Nederlands

SANTPOORT-ZUID (Neth.) - Terrasvogels won twice against Twins Oosterhout on Saturday (April 20) in the first of two double-headers this Easter Weekend.

In the opener, Terrasvogels won 6-1. The second game offered much more suspense. Twins opened the score with three runs in the first inning, but was unable to hold onto the lead. In the end, Terrasvogels nipped Twins with an 8-7 score in an attractive game that offered a lot of action.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Game 1

Terrasvogels opened the score in the bottom of the first inning off of starting pitcher Romy van der Ham. With one out, Katharina Szalay reached second base on an error, then scored when next batter Lizzie Clarijs singled. But the team also left two runners behind.

In the top of the second inning, it was Twins that stranded two runners off of Roos-Marijn Kramer, who went the distance for Terrasvogels. But as Terrasvogels, the team scored once to make it an 1-1 score. Sterre den Duijn led off with a great at bat, fouling off ten pitches before hitting a single on the 15th pitch she saw. After she had into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt by Machteld Rector, Daniëlle ten Donkelaar walked. The two runners moved on a wild pitch and the bases got loaded when Corine Ammerlaan also walked. A grounder by Sara Riou brought in the tying run, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Terrasvogels got a chance to re-take the lead in the bottom of the second inning, but was unable to do so. Bobbi Scheurkogel led off with a single and moved on a sacrifice bunt by Gabi Obia. Next, Kelsy Pieneman walked and the two runners advanced to second and third base after a foul-out, but then were left behind.

But in the third inning, the home-team scored twice. With one out, Karin Tuk doubled and Jessica Waasdorp singled. A run was then scored when Ella Krommendijk's sacrifice bunt ended in an error. With runners on second and third base, the next run was scored on a single by Bobbi Scheurkogel. Krommendijk also tried to score, but she was eliminated at the plate.

From the fourth inning on, Twins was retired in order by Roos-Marijn Kramer, while Terrasvogels added three more runs.

In the fifth, Terrasvogels scored with two outs, but also left the bases loaded. Jessica Waasdorp then doubled and scored on a following single by Ella Krommendijk. When next batter Bobbi Scheurkogel also singled, a pitching change followed. Carling Hare took over, but she got the bases loaded when she hit Gabi Obia with a pitch. A strikeout then ended thet at bat.

Gabi Obia was hit on her hand, but stayed in the game and she was the catcher in the second game. Afterwards, it can be concluded that her catching might be somewhat of an accomplishment. As her hand remained somewhat painful, she went to a nearby hospital after the second game. There, it was diagnosed that she had fractured a finger!

Terrasvogels added two more runs in the sixth, but again three runners were left behind. Pinch-hitter Desiree Adriaansz (who fractured a finger during the exhibition season) led off with a walk. Her pinch-runner Yindi Beekveldt (re-entry) then moved on a grounder by Katharina Szalay and scored on a following single by Lizzie Clarijs. After Karin Tuk walked, Jessica Waasdorp hit a hard grounder towards short. There, runner Lizzie Clarijs was hit by the batted ball and ruled out, meaning Waasdorp was credited with an infield-hit. Hereafter, Ella Krommendijk walked, but at the same time, catcher Corine Ammerlaan made a throwing error towards third base, enabling Temporary Runner Lizzie Clarijs (running for Tuk) to score. The bases got loaded when Bobbi Scheurkogel reached on an error, but again, the inning ended with a strikeout.

Game 2

Twins took an early 3-0 lead in the top of the first inning off of starter Bobbi Scheurkogel, but the team failed to hold onto the lead and in the end was left empty-handed.

In the first inning, Tess Remmers walked with one out, then Minke Blok doubled. With first base open, a force play was set by walking Sterre den Duijn intentionally. But hereafter, a run was scored on a wild pitch and Machteld Rector followed with a 2-run single.

Terrasvogels immediately answered with two runs in its first at bat off of British starter Carling Hare. The bases got loaded quickly. Yindi Beekveldt led off with a bunt-single, then Katharina Szalay singled and Lizzie Clarijs walked. Hereafter, Clarijs was forced out on a grounder by Karin Tuk, but that also led to a run. Jessica Waasdorp followed with a bunt towards third base. Szalay beat the throw to the plate and everyone was safe, making it a fielder's choice/sacrifice bunt. Another sac-bunt followed, this time by Ella Krommendijk, but the team left runners behind on second and third base.

In the second inning, Terrasvogels added two more runs. With one out, Kelsy Pieneman walked and scored the tying run on a triple by Yindi Beekveldt. She then scored on a sacrifice bunt/squeeze by Katharina Szalay to put Terrasvogels ahead, 4-3.

That lead also was shortlived, as Twins came alongside in the top of the third inning. Tess Remmers led off with a single and Minke Blok doubled. That led to a pitching change, as Roos-Marijn Kramer took over from Bobbi Scheurkogel. Kramer walked Sterre den Duijn intentionally to create a force play, but then gave up a runscoring single to Machteld Rector. With the score now at 4-4, the bases loaded and still no outs, Twins had a chance to do some more scoring. But that didn't happen. First, Blok was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Daniëlle ten Donkelaar, then a strikeout and flyout followed, meaning three runners were left behind.

But in the top of the fourth, Twins again did some scoring to re-take the lead. With one out, Sara Riou walked. She moved on a sacrifice bunt by Tess Remmers, then Minke Blok was hit by a pitch. The two advanced on a wild pitch, then both scored on a double by Sterre den Duijn.

Trailing 6-4, Terrasvogels decided the game with a 4-run rally in the bottom of the fourth. Not aware that she was playing with a fractured finger, Gabi Obia led off with a walk, but she was forced out on a grounder by Kelsy Pieneman. Yindi Beekveldt followed with a single that brought Pieneman to third base. She was unable to advance on a bunt-single by Katharina Szalay, but that loaded the bases. Hereafter, Lizzie Clarijs walked to bring in a run. The bases were then cleared when next batter Karin Tuk doubled down the rightfield-line to put Terrasvogels ahead 8-6.

Twins managed to add another run in the top of the fifth to narrow the deficit to 8-7. Daniëlle ten Donkelaar led off with a single, then pinch-hitter Ellinor Keepers was hit by a pitch. After the two had advanced on a sacrifice bunt by Imane Alou Issa, a run was scored on a single by Anne Ketelaar. The latter then moved into scoring position on a sac-bunt by Sara Riou, but that kept Keepers at third base. The inning ended when Keepers was eliminated at the plate trying to score on a wild pitch.

Lizzie Clarijs pitched the final two innings for Terrasvogels and did very well. She walked a batter with one out in the sixth, but then struckout the next two batters. She retired the side in the seventh to seal the win and earn a save.
