NOORDWIJK (Neth.) - Former baseball-umpire and KNBSB-boardmember Dick van der Klaauw has passed away on Friday, June 10 at the age of 80 years old. The memorial and funeral ceremony for Mr. Van der Klaauw will take place on Wednesday, June 15 at Noordwijk. The memorial will start at 1:00 PM in Grand Hotel Huis ter Duin, Koningin Astrid Boulevard 5. Afterwards, from 3:30 PM on, there is an opportunity to offer condolences to the family at the same location.

Dick van der Klaauw was a baseball-umpire from 1959 through 1976, including more than 10 in the Dutch big league. In 1964, he became a member of the Umpire Committee of the Amsterdam Region and served as its secretary from 1964-1967, before becoming the committee's chairman, a post he held until 1973.

As an international umpire, Dick van der Klaauw participated in four Haarlem Baseball Weeks, officiating games during the tournaments of 1968, 1969, 1971 and 1972. Last year, Van der Klaauw attended a meeting of former National Team-players and international umpires, who participated in the Haarlem Baseball Week over the years, as the tournament celebrated its 25th edition.

On March 1, 1975, Dick van der Klaauw was elected member of the board of the Royal Dutch Baseball and Softball Association (KNBSB). As boardmember, he was responsible for the umpires as well as the game rules. He served a 3-year term and was not up for re-election during the council meeting on February 25, 1978.

In the years hereafter, Dick van der Klaauw was active for a lot of years in soccer, became a wellknown personality in Amsterdam's amateur soccer-scene and was especially active for Amsterdam-based AFC, where he meant he lot for the club. From 1981-1986, Van der Klaauw was AFC's chairman of its youth committee. He then was a member of the board for AFC from 1986-2003, first as its treasurer (six years), then vice-chairman (one year) and then as chairman from 1995-2003. When he retired as chairman in 2003, AFC named Dick van der Klaauw an Honorary Member of the club.
