Win and loss for Tex Town Tigers and Terrasvogels
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - The opening double-header between Tex Town Tigers and Terrasvogels ended in a split on Saturday (April 14).

Tex Town Tigers won the opener, then Terrasvogels won Game 2 of the double-header. Both teams won with a 5-3 score.

This also was a meeting of the two teams that will be led by a new Head Coach this season. Last year, the teams were led by a father-son combination. Jaap Braakman was the Head Coach of Tex Town Tigers, while his son Nick Braakman led the team of Terrasvogels. With two games remaining in regular season, Jaap Braakman was relieved of his duties by the club's Technical Commission. Petra van Heijst took over and led the team in the remainder of the season as Interim Head Coach.

This year, Tex Town Tigers is led by Robert Kovačević, who had been active in Germany in previous seasons. For Terrasvogels, Ferenc Jongejan took over as Head Coach, after having been Nick Braakman's Assistant Coach last year.

Since some weeks now, Terrasvogels has to do without catcher and powerhitter Karin Tuk, who sustained a severe knee-injury. The all-time homerun-leader is working hard on her recovery, but it will be quite some time before she will return into uniform. Also injured on the Terrasvogels-roster is outfielder Desiree Adriaansz, who sustained a hamstring-injury two weeks ago during the Haarlem Series.

In the opener, it was Terrasvogels that got into scoring position in the first three at bats, before Tex Town Tigers opened the score.

In the top of the first inning, Terrasvogels reached base with two outs off of Australian righthander Jessica Tolmie, who went the distance for Tex Town Tigers. With two outs, Noa Brand singled and Britt Vonk walked, but the latter was then force out.

In the second at bat, Jessica Waasdorp walked with one out and Denice van Dijk singled, but two flyouts followed.

Dervisa Mutic led off the third inning for Terrasvogels with a single and advanced when Britt Vonk also singled with one out. The two runners moved to second and third base on a grounder by Ella Krommendijk, but a grounded then closed the at bat.

For Tex Town Tigers, the first three batters reached base in the first inning, but none of them came beyond first base. Annemiek Jansen led off with a single off of German righthander Claudia Volkmann. Hereafter, two force play-grounders followed and a flyout ended the inning. Volkmann retired the side in the second inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Tex Town Tigers opened the score with four runs, which were all unearned. Lead-off hitter Aafje van Baal reached on an error. She moved with one out when Annemiek Jansen was hit by a pitch. The two runners advanced to second and third base on a grounder by Marije Oosting-ten Thij, which would have been the third out when the error was not made. But now it was only the second out and the bases got loaded when next hitter Nita Hickey walked. Hereafter, both Laura Wissink and Lisa-Marie Köllner both delivered a 2-run single to make it a 4-0 score for the home team.

After being retired in order in the fourth, TTT got another runner in scoring position in the fifth, With one out, Marije Oosting-ten Thij reached on a bunt-single and advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Nita Hickey. Next hitter Laura Wissink was walked intentionally, not only to set up a force play, but also to pitch around the powerhitter. That decision was successful, as the two runners stranded, because a foul-out ended the at bat.

Terrasvogels got into scoring position again in the top of the sixth and then narrowed the deficit to 4-2. These two runs also were unearned, as the TTT-defense made two errors. With one out, Lizzie Clarijs reached on an error. She moved on a grounder by Jessica Waasdorp and scored when Denice van Dijk also reached on an error. The latter then scored on a triple by Lisa Waasdorp, who stranded on third base.

TTT added an insurance run in the bottom of the sixth, which was its lone earned run in the game. Nadine Marinus led off with a single, moved on a sac-bunt by Myrthe Smid and stole third base. When that was followed by a throwing error, Marinus was able to score and make it a 5-1 score.

In the top of the seventh inning, Terrasvogels scored its third run. With two outs, Britt Vonk tripled and scored on a wild pitch. But that was to be it, as Jessica Tolmie closed the inning and the game with a strikeout.

In the second game, it was Terrasvogels that won the game with a 5-3 score.

Roos-Marijn Kramer, who was added to the team's roster for today's double-header, went the distance for Terrasvogels and threw a fine game. She pitches for Silver League-team Onze Gezellen, with whom Terrasvogels has a working agreement. The righthander needed only 78 pitches. She struckout two hitters and gave up only four basehits. However, she was facing an 1-0 deficit after four innings, but her teammates then turned the game around in the top of the fifth.

Terrasvogels was retired in order in the first two innings by TTT-starter Lindsey Meadows, but got on base from the third inning on. Tex Town Tigers also was retired in order in its first at bat, then got into scoring position in the second inning. Laura Wissink led off with a single, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Lisa-Marie Köllner and advanced to third base on a wild pitch with two out. She then stranded, as Roos-Marijn Kramer closed with a strikeout.

Terrasvogels got its first two hitters on base in the top of the third inning. Jessica Waasdorp led off with a double, then was unable to advance on an infield-hit by Denice van Dijk. Hereafter, Lindsey Meadows followed with two strikeouts and a pop-fly ended the at bat.

In the bottom of the third, TTT got another runner in scoring position. Myrthe Smid led off with an infield-hit, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Lizzy Uytendaal and a grounder, but also was left behind.

In the top of the fourth, Terrasvogels got close again to the opening-run. Lead-off hitter Noa Brand reached on an error. She was forced out on a grounder by Britt Vonk, who stole second base and moved to third base on a grounder, but Meadows closed with a strikeout.

Tex Town Tigers then opened the score in the bottom of the fourth. Nadine Marinus led off with a single and stole second base. With one out, she scored when a grounder by Lisa-Marie Köllner was followed by a throwing error.

This time, the lead was shortlived, as Terrasvogels rallied for three runs in the top of the fifth off of new pitcher Cheyenne Scheffer. Jessica Waasdorp led off with a double and Denice van Dijk followed with a single. Both scored on a double by Lisa Waasdorp to put Terrasvogels ahead, 2-1. Waasdorp moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Katharina Szalay, but was unable to advance on a bunt-single by Dervisa Mutic. Noa Brand followed with a runscoring single, which made it a 3-1 score and led to a pitching change. Jessica Tolmie took over, but was greeted with an infield-hit by Britt Vonk, which loaded the bases. However, the three runners were left behind when a strikeout and flyout ended the at bat.

After leaving two runners behind in the sixth, Terrasvogels added two insurance runs in the seventh at bat. Noa Brand led off with a single and Britt Vonk followed with a double. A force play was then set up by walking Ella Krommendijk intentionally. Hereafter, a run was scored on a sacrifice fly by Lizzie Clarijs and another one on a grounder by Jessica Waasdorp to make it a 5-1 score.

After giving up the run in the fourth inning, Roos-Marijn Kramer encountered no problems in the following two innings, but gave up two runs in the seventh. The righthander walked lead-off hitter Laura Wissink, who then scored on a double by Lisa-Marie Köllner. The latter moved to third base on the throw to the plate, then scored on a sacrifice fly by Nita Hickey. But a grounder and flyout then ended the game.
