Third win Netherlands Softball Team; Fourth game rains out
Nederlands

ŻORY (Poland) / OSTRAVA (Czech Rep.) - The Netherlands Softball Team shutout Poland 10-0 to start Day 2 of the 21st European Championship on Monday (July 1). In the evening, the Orange-squad started its fourth game of the event against Russia. However, that game was halted in the second inning due to rain and lightning with the Dutch Team leading 3-0.

The Netherlands Team played its first game today in the Polish city of Ż, where it also played its games on Sunday. Two pitchers threw a combined Perfect Game for the second day in a row.

Hereafter, the team traveled back to Ostrava in the Czech Republic for the evening-game. However, in the afternoon, the schedule was interrupted due rain- and thundershowers. Some games were postponed and started later. The Netherlands started its game against Russia more than two hours later than scheduled. But a new rainshower interrupted the game in the second inning and was then definitively halted.

On Tuesday, the Netherlands again will travel to Poland, but this time to Rybnik. There, the team meets Denmark at 10 AM. The team will stay in Rybnik, as the remainder of the game against Russia will then be played at 2:15 PM. With that, the Preliminary Round will be closed.

The Orange squad then returns again to Ostrava where it will play its first game in the Second Round in the evening. When the team finishes in first place in Pool C, it will play at 8:45 PM and then might meet Italy. In case the team ends in second place, it will play at 6:30 PM.

Netherlands vs. Poland

Dutch pitchers Ginger de Weert and Mariëlle Vleugels threw the second Perfect Game in two days. On Sunday, Vleugels closed the first one in relief of Ilona Andringa against Hungary. Today, De Weert struckout six batters in the first three innings. Vleugels then added a strikeout in the fourth and final inning of this game.

In the top of the second inning, with one out, Polish 3B Emma Wójcik made good contact on a delivery from De Weert. However, her line drive was caught by Mariëlle Vleugels, who then played at first base. Wójcik and Vleugels are teammates at Dutch reigning champion FysioExpert Olympia Haarlem in the Dutch Golden League. Wójcik plays in the highest Dutch league since 2017.

The Netherlands opened the score with two runs in the first inning. Britt Vonk led off with a bunt-single, stole second base, then scored on a double by Wies Ligtvoet. With one out, Ligtvoet scored the next run on a grounder by Mariëlle Vleugels.

On the hot afternoon, the Orange-squad added three runs in the second at bat. Virginie Anneveld led off with a single, then advanced on a wild pitch and a single by Karin Tuk. With one out, Anneveld scored on a wild pitch. Hereafter, an error was made on a grounder by Chantal Versluis, which enabled Tuk to score. Moments later, Versluis also scored on a wild pitch.

The lead was lifted to 7-0 by scoring twice with two outs in the third inning. This time, Damishah Charles led off with a single. With two outs, she scored on a double by Virginie Anneveld. The bases then got loaded when Karin Tuk and (after a pitching change) Cindy van der Zanden both walked. The seventh run was scored when Chantal Versluis was hit by a pitch, but the team also left three runners behind.

The game was shortened with another inning when the Netherlands reached the 10-run difference in the bottom of the fourth. Wies Ligtvoet led off with a walk and scored on an one-out double by Mariëlle Vleugels. Her pinch-runner Jessie van Aalst scored when next batter Laura Wissink also doubled. With two outs, Wissink's temporary runner Suka Van Gurp scored the tenth run on a walk-off wild pitch.

Netherlands vs. Russia

Due to the late start because of rain of the game between Great Britain and Croatia at Field #1 in Ostrava, the game of the Netherlands against Russia started two hours and ten minutes later than scheduled.

The Orange Team scored three unearned runs with two outs in the bottom of the first inning. Britt Vonk led off with a walk and moved on a wild pitch. With one out, she reached third base on a passed ball, then scored on a 2-out single by Maxime van Dalen. She scored the second run when a fly into the outfield by Jessie van Aalst ended in an error. Moments later, Van Aalst scored on a wild pitch.

With two outs in the second inning, Damishah Charles hit a triple. Shortly thereafter, the game was interrupted by rain, then halted by lightning.

Dutch pitcher Ilona Andringa gave up no basehits in the two innings she threw.
