DSS records first wins of season
Nederlands

HAARLEM (Neth.) - DSS has won its first games of the season. On Sunday (April 28), the Haarlem-team ended a 6-game losing streak since the start of the season by winning its double-header against Hoofddorp Pioniers.

However, it initially appeared that DSS was en route to its seventh consecutive loss, as the team trailed 7-2 halfway the fifth inning in the first game. DSS then rallied for ten runs to turn the game around and win 13-9.

In the second game, DSS won convincingly with an 8-0 score and then ended the match-up in 4½ inning via the mercy-rule.

This weekend, all double-headers were scheduled for Sunday instead of Saturday. In all softball- and baseball-leagues, no games were scheduled on Saturday, which was King's Day. This was done to give everyone the opportunity to enjoy and participate in activities or attends festivals to celebrate the birthday of King Willem-Alexander. In several previous seasons, games were scheduled on King's Day (April 27) and in the past Queen's Day (April 30). But not this year.

Schedule, Standings & Scores

Game 1

Hoofddorp Pioniers got into scoring position in the top of the first inning, but stranded a runner on second base.

Shortly thereafter, DSS opened the score with two runs in its first at bat off of starter Iris Strookman. Jenny Kinburn and Annemiek de Rover began with a walk and advanced on a wild pitch. They went on to score on a sacrifice fly by Sophie Bugter and a single by Eva Rendlová.

For DSS, the scoring stopped here for the moment, while Pioniers rallied in the third inning. The team appeared to have a comfortable lead in the fifth inning, but then DSS turned the game around with a 10-run rally.

In the bottom of the second inning, DSS had runners on second and third base with one out, but both were eliminated in a double play. Denice van Dijk led off and was hit by a pitch, then advanced to third base on an one-out infield-hit by Anna-Bè Bartels, who ended up on second base on a throwing error. Next batter Jenny Kinburn grounded to pitcher Iris Strookman, which resulted in the elimination of Van Dijk at third base. Bartels moved to third base, but then also was eliminated to complete a double play.

Pioniers then rallied for six runs in the top of the third inning on four basehits. The bases got loaded when Rose Mwaro led off with a walk, Femke Nuijten followed with a bunt-single and Quilen Dirksz reached on an error. The first was forced out at the plate on a grounder by Nina Oomes, but then a run was scored when Kelsey Huijzers walked. Shari van Heyningen followed with a 2-run double to put Pioniers ahead, 3-2. With two outs, Iris Dweelaard brought in two runs with a sigle and went on to score herself on a single by Dionne Cooper.

After DSS had left a runner behind on second base in the bottom of the third, Pioniers added a run in the fourth. With one out, Quilen Dirksz hit a triple and scored on a sacrifice fly by Nina Oomes.

But in the bottom of the fifth inning, the game suddenly turned around. DSS scored ten runs on six basehits and took a 12-7 lead. A 10-run inning is not unfamiliar to DSS, as it was involved in the lone game last season when the same happened. However, back then, it was opponent Tex Town Tigers that scored ten runs in one inning against DSS in game on May 26.

Jenny Kinburn led off with a single, then an error was made on a force play-grounder by Annemiek de Rover. The two moved on a wild pitch, then scored on a triple by Sophie Bugter. A pitching change followed, as Sheila van der Tang took over. She saw Bugter score on a grounder by Eva Rendlová. Hereafter, the bases got loaded when Dominique Burger singled and Kim Scholtes and Denice van Dijk both walked. Two runs were then added on a single by Lorraine Kieft, which tied the score at 7-7. The bases were loaded again when Anna-Bè Bartels reached on a bunt-single. Moments later, DSS took the lead on a fielder's choice-grounder by Jenny Kinburn. A walk for Annemiek de Rover brought in the next run. Iris Strookman then re-entered as pitcher, but she also walked Sophie Bugter (who batted in four runs), which led to the eighth run in the inning. With the bases still loaded, Eva Rendlová flied out, but then Dominique Burger delivered a 2-run single to make it a 12-7 score. Burger had two basehits in this inning. With runners on first and second base, Kim Scholtes re-entered as pinch-hitter for Elise Ooms, who had pinch-ran for her earlier in the inning. Scholtes was the 15th batter and ended the long at bat with a flyout.

DSS scored another run in the sixth inning. With two outs, Anna-Bè Bartels doubled. Kelsey Huijzers then became the new pitcher for Pioniers, but she gave up a runscoring single to Jenny Kinburn.

Now trailing 13-7, Pioniers managed to score two more runs in the top of the seventh. With one out, Shari van Heyningen singled and scored on a triple by Mayara Brown. She then scored on a grounder by Iris Dweelaard. Next batter Dionne Cooper reached on an error, but the game then ended when pitcher María Gómez Mendoza, who went the distance for DSS, caught a line drive hit by Rose Mwaro.

Jenny Kinburn followed with an RBI-double, which also led to a pitching change. Iris Strookman took over, but she was greeted with a runscoring single by Annemiek de Rover. That brought Kinburn to third base and she scored on a sacrifice fly by Sophie Bugter, which lifted the lead to 8-0. In this game, Bugter batted in five runs. She batted in four in the opening game. Kinburn scored three runs in both the first and second game. In today's double-header, she batted 4-for-7.

In the top of the fifth, María Gómez Mendoza walked Rose Mwaro with two outs, but then closed the game with a strikeout.
