Surprising scores on second day Mastenbroek Tournament
Nederlands

ENSCHEDE (Neth.) - On Saturday (March 31), all participating teams of the 3-day international J.C.J. Mastenbroek Tournament got into action on the second day of the event. And that resulted in some surprising scores.

DSS played three games today. Despite having a small roster at the moment, the team recorded two victories. The Haarlem-squad shutout host Tex Town Tigers 3-0 and won 4-1 against Barracudas from Switzerland. DSS opened the day with a 9-0 shutout-loss against Sparks Haarlem. However, later in the afternoon, the second game of Sparks Haarlem against SK Joudrs Praha from the Czech Republic ended in a 2-2 tie. In its other games, Joudrs won 3-1 against the Swiss squad and lost 4-1 to Tex Town Tigers. As a result of this, DSS now shares first place in Pool A with Tex Town Tigers, but is in first place based on the head-to-head score.

In Pool B, first place is shared by Carrousel from Russia and the National Team of Germany. Both teams faced each other in the first game today and that ended in a 2-1 win for the German squad in what might be a deciding game in this Pool. Hereafter, the Germans nipped Dutch champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem 4-3, then lost 5-2 to Silver League-team De Glaskoning Twins. Carrousel recorded two victories after losing the opener. The Russian squad won 2-1 against Roef!, then won 8-4 against Twins. Olympia Haarlem recovered from the loss and shutout Roef! 4-0.

The final games are played on Sunday.

Sparks Haarlem opened the score with two runs in the top of the first inning off of Anna-Bè Bartels, who went the distance for DSS. With two outs, Chantal Versluis doubled and scored on a single by Maxime van Dalen, who then scored when Feline Poot tripled.

Roef! came close to scoring the opening run in the top of the first inning. With one out, Kim Donkers singled and was able to reach third base when an outfield-error followed, but she stranded on third base.

Olympia Haarlem scored the first run in its first at bat. Lead-off hitter Brenda Beers was hit by a pitch and stole second base with one out, but then was eliminated on a grounder by Dinet Oosting. The latter advanced to second base on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Mariëlle Vleugels.

After Roef! left a runner behind on second base in the next inning, Olympia added three runs in its second inning. Jessie van Aalst led off with a single and Rachel van Veen walked. An error then was made on a sacrifice bunt by rookie Bobbi Scheurkogel. When a second error followed, Van Aalst scored. With runners on second and third base and one out, a pitching change followed. Kim Horsten took over, but she saw Scheurkogel score on a wild pitch and thereafter, Van Veen on a sacrifice fly by Brenda Beers, which increased the score to 4-0.

Roef! got into scoring position again in the third inning when Wies Ligtvoet and Kim Donkers singled with one out, but they also were left behind.

Olympia Haarlem also failed to scored in its third and fourth inning, leaving runners behind on second and third base, respectively.

Roef! got a final scoring opportunity in the fifth inning. With one out, Eva van Knegsel doubled and Wies Ligtvoet singled (and stole second), but then stranded on second and third base.

DSS won 4-1 against Barracudas in its last game of the day.

The Haarlem-squad decided the game with a 3-run rally in the top of the first inning off of starter Adeline Glauser. Jenny Kinburn led off with a single, then Annemiek de Rover lined out to centerfield, but Sophie Bugter followed with a runscoring double. DSS got runners at the corners when Morgan Sampson singled. Bugter and Sampson then scored when Stephanie Trzcinski hit a ground-rule double and Dominique Burger singled to make it a 3-0 score.

Barracudas got one run back in the bottom of the first inning off of Stephanie Trzcinski. With one out, Kimberly Zehnder singled, advanced on a wild pitch, then scored on a single by Adeline Glauser, but this was to be the lone run for the Swiss team.

In the second inning, Jordan Dixon took over the pitching for Barracudas. She struckout eight hitters and gave up only one more basehit in the remainder of the game. The lone basehit was an infield-hit by Morgan Sampson in the third inning after Sophie Bugter had led off with a walk, but the two runners were left behind.

DSS did score another run in the fourth inning. With two outs, Jenny Kinburn's hit into the outfield ended in two errors, enabling him to circle the bases and score a run.

Game 14 - Carrousel vs. De Glaskoning Twins

In the final game of the second day, Carrousel trailed 4-0, but rallied for eight runs in the second inning to win 8-4 against De Glaskoning Twins.

Twins scored three runs in the top of the first inning. Nina Oomes and Ennia Ballardini led off with walks. An error then enabled Oomes to score the first run and the next run was added on an infield-hit by Claudia Kranendonk. Next hitter Michelle van Bodegom doubled down the leftfield-line to bring in the third run.

In the bottom of the first inning, Carrousel got its first two hitters on base, but a force out at third base and a double play ended the at bat.

Twins added a run in the top of the second inning. Anne Ketelaar-Poot led off with a walk, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Ellinor Keepers and scored on a 2-out single by Ennia Ballardini to make it a 4-0 score.

However, this lead was not enough, as Carrousel rallied for eight runs in the bottom of the second inning. The Russian squad recorded five basehits and while the Twins-defense made three errors, all runs were earned. With two runners on base and one out, Nina Zakaznikova hit a triple. Next hitter Alina Afanasyeva was hit by a pitch. With two outs, a double-steal situation led to a run and an error. Another error enabled Afanasyeva to score the tying run. Hereafter, Verdzhinia Gusakova walked and Narine Stepanyan singled. With runners at the corners, another double-steal situation gave Carrousel a 5-4 lead. A double by Vera Kukharenko accounted for the next run and a pitching change. Sterre den Duijn took over from starter Carling Hare, but she gave up a 2-run double to Vasilisa Sorokina that lifted the lead to 8-4.

Twins left a runner behind on first base in the top of the third inning. Carrousel got two baserunners in its third at bat with one out, but the game then ended, as the time-limit was reached.
