Roef! hands Terrasvogels big loss, then loses second game
Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - Roef! played another fine double-header in the second week of the Golden League, but it were two very different games.

The team from Moergestel opened the new season a week ago with a double-header split against reigning champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem. On Saturday (April 21), Roef! dominated in the opener and recorded a big 14-2 victory against Terrasvogels, another team from the top-3 and last years finalist in the European Premiere Cup. In the second game, Roef! led 2-0, but lost 4-2.

In case Terrasvogels also would have lost the second game, it would have resulted in an unique day in the highest softball-league. At the same time today, Sparks Haarlem lost twice to Olympia Haarlem. With that, the traditional top-two teams in Dutch softball both would have lost twice on the same day. That didn't happen often if it happened at all. But Terrasvogels avoided a double loss and came from behind to win the second game. (April 21)

Game 1

In the opener, Roef! broke an 1-1 score with a 4-run rally in the top of the second inning and went on to win 14-2.

The fourteen runs are the most given up by Terrasvogels since May 16, 2016 when it lost with the same score (14-2) against Olympia Haarlem, also at home. Back then, it was the third time in 17 days that Terrasvogels gave up 14 or more runs. On April 30, the team lost 15-4 to DSS, then 14-7 to Sparks Haarlem on May 7.

For Roef!, the fourteen runs are the most the team scored while playing at the highest level. The previous high was 12, which it scored against the Talent Team Holland on July 16 last year.

Roef! collected 14 basehits, something it has done twice last season when it made its debut in the Golden League. Wies Ligtvoet and Cindy van der Zanden both had three hits. A week ago, Ligtvoet didn't play in the opening games. She also batted in three runs in this game and scored twice.

Like a week ago, Roef! had added several players to its team from Silver League-squad De Glaskoning Twins, due to some minor injuries. ,,But also to give these players some taste of the competition'', added Head Coach Jeroen Swers. The regular season opened today in this second highest league, but Twins didn't play today. It will play its first two games (against and at Euro Stars) coming Tuesday- and Thursday-evening. With Roef! today from Twins were Claudia Kranendonk (C/3B), Nina Oomes (OF) and Sheila van der Tang (RHP).

In the first two innings, Roef!-starter Marjolein Merkx gave up three hits and walked five hitters. Nevertheless, Terrasvogels scored only twice, then was held scoreless from the third inning on by Argentinian pitcher Tamara Togni.

In the top of the first inning, Roef! opened the score with an unearned run. In her first at bat of the season, Wies Ligtvoet led off with an infield-hit, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Donkers and scored with two outs when a hit by Isa Los ended in an outfield-error.

Terrasvogels erased the early deficit immediately by coming alongside in its first at bat. With one out, Dervisa Mutic walked and moved into scoring position on a wild pitch with two outs. Hereafter, Britt Vonk walked and a double-steal followed. Moments later, Mutic scored the tying run in another steal-situation.

Roef! then struck with four runs in the second inning off of starter Claudia Volkmann. With one out and Eva van Knegsel (fielder's choice) on first base, the bases got loaded when Naftely Pietersz was hit by a pitch and Céline Janssens singled. Wies Ligtvoet then connected for a 2-run double and Kim Donkers and Liz Snow added runscoring singles. With two outs, the bases got loaded again when Charlotte Drijvers also singled, but three runners were left behind when a strikeout closed the at bat.

In the bottom of the second inning, it was Terrasvogels that left three runners behind, but also scored a run. After Lizzie Clarijs led off with a single, the bases got loaded with one out when Denice van Dijk walked and Lisa Waasdorp was hit by a pitch. Katharina Szalay followed with a single that brought in Clarijs. Van Dijk also was waved home, but she was eliminated at the plate. The bases were re-loaded when Dervisa Mutic walked, but a grounder ended the inning.

Roef! added two more runs with two outs in the third inning. Eva van Knegsel led off with a double and Naftely Pietersz walked. The first was then forced out on a grounder by Céline Janssens and a strikeout accounted for the second out. The bases then got loaded when Kim Donkers walked. When next hitter Liz Snow also walked to bring in a run, a pitching change followed. Australian Alice Donohoe took over, but she walked Isa Los that led to another run. A strikeout ended the at bat, but Roef! now led 7-2.

In its next three innings, Terrasvogels kept on reaching bases frequently, but left three runners behind (again) in the third and fifth inning.

In the bottom of the third inning, Terrasvogels got the bases loaded with no outs. Britt Vonk led off with a walk, then Jessica Waasdorp singled. The two then performed a double-steal and a pitching change followed. Tamara Togni took over, but she walked Lizzie Clarijs to load the bases. The Argentinian pitcher then struckout the next two hitters and a flyout ended the at bat, leaving the three runners behind.

In the top of the fifth, Roef! rallied for seven runs to lift the lead to 14-2. It was also the inning in which the three Twins-players were inserted. The scoring was done off of Jessica Waasdorp, who became the new pitcher for Terrasvogels. She got the bases loaded quickly. After giving up a lead-off single to Wies Ligtvoet, she walked Liz Snow and Isa Los. Hereafter, Charlotte Drijvers also walked to bring in a run, which was followed by a runscoring wild pitch. After Drijvers was replaced by pinch-runner Nina Oomes, Cindy van der Zanden delivered a 2-run double. With one out, pinch-hitter Claudia Kranendonk reached on an error, which also led to the next run. Kranendonk advanced to third base on a pinch-hit double by Sheila van der Tang, which led to the next pitching change. Waasdorp was replaced by Claudia Volkmann, who re-entered as pitcher. The German righthander saw another run being scored on a wild pitch, then gave up a runscoring single to Wies Ligtvoet, her second hit in this at bat. Finally, the long inning ended when Kim Donkers grounded into a double play.

In the bottom of the fifth, with the game now having a mercy-rule score, Terrasvogels got a final chance to do some scoring, but left the bases loaded for the third time in this game. With one out, Lizzie Clarijs and Ella Krommendijk both singled. After the two had advanced on a passed ball, the bases got loaded when Denice van Dijk walked. But the three runners stranded when two flyouts ended the inning and the game.

Game 2

In the second game, Terrasvogels faced a 2-0 deficit when the bottom of the sixth inning began. The home team then rallied for four runs and went on to win 4-2 to avoid a double loss.

Lizzie Clarijs went the distance for Terrasvogels. She struckout three hitters, walked none and gave up only six basehits to throw her first complete game in her big league-career. With that, she was credited with her first big league-win as a pitcher. Clarijs mostly plays as short stop or at second base and in this game, she made only her third start as a pitcher in her career. Last season, she made four pitching appearances, including one start. Her only other start dates from 2015.

Clarijs retired the side in the top of the first inning, but then saw Roef! get into scoring position in the next at bat. With one out, Charlotte Drijvers doubled and Cindy van der Zanden singled. But with runners at the corners, a double play ended the at bat.

Roef! was retired in order again in the third inning, but then scored twice with two outs in the fourth. With one out, Liz Snow doubled and moved on a grounder. Hereafter, Charlotte Drijvers and Cindy van der Zanden again were productive. First, Snow scored when Drijvers hit her second double in the game and Van der Zanden followed with a runscoring single that made it a 2-0 score.

In the fifth inning, Lizzie Clarijs retired Roef! in order for the third time. In the sixth, she gave up the second double to Liz Snow, but this time, she stranded on second base.

Terrasvogels got into scoring position in each of the first five innings, but the team again stranded a lof of runners. That finally ended in the sixth inning when four runs were scored.

In the first inning, off of starter Kim Horsten, Katharina Szalay and Dervisa Mutic led off with singles, but the next three hitters were eliminated. In the next inning, the first two batters again reached base, as Lizzie Clarijs led off with a single and Ella Krommendijk walked. This time, a bunt-attempt ended in a catch, then a double play closed the at bat.

In the third, with one out, Dervisa Mutic walked and Noa Brand singled. That led to a pitching change. Sheila van der Tang, one of the added Twins-players, took over and retired the next two hitters.

In the fourth, Lizzie Clarijs led off with a double and moved to third base on a grounder. Hereafter, a line drive hit by Denice van Dijk resulted in a double play.

In the fifth, with one out, Katharina Szalay reached second base on a throwing error, then moved on a grounder to third base, where she stranded.

Trailing 2-0, Terrasvogels struck in the bottom of the sixth inning off of new pitcher Gini Ketelaars, scoring four runs with two outs. Remarkably enough, the inning began with a strikeout for powerhitter Britt Vonk, but hereafter, Jessica Waasdorp walked. After Lizzie Clarijs fouled out, the bases got loaded when Ella Krommendijk and Gabi Obia also walked. Lisa Waasdorp and Katharina Szalay then followed with back-to-back 2-run singles to put Terrasvogels ahead, 4-2.

In the top of the seventh, Lizzie Clarijs retired the side for the fourth time to seal the win and complete her first game as pitcher.
