Olympia Haarlem also wins Jan de Wit Tournament again
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem also has won the annual international Jan de Wit Tournament again. On Sunday (April 8), the reigning champion recorded a convincing 6-0 win against Sparks Haarlem to win the event for the third consecutive year.

A week ago, Olympia Haarlem also won the international J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede, which it also won for the third year in a row.

In the Jan de Wit Final of last year, Olympia Haarlem also recorded a 6-0 shutout. The team then faced Roef!, which didn't participate this year.

The Jan de Wit Tournament was organized for the 30th time by Olympia Haarlem. The event was created by the club's predecessor DSC '74.

Finally, it was Spring! After weeks of cold and sometimes freezing temperatures, the weather conditions were great this weekend. Saturday's temperatures varied from 19 degrees Celsius (66.2 Fahrenheit) and 23 (73.4) with an average temperature of 20 degrees (68) in the afternoon. On Sunday, it was the warmest April 8 in Dutch weather history. In the afternoon, it was 23.1 degrees Celsius (73.6 Fahrenheit), which broke the old record of 22.6 Celsius (72.7 F) from 1969. In the east of the country, temperatures rose ro 24 degrees (75.2 F). In the west, at the coast, there was a cool wind in the afternoon, but nevertheless, the weather conditions also were very there fine with temperatures around 18 degrees (64.4 F).

A week ago, it was only two degrees Celsius (35.6 Fahrenheit) when the third day of games went underway at the Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede. It also was very cold and rainy on the second day of the Haarlem Series.

In today's Final, Olympia Haarlem met Sparks Haarlem, just as it did in the Mastenbroek Final. However, for the second week in a row, the deciding game ended prematurely. Today, the game was halted after only two innings. Last week, the game lasted three innings. The reason was the same, as the team of Sparks Haarlem has some injuries and with that, it has a shortage of available players.

With today's games, the exhibition season ended for the Golden League-teams. The regular season in the highest division opens next Saturday (April 14). The new season in the Silver League begins a week later.

Chantal Versluis (Sparks Haarlem) was the Best Hitter of the tournament with a .857 batting average (6-for-7). Following her to form the top-10 were Nadine Marinus (Tex Town Tigers) .778 (7-for-9), Alexandra Chumakova (Carrousel) .714 (5-for-7), Stephanie Pearce (Olympia Haarlem) .667 (6-for-9), Laura van der Bos (Onze Gezellen) .636 (7-for-11), Maxime van Dalen (Sparks Haarlem) .600 (6-for-10), Katharina Szalay (Terrasvogels) .583 (7-for-12), Jessie van Aalst (Olympia Haarlem) .571 (4-for-7), Jacqueline de Hoog (Birds) .571 (4-for-7) and Tanisha van Krevel (Birds) .571 (4-for-7).

Game 15 - Terrasvogels vs. Carrousel

Terrasvogels opened the third day of the tournament with a 5-3 win against Carrousel. With this, Carrousel was eliminated for first place in Pool B and the Final. For Terrasvogels, this was its third win. In its next game, the team now faces Sparks Haarlem, which also has three victories. The winner of that game will become the second finalist.

In this early morning-game (it started at 9 AM), there were some crucial errors, resulting in five unearned runs. In earned runs, Terrasvogels would have won 2-1.

Terrasvogels was the most productive of the two teams. The squad opened the score with two runs in the bottom of the first inning. With one out, Britt Vonk and Noa Brand both singled. With two outs, both scored on a single by Jessica Waasdorp. Hereafter, Denice van Dijk was hit by a pitch, but the two runners were left behind.

Terrasvogels added its third run in the second at bat. Marijn Crouwel led off with a single and Masha Meloni reached on an error. Crouwel and Meloni, as well as pitcher Roos-Marijn Kramer, are players of Onze Gezellen, with whom Terrasvogels has a working agreement, making them eligible to play for both teams. The bases got loaded when Lisa Waasdorp walked. With one out, Crouwel scored on a grounder by Noa Brand, but again two runners stranded.

Pitcher Roos-Marijn Kramer retired the side in both the first and second inning, but then saw Carrousel come alongside in the third at bat. With one out and Tatiana Beltyukova (fielder's choice) on first base, Alexandra Chumanova walked. With two outs and runners on second and third base, Verdzhinia Gusakova singled in centerfield to bring in Beltyukova. However, an outfield-error followed, enabling Chumanova and Gusakova also to score, resulting in a 3-3 tie.

After Terrasvogels had made a double play in the top of the fourth, the team re-took the lead with two outs in the home half of the at bat, scoring two runs. With one out, Lisa Waasdorp singled and Britt Vonk walked. An error on a grounder by Noa Brand then loaded the bases. Hereafter, Waasdorp was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Ella Krommendijk. That also created some back-and-forth throwing, an error and two runs to give Terrasvogels a 5-3 lead.

Game 23 - Tex Town Tigers vs. Terrasvogels (3rd/4th place)

In a very attractive and suspenseful game, Terrasvogels won 3-2 in eight innings against Tex Town Tigers to finish in third place. In the Preliminary Round, games can end in a tie, but according to tournament-rules, the games that decide the final ranking needs a winner. When the 70-minute time-limit is reached and the score is tied, the game continues with the tie-break rule, meaning the new inning begins with a runner on second base.

Terrasvogels got into scoring postion in each of the first three innings off of Australian starter Jessica Tolmie. In the first inning, Katharina Szalay led off with a single. She moved on an one-out grounder by Noa Brand and a single by Britt Vonk resulted in runners at the corners. But the inning ended when the latter was caught stealing.

In the second inning, Terrasvogels opened the score. Ella Krommendijk led off with a single, then Jessica Waasdorp walked. With one out, Krommendijk scored on a double by Kelsy Pieneman, but Terrasvogels left runners behind on second and third base.

In the third at bat, Dervisa Mutic off with a single. She moved into scoring position on a grounder. Hereafter, TTT-leftfielder Aafje van Baal made a great catch on a hit by Britt Vonk. That brought Mutic to third base, but she stranded there.

Terrasvogels-starter Lizzie Clarijs had a fine outing. She threw seven strong innings in which she gave up only two basehits. Clarijs was supported with some nice defensive plays.

TTT got into scoring position for the first time in the second inning. With two outs, Nadine Marinus walked and stole second base, Clarijs closed with a strikeout.

In the third inning, Aafje van Baal led off with a single, but hereafter, three force play-grounders followed.

TTT came alongside in the bottom of the fourth inning. Myrthe Smid led of with a walk, then scored all the way from first base when Laura Wissink followed with a double. Wissink moved to third base on a sac-bunt by Nita Hickey, but was left behind.

Both teams were unable to get into scoring position in the fifth and sixth inning. As the 70-minute time-limit had expired after six innings, the tie-break rule came into effect from the seventh inning on.

For Terrasvogels, tie-break runner Jessica Waasdorp moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Denice van Dijk in the top of the seventh inning, but then was left behind.

The same situation happened for TTT in the bottom of the seventh. Tie-break runner Nita Hickey moved to third base on a sac-bunt by Nadine Marinus, but then stranded.

In the eighth inning, Terrasvogels struck with two runs. Tie-break runner Lisa Waasdorp then scored when a grounder by Katharina Szalay ended in a throwing error. Moments later, Szalay scored the next run on a sacrifice fly by Dervisa Mutic to make it a 3-1 score. The inning ended when centerfielder Annemiek Jansen caught two line drives hit by Noa Brand and Britt Vonk.

The suspense continued in the bottom of the eighth inning off of reliever Alice Donohoe. Tie-break runner Aafje van Baal moved to third base on a single by Lizzy Uytendaal, who was caught stealing shortly thereafter. After Amy Wells had grounded out, Annemiek Jansen drilled the ball into right-centerfield for a triple! That brought in Van Baal and made it a 3-2 score. With Jansen on third base, the inning and the game ended when Myrthe Smid grounded out to short stop Britt Vonk.

Game 24 - Carrousel vs. Onze Gezellen (5th/6th place)

Onze Gezellen closed the tournament with a 4-2 victory against Carrousel to finish in fifth place. Trailing 2-1 after one inning, the Haarlem-based team scored twice in the second inning and from there hold onto the lead.

Onze Gezellen opened the score with two outs in the top of the first inning. Babs de Jonge then walked and moved to third base on a single by Laura Burggraaf. The bases got loaded when Marijn Crouwel walked and a run was scored when Sanne Halderman also walked. But three runners were left behind when the inning ended with a strikeout.

In the bottom of the first inning, Carrousel answered with two runs. Both were unearned, as two errors contributed to the scoring. Lead-off hitter Yana Islamova reached on an error, then Verdzhiniya Gusakova singled. The two advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Narine Stepanyan. A sacrifice fly by Vera Kukharenko brought in the tying run. When that was followed by an error, Gusakova also was able to score. With two outs, two walks followed, but these two runners were left behind.

Onze Gezellen came back on to immediately in the second inning. With two outs, Jacky Huijben, Laura van der Bos and Babs de Jonge all doubled to make it a 3-2 score for the Haarlem-team.

In the bottom of the third, the Russian opponent got a chance to do some scoring again. With one out, Narine Stepanyan doubled and Vera Kukharenko singled. They were left behind on second and third base. First, a pop-fly accounted for the second out. Hereafter, Isanthe Rouwenhorst closed the inning with a strikeout.

OG added an insurance run in the fourth inning and then again scored with two outs. This time, there were four consecutive singles. The bases got loaded when Laura van der Bos, Babs de Jonge and Laura Burggraaf all singled. Van der Bos then scored when Marijn Crouwel also singled. Three runners were left behind when a pop-fly ended the at bat.

In its final at bat, Carrousel got another runner into scoring position. With two outs, Alexandra Chumanova singled and moved on a wild pitch, but a groundout then ended the game.

Game 25 - Sparks Haarlem vs. FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem (Final)

In the Final, FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem led 6-0 after two innings against Sparks Haarlem when the game suddenly ended prematurely. When the bottom of the second inning was about to start, it was announced that it was to be the final at bat. The reason for the sudden ending was that Sparks Haarlem was dealing with some injuries and didn't have enough avaible players to continue. A week ago at the Mastenbroek Tournament in Enschede, the Final between the same two teams ended after three innings for the same reason. That game was won by Olympia Haarlem with an 8-3 score.

Amongst the injured players are pitcher Rebecca Soumeru, catcher Anne Blaauwgeers and outfielder Maaike Blaauwgeers. Anne Blaauwgeers only played in the first two games of the tournament. In the Final, she did the catching, but didn't hit. Maaike Blaauwgeers did only play in the first three games. Short stop Feline Poot was limited to playing only one game per day, as she is recovering from an injury. In the Final, it was necessary to put two pitchers in the batting order. Besides starting pitcher Ginger de Weert that was Quincey Catsburg, who was the designated player.

In the Jan de Wit-Final, Olympia Haarlem opened the score with three runs in the top of the first inning off of starter Ginger de Weert. Brenda Beers led off with a single and Jessie van Aalst walked. With one out, Mariëlle Vleugels delivered a runscoring single. With two outs, two more runs were added when Rachel van Veen hit a double.

In the second at bat, Olympia again scored three runs. With two outs, Brenda Beers singled again and Jessie van Aalst received another walk. They both scored when Dinet Oosting followed with a triple. Hereafter, Kirsten Scheele took over the Sparks-pitching. She gave up a runscoring single to Mariëlle Vleugels that brought in temporary runner Jessie van Aalst, who ran for (catcher) Oosting. Virginie Anneveld then also singled off of her former teammate, who then closed with a strikeout.

Mariëlle Vleugels pitched for Olympia Haarlem. In the bottom of the first inning, she gave up a lead-off single to Kingsley Avery, who stole second base and moved to third base on a passed ball with two outs. Maxime van Dalen then walked, but the two runners then were left behind.

In the bottom of the second inning, Vleugels retired the side in what was to be the final at bat of this game, which ended after having played only 48 minutes.

And with that, Olympia Haarlem won the Jan de Wit Tournament for the third year in a row.
