Olympia Haarlem, Sparks Haarlem, Terrasvogels stay unbeaten on Day 2 Jan de Wit Tournament
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - On a warm and sunny second day of the 30th edition of the Jan de Wit Tournament, 13 games were played under very nice weather conditions on Saturday (April 7).

There were short sleeves and shorts visible amongst spectators. And yes, there were coaches coaching in shorts. Players, coaches, umpires, scorers and spectators finally enjoyed being on the field for playing a softball-game after weeks of cold and freezing weather conditions. Today, it finally Spring!

On Day 2 of the Jan de Wit Tournament, host FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem, Sparks Haarlem and Terrasvogels were the only three teams to stay unbeaten in the 10-team event. Sparks Haarlem opened on Friday-evening with a 6-1 win and added two victories today. Olympia Haarlem played three games today which all were won to become the first finalist. And Terrasvogels came into action twice today and recorded two wins.

On Sunday, the final games are played in the Preliminary Round, then the games follow that will decide the final ranking.

Game 2 - Onze Gezellen vs. Euro Stars

In its first game today, Onze Gezellen faced an 1-0 deficit in the bottom of the fourth inning, but then rallied for four runs en route to a 4-2 victory.

Fiona Sewalt went the distance for Onze Gezellen, which this year celebrates its 60th anniversary. She saw Euro Stars get into scoring position for the first time in the second at bat. In that inning, the first two batters reached base, but failed to score. Fleur Bos and Eliza van 't Zelfde led off the inning with singles and both moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Kim van der Valk. But they were left behind when two pop-flies followed.

Euro Stars was more successful in the third inning, as the team opened the score. Britt Amersfoort led off with a single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Britt Smits. She then scored on a 2-out double by Corine Ammerlaan, who herself was eliminated at third trying to stretch her hit into a triple.

In the fourth inning, the first three hitters of Euro Stars reached base, but the first two were forced out.

Onze Gezellen was unable to get into scoring position in the first three innings off of starter Shomayra Franka. In the first inning, Babs de Jonge walked with two outs, but stranded on first base. In the second at bat, Masha Meloni singled with one out, but was forced out on second base.

After OG was retired in order in the third, the team struck with four runs in the fourth inning. Babs de Jonge led off with her second walk, then scored all the way from first base on a double by Laura Burggraaf to tie the score. Hereafter, Laura van der Bos singled, which led to runners at the corners. A pop fly on foul territory ended in an error to extend the at bat of Masha Meloni and she then connected for a sacrifice fly to bring in Burggraaf. Next, Lisa Meyering reached on an error and Sanne Halderman followed with a bunt-single to load the bases. That also led to a pitching change, as Romy van der Ham took over. She began with a strikeout, but a wild pitch and an illegal pitch then accounted for two more runs which lifted the lead to 4-1.

Euro Stars got a chance to come alongside or take the lead in the top of the fifth, but scored only once and left three runners behind. Pinch-hitter Lisa de Vries led off with a walk, then moved to third base when Britt Smits singled with one out. The bases got loaded when Radna Mambi walked and a single by Corine Ammerlaan brought in a run. With the bases still loaded, an infield-fly accounted for the second out, then a flyout ended the at bat and the game.

Game 6 - Wesseling Vermins vs. Euro Stars

In its first game of the tournament, Wesseling Vermins broke an 1-1 tie in the second inning by scoring two unearned runs. The German squad added four more runs to win 7-1.

National Team-pitcher Claudia Volkmann gave up only three basehits in the four innings she pitched for Wesseling. Volkmann will pitch for Terrasvogels in the Golden League this season, but during this tournament, the righthander only played for Wesseling. Two infielders played for two teams during the event in Haarlem, being Katharina Szalay and Lisa Marie Köllner. They also played for Terrasvogels and Tex Town Tigers respectively for whom they will play in the Golden League this season. A week ago, Köllner also played for two teams during the Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede. She then played for Tex Town Tigers and the German National Team.

Wesseling opened the score with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. With two outs, Lara Brockmayer, who had reached on a bunt-single, advanced to third base on a single by Lisa Marie Köllner. For Euro Stars, Radna Mambi had doubled with two outs in the first inning, but she was left behind. The team then came alongside in the top of the second inning. Fleur Bos led off with a walk and Eliza van 't Zelfde singled. Bos then scored the tying run when Kim van der Valk also singled. That was followed by an outfield-error, resulting in runners on second and third base, but they stranded, as Claudia Volkmann followed with two strikeouts, then a grounder ended the at bat.

The German squad re-took the lead in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Romy van der Ham. With one out, Alisha Theissen reached on an error and Katharina Szalay was hit by a pitch. With one out, an error on a force play-grounder by Lisa Brockmayer led to a run. Szalay later scored in a stolen base-situation to make it a 3-1 score.

Wesseling Vermins added two runs in the third inning off of new pitcher Shomayra Franka. With one out, Tatjana Jung walked and scored on a following triple by Maxine Dunford, who later scored herself on an error.

In the fourth inning, Wesseling Vermins increased the lead to 7-1 by scoring two more runs. Milana Böttger led off with a bad-hop triple. The ball jumped up in front of short stop Anna Prins and ended up in left-centerfield. That enable Böttger to reach third base and she later scored wth one out on a passed ball, which also was ball-four for Lisa Marie Köllner. Her pinch-runner Katharina Held went on to score on a 2-out double by Tatjana Jung.

After scoring its run in the second inning, Euro Stars left a runner on first base in the third inning and was retired in order in the fourth.

In the top of the fifth, Lisa de Vries led off for Euro Stars with a single, but a double play followed. Next hitter Britt Smits also singled, but she was the final hitter in the game, as the 70-minute game-time had expired.
