Roef! and Terrasvogels split close games in double-header

MOERGESTEL (Neth.) -
The two games Roef! and Terrasvogels played in their double-header on Saturday (May 4) were close, resulting in a split.
Terrasvogels won the opener with a 3-2 score, then Roef! won the second game, 5-3.
It was a chilly day with an average temperature of 7,8 degrees Celsius (46 F) when the first games started with a windchill of 4,2 C (39,6 F).
Besides that, there were some strong winds.
In the opening game, Terrasvogels trailed, but then decided the game in the sixth inning by scoring two runs.
In the second game, it was Roef! that trailed, but turned it around in its favor.
Today was National Memorial Day in the Netherlands.
On May 4, there are several Memorials throughout the country.
At 8 PM, the National Memorial takes place at the National Monument at the Dam Square in Amsterdam.
When May 4 is a day in the weekend, games start earlier.
Mostly at 12 PM, as was the case today.
Not only to finish the double-header in time, but also to enable those who want to attend Memorials to do so.

Game 1
The opening game was a pitching-duel between Rachael Knapp (Roef!) and Roos-Marijn Kramer (Terrasvogels).
Roef! outhit Terrasvogels 6-4, but after scoring twice in the first inning, the team was held scoreless.
Terrasvogels turned the game around and decided the game in the sixth inning.
Rachael Knapp retired the side in the top of the first inning, then was supported with two runs in the bottom of the first.
Wies Ligtvoet led off with a triple and scored the first run on a following single by Kim Donkers.
With two outs, Isa Los delivered a double and that enabled Donkers to score the second run.
For Roef!, the scoring ended here.
In the remainder of the game, the team got several runners in scoring position, but was held scoreless.
In the top of the second inning, Terrasvogels cut the deficit in half.
Karin Tuk led off with a walk and moved to third base on two grounders.
She then scored on a triple by Bobbi Scheurkogel, who stranded herself, as Knapp closed with a strikeout.

In the fourth inning, Roef! got into scoring position again.
With two outs, Sophie Verdaasdonk and Amy Udink both walked, but were left behind.
Another Roef!-runner stranded on second base in the fifth.
With one out, Kim Donkers reached second base on an outfield-error, but was left there.
Terrasvogels left a runner behind on second base in the third inning, then was retired in order in the next two at bats.
The team then struck with two runs on three basehits with two outs in the top of the sixth inning.
With one out, Katharina Szalay singled and advanced to third base on a 2-out single by Karin Tuk, who ended up on second base on the throw.
The two runners then both scored on a single by Jessica Waasdorp to put Terrasvogels ahead, 3-2.
Roef! got its next runner in scoring position moments later, but again left a runner behind on second base.
Roef! got a bigger chance to come alongside in the bottom of the seventh.
With one out, Wies Ligtvoet singled, stole second base and reached third base on a wild pitch.
Next batter Kim Donkers walked and moved on a grounder, which kept Ligtvoet at third base.
The two runners stranded on second and third base, as a pop-fly ended the inning and the game.

Game 2
Terrasvogels was off to a good start, scoring two runs in the top of the first inning off of starting pitcher Marjolein Merkx.
She hit lead-off hitter Yindi Beekveldt with a pitch, then got the bases loaded with one out when she walked Lizzie Clarijs and Karin Tuk.
The first run was then scored on a grounder by Jessica Waasdorp and a single by Ella Krommendijk brought in Clarijs.
Temporary runner Waasdorp (who ran for Tuk) also was waved home, but she was eliminated at the plate.
Roef! answered with three runs in its first at bat off of starter Roos-Marijn Kramer.
Wies Ligtvoet led off with an infield-hit and stole second base.
With one out, she scored from second base on a bunt-single by Isa Los.
After Los had stolen second base, she advanced on a grounder, then scored the tying run on a single by Sophie Verdaasdonk.
She became the third runner in this at bat to steal second base, then scored when Cindy van der Zanden tripled.
Kramer closed with a strikeout, but Roef! now led with a 3-2 score.
After a 4-minute delay due to hail, Roef! got into scoring postion again in the bottom of the second inning.
Charlotte Drijvers led off with a walk and Onaisha Franka reached on a bunt-single, but the two would be left behind on second and third base.
In both the third and fourth inning, Roef! again failed to add runs and left five runners behind.

In the third, Elizabeth Snow and Sophie Verdaasdonk (bunt) led off with singles.
With two outs, the bases got loaded when Charlotte Drijvers was hit by a pitch.
The three were left behind when Kramer again ended with a strikeout.
In the fourth, off of new pitcher Lizzie Clarijs, with one out, Kim Donkers and Isa Los both reached on an error.
They stranded on second and third base.
Roef! then scored its fourth run in the fifth inning when Cindy van der Zanden led off with a homerun.
The home-team added another run in the sixth.
Wies Ligtvoet led off with a bunt-single and stole second base, then moved to third base on a sacrifice bunt by Kim Donkers.
With two outs and after Elizabeth Snow was hit by a pitch, Ligtvoet scored when Sophie Verdaasdonk reached on an error.
Terrasvogels was unable to get into scoring position since the second inning.
The team stranded two runners on first base throught the fifth inning.
In the sixth, with one out, the team got on base again, but two runners were forced out at second base.
Trailing 5-2, Terrasvogels scored again in the top of the seventh.
Bobbi Scheurkogel led off with a walk, which led to a pitching change.
Kim Horsten took over, but she was greeted with a single by Gabi Obia.
The two moved on a grounder by Desiree Adriaansz, then a run was scored on a following grounder by Yindi Beekveldt.
A grounder by Katharina Szalay then ended the game.
