Sparks opens Series with win
Nederlands
SANTPOORT (Neth.) - Reigning champion New York Pizza Sparks Haarlem opened the best-of-five Holland Series Friday-evening with a 5-4 victory vs. A4 Terrasvogels. The win came after two tie-breaks in the ninth inning and ended in heavy rain. Game Two will be played on Saturday in Haarlem.

Terrasvogels outhit Sparks 10-6, but also committed three errors, leading to three unearned runs. The first error was made right on the first play of the game. In the first inning, pitcher Maaike Zijlstra made a throwing error on a grounder by lead-off hitter Kim Kluijskens, who was able to reach second base. She then stole third and scored on a 2-out double by Jolanda Kroesen.

In the second inning, Terrasvogels scored twice. Sandra Gouverneur and Nina van Huissteden led off with singled, then the bases were loaded when a force play-grounder by Marissa Wienholds didn't result in a putout. Next, Nathalie Gosewehr singled in two runs to give Terrasvogels a 2-1 lead.
The lead was shortlived however, as Sparks came alongside in the third inning when Kim Kluijskens singled with one out and scored on a 2-out single by Marloes Fellinger, which was to be Sparks' only earned run.
Pitchers Rebecca Soumeru (Sparks) and Maaike Zijlstra (Terrasvogels) then didn't gave away much in the next four innings, which remained scoreless to force extra innings.

In the eighth inning, Sparks took a 4-2 lead. Tie-break pinch-runner Maaike Blauwgeers moved on a sac-bunt, then scored on a double by Lynn Geertman. With two outs, powerhitter Jolanda Kroesen was walked intentionally, but then a throwing error was made on a force play-grounder by Mariska Greve to bring in another run.

Terrasvogels recovered and tied the score in the home eighth. Tie-break runner Dana Horeman stole third base and scored when Sandra Gouverneur singled. After a fielder's choice and a sac-bunt, Terrasvogels had runners on second and third with two outs when Nathalie Gosewehr (who went 3-for-3 with 3 RBI's) singled in the tying run, but a strikeout ended the inning.

Sparks again scored in the next tie-break. Runner Noémi Boekel advanced on a sac-bunt, then scored when an error was made on a grounder by Dana Wassenaar, before a double play ended the inning.
But this time, Terrasvogels was unable to come back again, leaving two runners behind.

Sparks Haarlem clinched the final with a 3-0 sweep vs. Twins in the Play-Offs last weekend.
Terrasvogels reached the final also with a 3-0 sweep, defeating Van der Peijl DSC '74.
