but was ruled out for leaving first base too early.

In the fourth, Onaisha Franka singled with two outs and stole second base, but was left behind.

In the meantime, Ginger de Weert dominated as pitcher for Sparks Haarlem. The righthander allowed only two hitters to reach base in the four innings she pitched and struckout six hitters. After having retired the first eight batters she faced, De Weert gave up a 2 -out single to Alexandra Chumanova in the third inning, but closed with a strikeout. With two outs in the fourth, she gave up a single to Maya Shalvadze, who moved to second base on a passed ball, but also stranded.

Sparks Haarlem rallied for four runs in the bottom of the fifth to increase its lead to 6-0. Maaike Blaauwgeers led off with a walk and Kehli Washington singled. A double-steal followed brought the two to second and third base. With one out, an error followed on a grounder by Kimberly Jones, which enabled Blaauwgeers to score. Hereafter, Chantal Versluis added a runscoring single. With two outs, two more runs were scored on a single by Anne Blaauwgeers.

Carrousel then was more productive in the fifth inning off of new pitcher Quincey Catsburg and scored its lone run. The Sparks Haarlem-defense prevented more runs. Vasilia Sorokina led off with a walk and Ekaterina Aleshina followed with a single. The two moved to second and third base on a double-steal. Hereafter, 3B Tammie Lijbers started a double play on a grounder by Tatiana Beltyukova. The latter was eliminated at first base, then Sorokina tried to score, but was eliminated at the plate. In this situation, Aleshina moved to third base and she scored moments later on a passed ball. Hereafter, Alexandra Chumanova singled (she was 2-for-2) and moved into scoring position on another passed ball. A walk fo Yana Islamova followed, but the inning (and the game) then ended with a grounder.
