Hoofddorp Pioniers wins first double-header of season
Nederlands

HOOFDDORP (Neth.) - Hoofddorp Pioniers won its first double-header of the season on Saturday (May 4), outscoring Twins Oosterhout, 9-3 and 8-1. It was a chilly day with an average temperature of 7,8 degrees Celsius (46 F) when the first games started with a windchill of 4,2 C (39,6 F). Besides that, there were some strong winds.

Last season, these two teams promoted to the Golden League by finishing in first and second place in the Silver League. This year, the Golden League expanded from six to eight teams, plus the Talent Team Holland as ninth.

Today was National Memorial Day in the Netherlands. On May 4, there are several Memorials throughout the country. At 8 PM, the National Memorial takes place at the National Monument at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.

When May 4 is a day in the weekend, games start earlier. Mostly at 12 PM, as was the case today. Not only to finish the double-header in time, but also to enable those who want to attend Memorials to do so.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Game 1

In the opening game, Hoofddorp Pioniers collected 11 basehits, including three by Mayara Brown, one of them a double. She scored two runs, as did Shari van Heyningen. Nina Oomes hit two doubles, while Susannah Groen batted in three runs.

Twins got several scoring opportunities, but left eleven runners behind, including eight in scoring position.

Twins Oosterhout got into scoring position in the top of the first inning off of starter and former teammate Sheila van der Tang, who played for the team last year. With two outs, Minke Blok singled and stole second base, but was left behind.

Twins then opened the score with two runs in the second inning, which were both unearned. With one out, Corine Ammerlaan reached second base on an outfield-error. With two outs, Ellinor Keepers was hit by a pitch, then both runners scored when Anne Ketelaar followed with a double.

Hoofddorp Pioniers answered with a 5-run rally in the bottom of the second inning off of starter Romy van der Ham. Shari van Heyningen led off with a walk, then moved to third base when a throwing error followed a bunt-single by Mayara Brown, who ended up on second base. The bases got loaded when Manon Marie walked. Susannah Groen followed with a 2-run single that tied the score. With one out, Pioniers got runners on second and third base thanks to a sacrifice bunt by Iris Dweelaard and both scored on a triple by Quilen Dirksz. She then scored herself on a following double by Nina Oomes, who wanted to stretch her hit into a triple, but was eliminated at third base, which ended the inning.

With one out in the top of the third, Minke Blok reached base again for Twins. Like in the first inning, she hit a single. This time, she moved to second base on a wild pitch. Everyone was safe on a fielder's choice-grounder by Sterre den Duijn, but the inning ended with a double play.

Pioniers added two runs in the third inning after the game had been suspended for five minutes by rain. Carling Hare then took over the pitching and gave up an one-out triple to Shari van Heyningen. She scored on a following double by Mayara Brown, who later scored herself on a 2-out single by Susannah Groen.

Trailing 7-2, Twins scored a run in the top of the fourth. Corine Ammerlaan led off with a triple and scored when next batter Sara Riou hit a single. With two outs, Twins got the bases loaded when both Imane Alou Issa and Machteld Rector walked. But the three runners were left behind when Sheila van der Tang closed with a strikeout.

Twins also left three runners in the fifth. Sterre den Duijn led off with a walk and Corine Ammerlaan then singled. Iris Strookman then took over the pitching for Pioniers. With two outs, she got the bases loaded when she walked Ellinor Keepers, but a flyout ended the at bat.

After Pioniers stranded a runner on second base in the bottom of the fifth, Twins got another scoring opportunity in the sixth. This time, the team left two runners behind after having the bases loaded with only one out. Imane Alou Issa led off with an infield-hit, stole second base with one out and moved to third base on a wild pitch. The bases got loaded when Minke Blok and Sterre den Duijn walked, but a double play then closed the inning.

Pioniers was more successful moments later in its sixth. Dionne Cooper led off with a walk, moved on a sacrifice bunt by Iris Dweelaard and reached third base on a wild pitch. With two outs, she scored on a double by Nina Oomes, who last season also played for Twins. Hereafter, Oomes scored the next run on a single by Kelsey Huijzers.

In the top of the seventh, Twins came close to a run. With one out, Emma de Brouwer drilled the ball into rightfield. She reached third base with a triple, but tried to make it an inside-the-park-homerun. However, she was eliminated at the plate. A grounder then ended the game.

Game 2

In the second game, it was Hoofddorp Pioniers that opened the score and led 4-0 after two innings. Leading 4-1, the team rallied for four runs with no outs in the bottom of the sixth to reach a 7-run difference and end the game via the mercy-rule.

Quilen Dirksz was 3-for-4 for Pioniers with a double and triple. She scored twice and batted in four runs, making her responsible for six of the eight runs Pioniers scored in this game.

Pioniers scored its first run in the bottom of the first inning off of starter Carling Hare. Quilen Dirksz led off with a triple, then scored on a passed ball.

The home-team added three runs with two outs in the second at bat. With one out, Iris Dweelaard walked, then moved to third base on two consecutive wild pitches. With two outs, she scored when Dionne Cooper reached on an error. Next batter Rose Mwaro walked and two runs were added when Quilen Dirksz followed with a double.

Twins got a runner into scoring position in the top of the first inning off of Serena Kersten, who went the distance for Pioniers and gave up only three basehits. With two outs in the first inning, the righthander hit Minke Blok with a pitch. She stole second base, but was left behind.

In the second inning, with one out, Danielle ten Donkelaar hit a double for Twins, but then got into a rundown and was eliminated.

Trailing 4-0, Twins scored what would be its lone run in the top of the fourth inning. With one out, Minke Blok was hit by a pitch again and also stole second base again. When next batter Sterre den Duijn flied out, she advanced to third base, then scored on a following double by Corine Ammerlaan.

Pioniers got another scoring opportunity in the fifth, but stranded three runners. With one out, Nina Oomes and Kelsey Huijzers (bunt) both singled. Oomes was then forced out on a grounder by Shari van Heyningen, but hereafter, the bases got loaded when Mayara Brown walked. The three runners were left behind when the inning ended with a strikeout.

But Pioniers then rallied with no outs in the sixth to reach a 7-run difference. Susannah Groen led off with a single, then her pinch-runner Femke Nuijten advanced when Dionne Cooper walked and the bases got loaded when Rose Mwaro singled. Quilen Dirksz followed with a 2-run single, which led to a pitching change. Danielle ten Donkelaar took over, but made a throwing error on a bunt by Nina Oomes, which led to a run and runners on second and third base. The game then ended when Kelsey Huijzers delivered a walk-off single. When it would not have ended the game, this probably would have been a double. However, according to the scoring rules, the value of a walk-off basehit is based on how many bases a runner advances to score the run that ends the game. In this case, that runner came from third base and with that, the batter was credited with a single.
